Will MNHQ consider installing a 'Hide Poster' function?

This has been raised a couple of times, just wondering if MNHQ had any plans to make this an option.

Would be nice to hide the couple of Mners who genuinely get me riled up.

I really dont like the idea. it would be like Narnia-gate all over again.

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2012 21:24

Oooh, yeah, we could call it the "Sending to Coventry Button" like back at school, but for grown ups on the internet.

Some people would end up Billy no-mates.

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2012 21:25

Most people I don't like don't last long here anyway. That gives me some sick satisfaction.

It doesn't matter what the hidden people have posted imo, loads of people repeat what other people have said etc. I don't think it would make any difference to how other people view threads.

OP posts:
LoremIpsum · 02/01/2012 21:34

What's the difference, Mutt? If you ignore them then you'll just respond to other posters, if there's an ignore button you'll just respond to other posters.

Then you would choose not to use it. It's a feature on other forums I visit. I don't use it, but others do and IME it enhances their experience without affecting mine. I just don't see the problem.

I agree with mutt. and that aside, it would cause so much conflict and encourage even more trolling and bitchery.

Tee2072 · 02/01/2012 21:57

It does none of the above. You are all speaking from fear, not experience.

You know what? It'll never happen anyway. This is the same conversation we have every time it comes up. And MNHQ agrees with those who think it will make things disjointed.

Too bad. It's a great feature on many boards.

LoremIpsum · 02/01/2012 21:57

You're assuming it would affect you, maybe it would. I find that it doesn't and is a fairly normal function elsewhere.

Lissielou, again, my experience has been the opposite of what you're suggesting. It seems to defuse conflict and make trolling and derailing harder.

i can't see how it will make things disjointed - how? Threads work perfectly well with a few deletions.

It would hopefully reduce the bitchery - if you can't see someone's inane posts, you are less likely to react to them and get in an argument.

And I disputed that your reasoning would not make threads disjointed in the way that you say.

Am on the fence with this one. I used to be all in favour but I've recently read a few genuinely kind, witty and insightful posts from someone who I'd written off as being a complete noodle.

LoremIpsum · 02/01/2012 22:11

Mutt, threads aren't linear though. People crosspost, ignore lots of posts and posters, disregard some information and hone in on other bits, post without reading the whoever thread or even the OP. You're already reading posts that aren't informed by every other post.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2012 22:12

It hasn't been raise a "couple" of times. It has been raised more than that ans, IIRC, every single time MNHQ say they have no plans to do it.

OracleInaCoracle · 02/01/2012 22:12

I have to say, a while ago I was coming round to the "hide poster" idea some posters made my teeth itch and every post they made had me frothing incoherently. then I hid AIBU, and all was peaceful again

SoupDragon · 02/01/2012 22:14

"Threads work perfectly well with a few deletions."

But they don't really. There is often a flurry of "You can't say that!" type posts followed by "What was so bad it ended deleting?" by people who missed it. I read a thread today which made little sense where there had been a few deletions because it was unclear what was deleted and why and who was agreeing with who IYSWIM.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:14

Well then, it won't harm them to answer it again. I have not seen more than a couple of request, but of course I cannot claim to have seen every request in the history of mumsnet.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 02/01/2012 22:15

No it won't harm them but it must be very tedious.
