northern i have spoken to the op a few times on this thread, thinking of it, i don't really recognise you as a poster

AwayinaKayzr · 21/12/2011 21:40

Mistletoe is dying out and there won't be any soon, some bloke on the tv said so the other day.

WinterWonderlandIsComing · 21/12/2011 21:43

I moderate another forum and there is a thread-lock facility. If Jj's very emotively-titled support thread wasn't in Chat (which will disappear in any case after the warm-fuzzy festive season) then perhaps the lock function could be deployed in order to keep the helpful comments, (including mine I might add) provide a record of sorts, but preventing it from dragging on and getting derailed and then deleted at OP's request that HQ delete personal attacks and troll-hunting as per their own policy.

It might stop such a misunderstanding happening again if things could stand and be seen.

Mind you someone called me a cunt on the forum Wiki entry for locking a thread once Grin

Grin over30s - I've been here for four years with this name so I'm afraid you'll have to rein in your imagination.

Akiram · 21/12/2011 21:46

Winter I think thread locking has been suggested before - as far as I know MNHQ have never said why they would/wouldn't do it. I think it is a good idea, as long as it isn't just used whenever the OP decides s/he has heard enough.

JJ · 21/12/2011 21:47

Just would like to post again on this (as yet undeleted) thread that the "JJ" in question is not, in fact, me - it is Jjandthebean or something like that - a username with Jj in it, at any rate.

I'm fine, don't need any money, having a nice Christmas although ate a bit too much cake tonight and would rather not be involved, in reality or simply in someone's imagination.

scottishmummy · 21/12/2011 21:48

what's the benefits of thread lock?

champagnesupernova · 21/12/2011 21:53

Hello JJ

I knew it wasn't you. Glad to hear you are having a lovely Christmas. Xmas Grin

Akiram · 21/12/2011 21:54

SM well in the thread that was deleted last night it could have been locked so that no one else could pile in but it would be there for people to read so that you don't get the half truths that are floating around.
I don't know in all honesty, I saw it mentioned on a reverse AIBU and it seemed like a good idea in that situation. I do think better a thread stands, albeit locked, rather than deleted, if it had to be one or the other.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 21/12/2011 21:55

I suppose the benefit of locking threads is that once hysteria sets in, it can be halted without deletions.

But given human nature, I think that just having a 1000 post limit allows things to blow themselves out with tedium, and hopefully stops umpteen spin-off threads. But that only works if MNHQ don't delete the original.
