has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

It's vile, it's intrusive and it fawns over Facebook in a deeply distateful manner. I truly thought MN had more dignity.

Oh, and saying "you don't have to use it" is disingenuous in the extreme. I know I don't have to use it but my decision to treat this new addition with contempt still doesn't stop my MN ramblings posts being spread like cheap margarine all over the nest of vipers that is FB.

FaverollesWithBoughsOfHolly · 15/12/2011 17:13

This is a horrible idea Angry
One of the things I love about MN is that it's sane (in an insane kind of way) If I wanted something like this, I'd already be at NM.

By parents for parents.
So given the long ongoing thread about like buttons, why the decision for this?
And everything CaroleCervix and anyone else said about anonymity.

TheOriginalFAB · 15/12/2011 17:14

What a really bad idea and not one I will be using at all.

Why would you want connecting with FB?

coppertop · 15/12/2011 17:14

It's horrible.

Have a "Like" button if you absolutely must, but please get rid of the FB link.

FruStefanLindman · 15/12/2011 17:15

I don't 'do' FB.
I don't need a 'Like' button on here.

sassyTHEFIRST · 15/12/2011 17:16

Question: Is this about money HQ? Are you paid by FB/their advertisers for each linkage? IF not (even IF) can we get rid please?

FellatioNelson · 15/12/2011 17:17

But if any of my friends who are MN/FB crossovers 'like' a thread that I am on, can it be seen by my non MN FB friends (are you keeping up? Grin)

Because if they read the thread and think 'my my, that Fellatio person is full of insightful wit and genius and I feel compelled to click on her profile' then I'm outed. Aren't I?

Can my non MN FB friends see things linked by my MN/FB friends? Confused I don't even know. But I'm a bit scared now.

fellatio you don't need a like button to do this. You can just post a link to the thread. the button just makes it easier to do so.

and yes they can see it. these threads are all searchable on google and are public afaik

Flisspaps · 15/12/2011 17:21

I don't mind a like button in the form of 'the following users like this post...' message you get on MSE, but not a link to Facebook - just why?!

HappyCamel · 15/12/2011 17:22

Nooooo! The whole point of MN Is that it's anonymous and separate from normal life. A safe place to rant chat.

SantasStrapon · 15/12/2011 17:23

I like it. Tis totally different from a 'like' a post button.

SnapesMistressofMerriment · 15/12/2011 17:23

Dislike

usualsuspect · 15/12/2011 17:23

Can you merge all the threads about this MNHQ ?

Because MN is going to be full of these threads all night

MoreBeta · 15/12/2011 17:23

Can we have a 'hate' button too to balance it up?

There is a Yin and a Yang to everything in life.

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 15/12/2011 17:23

@sassyTHEFIRST

No, we're not paid for each link. Absolutely not.

wannaBe · 15/12/2011 17:23

I don't like it. get rid.

CarolCervix · 15/12/2011 17:24

I know there was the linky thingy before - but it was smaller and not so in your face as this one.

I also know I don't have to click it - I am worried about other people clicking it,

I DO NOT WANT REAL LIFE AND MN LIFE MIXING.

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 15/12/2011 17:24

The pop up box does appear, but it doesn't matter if you click away from it or confirm - it still puts a link on your wall. Please fix :)

ta.

LoopyLoopsWoopDeWoops · 15/12/2011 17:24

I am actually quite in favour of an 'agree' button next to individual posts, but this link with FB, which already has the capacity to personally target you for ads and automatically detect and tag pictures, is a step too far. In fact, it is creepy. Please rethink, MNHQ.

AgathaCrusty · 15/12/2011 17:24

Also, saying that the button is only present for non-sensitive topics doesn't really work.

I have frequently seen people posting sensitive stuff in AIBU because they didn't know where else to post it, or in 'chat' because they know it will disappear in 30 days. Well, it won't frigging disappear now, will it?

CarolCervix · 15/12/2011 17:24

ANd is it there for old posts. Ones in which I have ranted about work or family which I DO NOT want posted on FB?

OP posts:
WeThreeKingsOfMardyBra · 15/12/2011 17:25

I DON'T LIKE it either. I like to keep MN and RL separate.

Sassy I suspect this is about money - it's about creating extra traffic to MN so that more expensive advertising can be sold. And, of course, MN is a business and isn't just here to keep us all amused. Some revenue needs to be generated to make sure MNHQ have a good supply of posh biscuits. However there is already a MN Facebook page for those who want to link the two together. And MN regularly tweets interesting new threads in order to generate traffic. This is a step too far IMO.

AliBellandthe40jingles · 15/12/2011 17:25

Oh please get rid of it! I really don't like Facebook, it is a pile of childish shite and I do NOT want what I post on here to be all over it.

MN is supposed to be safe, separate, secret.

This is going to make me very wary about what I post in future.
