has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

OP posts:

I don't like it. Can I ask something?

I don't have a Facebook account as TuftyFinch. I am anonymous. But. My Mumsnet and RL Facebook use the same email. If I 'like' something on Mumsnet as Tuftyfinch does it put it on my RL Facebook. Thus outing me?

There are many threads in parenting, behaviour/development, teenagers, breastfeeding, aibu, chat etc. etc. etc. that I'm sure the OP finds sensitive and wouldn't want to potentially have slapped across FB?

but it's already slapped across the internet? Mumsnetters are not your real life friends.. they are people on the internet.

@LauraIngallsWilder

Semper - good idea but what makes you think they will listen - we disliked the like posts idea a few weeks ago and now they have gone ahead anyway :(

and see fit to crack jokes at those of us who hate it....

I'm off to to name change :(

Laura, my apologies for being flippant to you. It wasn't meant the way you read it but I shouldn't have posted that and I am Blush

I'm sorry for another dissertation about this option, but here's a further comment about the inappropriateness of a direct link to Facebook from MN.

Facebook was created as a means of people keeping in touch with real life friends and family - a "Facebook" being what they call a college yearbook in the USA. For that reason, real names are used otherwise the site wouldn't work. Even though Facebook has increasingly developed into a force for negativity, xenophobia and general unpleasantness, the principle remains the same so far as one's identity is concerned. You post as yourself, under your name.

Mumsnet is a forum where anonymity by means of a username is at the very heart of its functionality. Hence people being able to "namechange" if they post a particularly sensitive topic that they fear might out them in real life.

Providing a facility that readily shares debates between these two sites is wildly inappropriate and I am astonished that you cannot recognise this as MN Towers.

Afraid I have to go home and shout at my children to conjure up some domestic bliss, so please don't think we've just cut and run out on you all.

RebeccaMumsnet will be around later on to field the outcry try to answer your questions.

And thanks for all your feedback so far. We are listening and we will take all you say on board.

I like the Mumsnet FB page but would very much like to keep my mumsnet persona VERY VERY seperate, I'd be most upset if a thread I'd posted popped up on facebook.

See, I'm not worried about people necessarily linking my username to my real name. It's more that I suppose for most users MN is somewhere private and even to have a link on one's facebook page kind of does reveal to the world that you are a user, which will I think lead to some snooping. It's the potential for that accidental click that worries me most. ANd it's not just on here, newspaper sites that do this wind me up as well. Noone needs to know what I'm reading.

Facebook is bloody everywhere and I bloody hate it.

My account is on permanent deactivation, as I have some distant friends I don't want to offend but still - I think i'll delete it in its entirety now.

MN isn't facebook and should not be affiliated to it in any which way.

The thing is, it only takes the odd turn of phrase or interesting detail to "out" someone. I do namechange if I am posting anything which I think could identify me. But there are always certain generalities which I'm sure people could piece together to use as confirmation if they did have a theory about who I am.

I think a lot of us like to remain anonymous for professional reasons. And it would be very embarrassing if, say, a certain MNer who works with members of the public were outed and then all her clients would know that she once shat herself in Tesco's (iirc).

I also want to know what Tufty asked.....I like the fact that nobody on MN knows me and I keep my FB seperate...for real life people that are my mates...If I post something here and someone likes it...will it come up on my FB page? I can easily avoid the like button myself..but what if someone likes a post I make???

I dont like FB and MN being linked. It's all directly to benefit MN. Nobody else. I don't think I will stick around on MN now...not that I'll be a big loss...I've been here a year now under various names but I always avoid sites linked to FB.

No, if someone likes a thread, it comes up on their Facebook page.

And the 'like' refers to the thread in its entirety, not anyone's post within it.

(Sorry, really am off now)
