has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

yes Pandemoniaa i am listening, and am also open to debate honestly. But as a FB user who has linked to very many funny threads in the past I really don't see the issue. I can't honestly see many people clicking to like a sensitive thread...it tends to be amusing ones.
It just seems that some of our members seem to think that what they have written is indeed private within the walls of this site, which isn't true.

I agree with Showy

but even if you 'like' it, it doesn't out you, do it?

all it says is 'i read this' surely?

MNHQ should try to remember that it is the users of MN who make this site what it is. If you alienate your users, what are you left with?

OK MNHQ. You currently have 12,378 people who like the MN Facebook page - i.e. people who are happy to link their MN and RL persona. I don't know what the stats are for usage - but surely that's enough for you. The rest of us want to keep it separate.

I really really don't like it. Really.

It seems like the kind of thing that could easily be clicked by accident. My fb friends don't know I mumsnet and I absolutely don't want them to know (for a few reasons). I don't see why MN has to be linked to facebook. Why is it meant to be a benefit?

OK, so if sensitive topics are excluded, surely that means most of the topics?
There are many threads in parenting, behaviour/development, teenagers, breastfeeding, aibu, chat etc. etc. etc. that I'm sure the OP finds sensitive and wouldn't want to potentially have slapped across FB?
Have you seriously thought this through? Hmm

supa I agree that it's not a private site. But why make it more transparent when so many users post private and personal stuff on here.

If we all have to watch our tongues on MN, there wouldn't be as many interesting threads about bumsex and the nature of the site would be eroded. Heaven forbid, it might become like Netmums, where there isn't much anonymity and consequently the discussion is generally banal.

What Cankulzof said. Could someone please explain what circumstances would ever prompt anyone to 'like' a thread? Why would you want to even post a link to a funny thread? Its madness.

And the whole 'like' moniker is deceiving. It actually just means 'link'.

Cervix, 1 of those likes was me to see if you got a Pop up option, which I did not. And I deleted it immediately, so discount it.

FB is taking over the world. It's very tiring.

Mardy - I've liked the MN Facebook page, but as long as I don't comment or like a link, it's kept private.
This wouldn't.

It doesn't link your posting name to your fb though does it? Just a link to the thread, so how would anyone know who you are on MN through that? Confused

Report
santastooearlymustdache · 15/12/2011 17:43

i 'like' all sorts of things on my fb page, no-one hunts me down for reading a page of the Daily Mash or liking marmite...

i really don't see what the problem is. if it's too near to your own RL, don't click the 'like' button

Anything we post on mumsnet could be in the DM tomorrow or on a certain not to be named talk show hosts hideous morning program. You are only anonymous if no one figures out who you are.The anger seems to be directed at mumsnet bringing it's website to a larger audience. Why wouldn't they?

WeThreeKingsOfMardyBra · 15/12/2011 17:44

Good point Faverolles. I haven't even liked the MN Facebook page. MN is my dirty little secret apart from when DH blurts it out to friends.
