I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

OP posts:
prettybird · 31/08/2010 11:22

Still don't see where Mooos 40:60 split comes from!

Looking at the thread in Chat, the consumers are unanimous in not wanting change, except, perhaps for some enhanced search facilities.

JustineMumsnet · 31/08/2010 11:23

Hello all,

No we didn't put someone up to this thread. I'm shocked at the suggestion - do you think we want to make work for ourselves Grin?

Here's what's in our current thoughts for Talk.

  1. Quote facility for webchat threads - so webchatee can answer each question without having to say Dear so-and-so.
  2. Bookmark facility (though that's been on the agenda for some time and is proving tricky - 'tis all to do with pagination I'm told)
  3. Catsbum/sucking lemons emoticon
  4. Highlight OP's post (opt-in on customise)

Also think standard formatting feature sounds useful (eg bold, highlight, italic) and we'll talk to Techs about that if you agree?

You have my word that if anyone at MNHQ tries to introduce Avatars, I'll lock em in the broom cupboard and throw away the key. Grin

ps Said - you are so right about New v Classic Wink.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 11:24

Actually, the one thing I would really like is a search box to search "all posts by me". Quite often I'm looking for a post I made or a thread I know I was on but I can't remember what name I was using at the time.

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/08/2010 11:31

Whilst you are at it, please can you enable the MN Sober Workplace to remove all the emoticons.

Is not good when you are MN at work when you are on a chat thread and there are smileys all over the place. Makes it look obvous that you are skiving.

But LEAVE THE REST ALONE FGS AND DON'T DO TICKERS

JustineMumsnet · 31/08/2010 11:33

ProfessorLayton - hmm will ask about how easy/complicated
Getorf - likewise

prettybird · 31/08/2010 11:47

Actually Justine - if you look more closely at the thread, you'll see that the majority don't want a quote facility!

It gets in the way of the words (you know how we like to talk! Grin) as people abuse it with "quotes" within "quotes" and the message gets lost.

Never crossed my mind that Mumsnet might have put anyone up to this Wink

JustineMumsnet · 31/08/2010 11:49

Quote facility is only planned on webchats - think they will work much more efficiently with that in place.

prettybird · 31/08/2010 12:03

True - I hadn't read your post properly, so hadn't registered that you had said it was being considered for Webchats. Blush

Mooos · 31/08/2010 15:05

What on earth is a ticker ??

I realise a lot of you think things are happy with things as they are however for just as many of you that are there are (probably) the same amount who find this forum a bit outdated. I was introduced here by a couple of friends years ago who have long since left as they found it too cumbersome. Just saying!

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 31/08/2010 15:08

OOOOH! (re potential removal of emoticons on sober workplace.

I will never do any work again. Grin and

MuckyDucky · 31/08/2010 15:12

Mooos - if you dont like it your choice. we are all free to make choices. You are entirely welcome to chose to go else where if you dont like this. Or you are entirely welcome to stay and live with it. again your choice.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 31/08/2010 15:30

And there are plenty of other forums for people who don't like the MN look and feel, fortunately. Many of us have gravitated here from them precisely because we find it less cumbersome and distracting and would leave again if it started adding bells and whistles. Others like bells and whistles, and that's fine because there are other places they can get them.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 31/08/2010 16:39

I have one!

Why can't I squidge MN up to half a screen (if, say, I need to run a Peppa Pig video on the other half Hmm) and have the text wrap around, instead of having to scroll back and forth to read each line?
If it's just my own incompetence, then please someone let me know, FGS!

Oh, and on another forum I use, there is the facility to start a voting thread, with a yes/no choice in the OP and the thread running as normal under it. Would speed up AIBU no end! Wink

FlutterbyPurpleToffee · 31/08/2010 17:05

When i joined MN (back in the days when the fields were full of lavenderrWink) it was hard work compared to other places i "went to" at the time. Now i come here kick off my shoes and stick my feet up. I LOVE it's simplicity. I love that my page isn't taken up by someone quoting every part of something i could have read further up(or down) the thread. I love that i can keep MN as it was when i joined but with a few tweaks (I am MN old school but hide threads/topics and until this week i still had OPs at the BOTTOM of the page!)

I don't want the ability to have a ticker - i like that all the "huns" have to go elsewhere for their sparkly shit.

I sure as hell don't want to be notified when i get a reply - i am not sure my email could cope with that volume of mail Wink

I like that i can say fuck here and it not automatically change to fluff.

Am under a temp name change because of a keylog so i am aware you don't know who the fluff i am

prettybird · 31/08/2010 17:08

Actually, TheHeathenof Suburbia, Mumsnet used to be able to wrap text if you used a smaller screen.

That facility was lost during one of the upgrades :( Hmm

No wonder we are suspicious Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/08/2010 17:08

I don't think there is another forum in the world where a thread entitled CUNTING SAINSBURYS would be allowed to stand.

CakeandRoses · 31/08/2010 20:53

Nooo to tickers and other sparkly crapola

yy to:

cats bum mouth and boak smiley

timed edit (e.g. with 5 mins of post so you can correct annoying mistakes)

Indication of the OP against each of their posts - bold or just (OP) would do it

Bookmarking/watching threads

CakeandRoses · 31/08/2010 20:57

also would be good to subtly indicate who has a profile - or am i missing something?

southeastastra · 31/08/2010 21:07

yes the big underline under your name Grin

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 21:08

cakeandroses - I don't know which version of MN you're using but on classic if you have a profile your name is a clickable dark blue link, underlined.

If you don't have a profile your name is a slightly more faded blue without an underline.

Not sure how it stacks up on other versions, but you can tell.

theyoungvisiter · 31/08/2010 21:08

dagnammit - SEA got there before me grrrr Grin

  1. I really don't want to see how many people have read the post

  2. I really don't want to see who is currently reading the post

  3. I would vaguely like to be able to get to my first unread post, but am not hugely fussed about it. It's more useful on a slower-moving forum, TBH.

  4. I like that MN doesn't allow editing

  5. Every forum I'm on that has a quote button winds up with posters quoting great swathes of stuff at each other. I like that on MN if you want to quote something you have to look it up and make a conscious decision what you are going to cut and paste.

I absolutely agree with previous posters who have said that the lack of availability of bells and whistles on Mumsnet makes it about the words. That's one of the things that's refreshing about it.

And assuming for the moment that you are genuinely unaware of what posters are on about, housepricecrash has regular "Hey, let's all go and wind up Mumsnet, it's so funny!" threads.

Aren't we the consumers here? If someone's suddenly given me a shareholding interest in Mumsnet, and/or an income stream from it, I wish they'd told me. Apart from anything else I could have put in valuable time working on my snotty attitude to the rest of you plebs consumers .

btw I thought quoting was really bad before that too.
