I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

Love that there is no edit button. Yes, I feel stupid when I see my typos, but there have been some classic mistakes that are even better than the original thread..

recent "lick his bollocks" instead of "kick his bollocks" was so funny.

Hey just goes to prove we're all human.

prettybird · 30/08/2010 15:48

I don't calculate it as 60:40 either - unless you count the ones that say that the ability to bookmark would ne nice (but not a necessity) and certainly no-one very few who think that we need to be able to reply to particular people and that it is messy.

In fact, the most consistent message is that we like the tidiness of the discussion board's simplicity. :)

As far as I can make out, 34 people like it just as it is, 9 people would like some minor changes (eg the ability to edit or to bookmark) and 2, maybe 3 people are dissatisfied.

Hardly a 60:40 split Hmm

I've tried not to double count people who've posted more than once, so the numbers might be one or two out.

nannynick · 30/08/2010 16:23

Change isn't easy... the technical systems running this site may need to be changed a lot to implement some of the things wanted by Moos

  1. I like the fact that I can see how many people have read the post That takes a fair bit of computing power... it has to calculate stats for each and every post. On a busy site that extra work takes additional processor time which could be spent better on providing a faster response to users.

Why do you need to know how many people have read your post? If it says NONE for a long time, it will just make you Sad How will the system determine a real user, from a non-real user... would you expect it only to count people logged in... or would you want it to count those who are not logged in (which thus could include robots).

  1. I like to see who is currently reading the post Hmm Imagine how many usernames may need to be displayed if say 2679 people are reading a particular message thread. Again consider processing time... it takes time to collate and present that data. I think you are possibly forgetting how busy this site is... not sure if Tech has published the stats. Mumsnet as a whole, according to Comsscore gets over 1/2 million visitors per month.
  1. I can always get to my first unread post - so saves trawling through pages Things move very fast on here at times. Do you really want a system which tells you which posts you have and have not read?
  1. Editing is allowed Now that would sometimes be useful. However if it is done after someone else posts, then not so good.
  1. Quoting is great Cut and Paste work well Grin
fryalot · 30/08/2010 16:28

I like it. I've liked it for years and, even though I disappear occasionally I always come back.

I do sometimes wonder though, if people don't like it, why they stick around Biscuit

nannynick · 30/08/2010 16:30

Stats from 2007
monthly page views - currently 9 million
monthly unique visitors - currently 750,000
Source: JustineMumsnet 14-May-2007

So just imagine how much that has increased over the years... wonder what the current stats are.

oh for heaven's sake, this topic isn't due for a revival until Oct 23rd. Does no one read the time table?

Bumperlicious · 30/08/2010 17:33

Nope, I like it the way it is :)

MmeBlueberry · 30/08/2010 19:00

My hubby works for a FMCG company. I'm glad they don't have the same attitudes to consumers as most people here do. Rule no. 1 is not to tell someone that their opinions are worthless.

Rule no. 2 is to be wary of self-selecting groups.

prettybird · 30/08/2010 19:06

Excuse me, aren't we the consumers???? Hmm

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 19:11

What's FMCG?

And isn't an internet forum self-selecting by definition?

MmeBlueberry · 30/08/2010 19:15

*What's FMCG?

Just Google it.

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 19:17

Well, I could, but in general people tend to answer questions on here quite politely, I've found. So your attitude to this consumer is rather disappointing.

MmeBlueberry · 30/08/2010 19:24

That's effortful bulletin boards for you Grin

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 19:24

That's a nasty adjective. Blee.

whomovedmychocolate · 30/08/2010 19:27

Gosh how rude some of you are being Sad

(Fast moving consumer goods Habbibu - don't fret dear I think she's channelling Tesco Wink)

I like MN the way it is, yes it is clunky and does not pander to the ego in the way some sites do but I can live with that. :)

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 19:31

No, it's not. It's directly below your post, the thread was quiet, and you and I had been having a conversation. I'm a grown-up, with reading and comprehension skills and all that. I can cope. As, despite your devil's advocacy, can you.

Besides, my skills in c&P are also well developed - et voila:

"

whomovedmychocolate · 30/08/2010 19:34

Depends where you shop Wink

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 19:36

I googled it. My eyes hurt. I want to scrub my brain free of mgt-spk.

CakeandRoses · 30/08/2010 19:56

TSC Grin Hope you road-tested this request by uploading your newborn photo for a Netmum's fisting thread as promised?

Also, you and my baby DD have some kind a spiritual connection - whenever you post, she farts.

UnquietDad · 30/08/2010 20:03

Quoting makes Fisking easier, which can be unhelpful.

If someone has built an argument out of the cumulative effect of several points, it is unconstructive to then take each point and respond to it. It would mean that some of the demented fraeks [sic] who have nothing better to do than go through everyone else's argument point by laborious point and "refute" it (that's in the Monty Python sense of "that's not an argument, it's just contradiction") would love it, but it would get on everybody else's tits/moobs.

That's my experience from other places.

CakeandRoses · 30/08/2010 20:12

hah - I thought you'd done a typo of fisting there!
