I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

OP posts:

But then how would the pedants pass the time? :o

nickytwotimes · 30/08/2010 09:47

I like it.

ANother mn classic user here

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 30/08/2010 09:47

but what if its just a certain line that you want to quote. its just as easy to C&P.

i like the fact that we arent spoonfed. and agree with ethelina, the way you posted the thread was aggressive

Actually, it is not "just as easy". It's not hard, and it's certainly not pretty. But a single click and a little bit of deleting the PP's post is much easier (and prettier).

Even if we had an ability to indent text before C&Ping so that it is clear that the quote is separate would be helpful.

usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 09:54

Yes I agree that sometimes its difficult to see whats been quoted ..and its a pain to use the italics feature around every word ..

DinahRod · 30/08/2010 09:58

I have classic MN and all the thread is on one page. It's bootiful Smile

Cannot be bothered with other sites that shan't be named where discussions each have their own section, it's just unwieldy and time-consuming to navigate.

The simplicity and ease of use is why MN is so popular and, imo, so influential.

And God save us from tickers and swirly shit.

PedlarsSpanner · 30/08/2010 10:02

yy to MN classic and reading first to last on one page

OP you have got folks backs up by wading in with your Hmm face and critiscism

This thread prolly won't end well

RustyBear · 30/08/2010 10:05

"Yes I agree that sometimes its difficult to see whats been quoted ..and its a pain to use the italics feature around every word .."

You don't have to italicise quotes, just use quotation marks. It's what they're for,,,

TigerFeet · 30/08/2010 10:07

MN is not allowed to change ever. Whenever the Tech Shed gets inventive, we all spontaneously combust and active convos is full of "wtf has happened" and "WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH" type threads and nothing else is dicussed for days.

We Do Not Like Change.

TigerFeet · 30/08/2010 10:08

Oh yes, MN classic and first to last posts on one page here too, the way it's always been.

usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 10:09

'ok' Grin I don't quote often anyway Its too much of a faff [lazy]

prettybird · 30/08/2010 10:12

ANother MN classic user here - and a refugee from another site (many many moons ago Grin) where the disucssions were threaded and it was a pain to try follow who was saying what to whom and to get the full view point.

Mumsnet is like a true conversation - everyone's contributions have equal weight. Threads meander like conversations do. If you are in a group chatting, you have to be clear if you are responding to one specific person - but you don't go off and have a private conversation, which is what trying to following different bits of a threaded conversation can feel like.

I like Mumsnet's "cleanness" and simplicity.

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 30/08/2010 10:14

the way i see it, if you hijack another persons thread with a seperate convo (which is how i see threading) you apologise to the op. its rude. if you want to continue the hijack convo, start another thread.

Ineedsomesleep · 30/08/2010 10:16

MN classic for me too. Have seen other forums where the posters have pictures and dates of all their DC's births which count how old they all are.

Give me MN classic everytime.

CakeandRoses · 30/08/2010 10:18

Another fan here of MN uncluttered and straightforward look and the way it is like a proper conversation.

A timed edit would be good tho.

Spacehoppa · 30/08/2010 10:22

I wish I could tell for that matter if anyone reads my blog-unless they leave comments I have no idea if anyone goes there mumsnet/blogs

Contra · 30/08/2010 10:24

Has anyone pointed out the plural of 'forum' yet?

I think the site is alright. It is quite handy to have a quote function, but it does clutter up the page.

prettybird · 30/08/2010 10:30

When I've seen "quote" functions used it can make the threads incredibly long, as people just quote the whole of the post in question - and worse, then quote the post with the quote within it and so on.

Without it, you have to either select the bit that you want (and doing a "copy and paste" and putting quotation marks around it is surely not that difficult Hmm) or paraphrase the bit in question; which means that you have to actaully think about what you are going to comment on.

Contra · 30/08/2010 10:33

Yes, quoting only really works in the earlier stages of a discussion: when I've trawled through techie sites for coding help, I get incredibly confused by the quoting-of-quoting-of quoting.

ethelina · 30/08/2010 10:33

For sure a few more edit functions wouldn't go amiss, and some more smileys, but I really like the simplicity of the threads themselves, i like that they go right across the screen, i like that you can read the whole thing straight down (or up) the page without waiting for pages to load (except on iphone, takes forever but not MN's fault - sort out the app PLEASSE!)

Overall its great.

Contra · 30/08/2010 10:34

And irritated by the automatic sign offs that people have.

Like:

"In Excel we trust"

[icon of Photoshopped formula etc]

?.??.??.?
?.??.??.?
?.??.??.?

I like these ?.??.??.?
I would like change and to be able to see if someone has replied to me and others at the same time - not difficult to set up - but MNers don't like change ?.??.??.?

prettybird · 30/08/2010 10:38

On LinkedIn there is a 15 minute edit function - but the downside is that (as far as I know) your post doesn't actually appear until after that 15 minutes.

And that definitely wouldn't do on Mumsnet Grin

Contra · 30/08/2010 10:38

And as for the downmarket Wink parenting websites with their tickers ... and long descriptions of how many angels (sub categorised into heaven and earth angels, with relevant names, dates and weights) people have managed to produce ... gawd. It's like a trivia vomitorium.

I suppose it's easier to define oneself by that kind of common information, rather than by one's opinions.
