Mumsnet forums need updating

I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

I like the simple forum of this website that I read on a semi regular basis www.housepricecrash.co.uk.

  1. I like the fact that I can see how many people have read the post

  2. I like to see who is currently reading the post

  3. I can always get to my first unread post - so saves trawling through pages

  4. Editing is allowed

  5. Quoting is great

and lots more.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Oh god you see I hate all that shite! [gimmer]

ThatDamnDog · 30/08/2010 11:34

I luuuuuurve MN Classic. It's all just there, just words, and no sparkly things, nothing flashing, no boxes within boxes within boxes, just plain old words.

Some other forums make me feel like I'm on drugs or at least have a blinding headache.

ThatDamnDog · 30/08/2010 11:34

Also Grin @ "power of reading" ... mystical!

BitOfFun · 30/08/2010 11:36

I would hate people to be able to see me reading their posts. It would feel like stalking.

RustyBear · 30/08/2010 11:36

"Nothing changes if nothing changes."

On MN, nothing changes if the majority don't want it to change.

missbeehiving · 30/08/2010 11:39

BoF's quite right. If you stalk, you want to be able to do it discreetly - otherwise what's the point?

prettybird · 30/08/2010 11:44

IMHO that web-site looked cluttered (although not as bad as some). I found it difficult to extract waht a new post was saying in between the quotes and the automaitc signatures. Plus all the info about the poster was distracting: on Mumsnet you can choose to find out more about the poster (if they have made their profile public) by clicking on their name.

And seeing how many people have read yuor thread could be very depressing if either no-one read it and/or people read it but decided it was not worth bothering to reply.

RustyBear · 30/08/2010 11:47

The statistics were confusing, especially the one that said '8 replies, 0 views'!, which didn't change after I'd viewed it...

Great! Glad you enjoy it. Go off and use it more often then.

Oh, we do love our housepricecrash infiltrators here, too! They spice things up.

No editing, no quoting, no messing, no telling who has been stalking, FGS no branching of threads.

I would like Active Convos to list the OP as well as the most recent poster.

And I would like to be able to bookmark in some way so I can catch up to where I last read a thread.

But the only changes I want to make are changes to the way I see things, not changes to the way we communicate.

frasersmummy · 30/08/2010 12:07

I think bookmarking your place in a thread would be good

you stumble across a funny thread you get 4 pages in and get distracted by work /kids when you come back you cant remember where you left off

Mooos · 30/08/2010 12:10

Mutt - your name suits you very well.

TrillianAstra · 30/08/2010 12:12

Wow did I touch a sore point there? Is one supposed to be a loyal Mumsnetter and not read anything else? Take a deep breath Scotty.

Moos, you're stirring. It's very obvious, too.

But carry on. Here, here's some rope.

CupcakesHay · 30/08/2010 12:15

I like it, but the only thing i would like added (if it's poss) is to go stright to the last bit you read on a post. because if you leave a post, at say page 4... and then come back 2 days later - you forget what you have read already and have to trawl through to see where you're up to.

Oh - and more emoticons! Grin i cna't get enough of those! I'd like a heart!

TrillianAstra · 30/08/2010 12:17

Yes, we prefer a more subtle style of trolling really - you need a thread title that makes people think it will be an interesting discussion, or one where they can offer advice. Then slowly drip-drip-drip so people don't realise you are a wacko until at least your 4th post. Jumping in saying MN is rubbish just doesn't cut it.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/08/2010 12:19

Yes I agree that sometimes its difficult to see whats been quoted ..and its a pain to use the italics feature around every word ..

Quotation marks do work, but you do know that you can just put the italics at the beginning and end of a chunk of text now? The same thing applies to bolding.

I do wish we had a standard feature for formatting (highlight text, click 'bold', etc) because otherwise I go to other forums and start typing with the little hats around words, and they look at me lke Hmm, but it's no big deal.

serenity · 30/08/2010 12:21

I go on other forums (fora?) that have quotes, and signatures and pretty names to reward you for number of posts (and have your joining date so you can feel smug rounding on a nOOb, Grin) and they're fine - don't move half as fast as MN though, so I think they need all that jubbins.

MN is fine the was it is (was? I use MN Classic too, no pages, first-to-last posts)

serenity · 30/08/2010 12:22

Would like an edit button though...
