Mumsnet forums need updating

I think it is one of the most old fashioned, user-unfriendly site I've ever seen Shock.

We can't reply to a particular person; we can't particularly see if someone has asked us something and it's just messy.

Anyone else think the same Hmm

I like it. Keep it simple. Add more visual stuff and it distracts from what people are saying as I have to admit I get very distracted by visual communication, which is a bit of a black art IMO. Words are just words though and less open to interpretation, therefore better for debate.

SecretNutellaFix · 30/08/2010 12:41

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

MN the way it is works fine- I prefer the simplicity, the way threads flow like a RL conversation would in a large group discussion.

I would like to be able to bookmark where I had got to on a particular thread, but it's not essential- I have a fairly good memory and can read quickly anyway so can catch up relatively easily.

Moos, perhaps you should try settling in for a bit instead of coming in like a bull in a china-shop and getting peoples backs up? As someone said earlier you wouldn't come into someone's house and insult their choice of decor, would you?

FrameyMcFrame · 30/08/2010 12:45

No, it is perfect as it is... don't change it please, I don't like change!

prettybird · 30/08/2010 13:06

To be fair on Mooos, she has been on here for a good few months.

Even if I do think tat her OP could hav ebeen worded a bit more constructively.

BitOfFun · 30/08/2010 13:12

I loathe discussion sites which have a quote function. You end up scrolling down half a page of quotes about quotes about quotes, only to read that poster's gem of wisdom at the end, which usually turns out to be "ROFL" or something equally fascinating.

Mooos · 30/08/2010 13:21

So it looks like a 60/40 split (60 being the people who don't want change) Ah well. Nutella - I have settled in - I've been here for nearly 2 years with a name change.

Now...if this was set up in another way I would get an email telling me there was a reply..but it doesn't work like that..so I'll say goodnight from me (from Australia)

OP posts:
tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/08/2010 13:22

I think a lot of this is about the people not the functionality, though. I belong to a small parenting forum in the States, and it has the functionality for tickers and sparkles and embedded quotes and photographs and whatnot. But nobody has a ticker, only about three people have any sort of sig (and they're the recipients of rolled eyes, frankly), and nobody would dream of writing ROFL unless they were being ironic.

So Mumsnet could change, or stay as it is, and it'd still be Mumsnet, I think.

PedlarsSpanner · 30/08/2010 13:22

I don't understand why you would get an email to tell you you had a reply, does your other site not do real-time posting?

[scratches head]

misdee · 30/08/2010 13:22

thats what threads i'm on thing is for ;)

MmeBlueberry · 30/08/2010 13:28

tortoise, I agree wholeheartedly.

The attraction of Mumsnet is the range of members it attracts, and the words they write (well, 20% of them). The gizmos in the forum do not make the forum - but it would make it a lot easier if it had a little more functionality.

I don't really understand the support for DOS era output. The enemy called below average, I suppose.

I am impressed with Tech as he seems to be going it alone with this technology, but there are so many off-the-shelf technologies that would be so easy to implement, I think even with the bandwidth of Mumsnet.

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 13:41

Who cares how many people are reading a thread? Why does it matter?

usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 14:07

oh yes,so you can ...thanks for pointing that out

CatIsSleepy · 30/08/2010 14:20

'Nothing changes if nothing changes.'
amen to that

MN is nice and simple and uncluttered
and that's the way I like it

and why would you want your inbox cluttered up with emails telling you someone's replied to your post?
just check 'Threads I'm on' or Threads I started'

usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 14:23

no to emails ..my inbox gets clogged up enough with fb notification emails

PedlarsSpanner · 30/08/2010 14:24

I think praps OP has become used to being spoonfed her fora

CatIsSleepy · 30/08/2010 14:27

it would be too depressing if you could see that loads of people had read your OP but no-one had replied!

usualsuspect · 30/08/2010 14:30

Me too...I prefer to think that my op has just been missed amongst the fast moving convos and not deliberately ignored Grin

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 14:32

"Nothing changes if nothing changes" - but then there's also plus ça change...

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 30/08/2010 14:36

"it would be too depressing if you could see that loads of people had read your OP but no-one had replied!"

totally agree. noone would ever post. at least if you cant see the views you can tell yourself that it just got lost and then bump.

and bump.

and bump.

and bump.

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 30/08/2010 14:37

dammit, cant italicise whole sentence.

Habbibu · 30/08/2010 14:39

60/40 split? Really? I haven't counted, but it doesn't look that close to me.

CatIsSleepy · 30/08/2010 14:41

i think Mooos is counting herself as 40%

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 30/08/2010 14:41

i think one or two people said "yeah, this might be ok, but tbh we like mn the way it is and find it easy enough to navigate" nowhere near a 60/40

Actually, MN needs a "DO THE STATS, STAT!" button.
