If I'd thought about it though, we might have been able to fly. But it wouldn't have been cheaper I don't think, when you add the cost of the taxi to the airport in the morning and factor in no cheaper tickets going back (the tickets on the train going back are less than 1/3 the train going there) plus we'd get home about 11 (thinking about it we'd have to get a taxi back from the airport too - too late for DH to drag DD2 out to get us, too late for her to be left alone with DS and no adult). Will have to polan other open days better - there are limited cheap tickets for the early train but they were all gone.

circular · 25/11/2014 07:55

Found with so many open days last term, (all just DD1 and me by train) found the rocket prices very hit and miss. Called the on-line company I used most, and they advised although tickets available from 3 months in advance, best bargains seam to appear about 2 months or 6 weeks prior to travel date.
Not much help when you only get 2 or weeks notice of audition dates though.

cathyandclaire · 25/11/2014 08:03

Shock Rabbit, will there be another audition day as well as the open day, or is this it?

circular · 25/11/2014 09:05

Rabbit Just a thought, but if your DD will be in London several times over the next 2 years, may be worth getting a 16 to 18 Oyster card. Gives half adult price tube and bus
travel.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 25/11/2014 09:13

Cathy - this is just an open day although there are playing sessions. She's in Y12 (but I hang around this thread because she did her GCSEs in Y10 when the DC of the other posters did theirs, plus she did 2 ASs in Y11, and we had a nice supportive community in the threads about those years. I don't know any of the people in the Y12 threads!). The way the guildhall open days are scheduled if we left it till Y13 her form would already be in!

Circular -probably. But we go to London such a lot - as you know I'm there for work several times a month - that I always have some Oyster cards hanging about. It's really not the tube that's the problem it's FGW! Our trains are slow, unreliable, infrequent and ridiculously expensive. :(

AmazingDisgrace · 25/11/2014 12:30

DD's form was sent to UCAS yesterday. Fingers Crossed for some good offers!

cathyandclaire · 25/11/2014 13:10

Aaaah, she'll be well in the swing of things for next year, hope she has a fab day (worth every penny ;) )
Good luck Amazing with UCAS!

Horsemad · 25/11/2014 17:53

Good Luck Amazing Smile

AmazingDisgrace · 25/11/2014 18:36

She has an offer already from Royal Holloway. That was fast! Grin

We're amazed at the speed that offer came in and it doesn't half take the pressure off a bit!

webwiz · 25/11/2014 20:53

Goodness me that was quick Amazing! Well done to your DD.

DS finally got his interview invitation from Cambridge so very excited here tonight. Its on December 8th so DS will be having a very low key 18th birthday on the 6th!

polkadottyme · 25/11/2014 21:11

Well done webwiz!!! The anxious wait is over can look forward to the next step. Seems like a endurance test this Oxbridge application process . By the looks of it they don't give him long to prepare though?? Bet your proud mum :)
Littleham- I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for your dd. I guess she wants to know either way keeping her in suspense must be agonising.

AmazingDisgrace · 25/11/2014 21:31

Oh fingers crossed for all of you with DC having Oxbridge interviews. Smile

webwiz · 25/11/2014 21:57

Thank you Polka and Amazing and yes it does feel like an endurance test. I had no idea how hard work it would be when DS decided to apply!

Mumslife..is Royal Holloway going to be your DD's firm or insurance? Depends if my DD gets offers from Queen Mary or Newcastle. She's thinking one of those as firm then one of her choices that offer at BBB as insurance.

I'd be tempted to choose two out of her top three and take my chances in Clearing if I didn't make the grades but I'm more reckless than her! Queen Mary said to her they'd look favourably on her if she missed a grade (particularly if they were her firm) as she's doing a related extra AS as well

Littleham · 25/11/2014 22:19

Thanks Polkadot. I don't think she quite realises the odds. Very brave to apply!

Littleham- As the great man himself Mr Winston Churchill once said:-
" Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to

continue that counts".

Your dd whatever the outcome I think she will succeed in life as she has the courage to go for it even if she feels she's against the odds , it is the brave and those that are not afraid of failure that go on to do great things.

Horsemad · 26/11/2014 06:56

Wow Amazing - is that the most speedy offer on this thread?! Grin That's so lovely for your DD.

Webwiz - exciting news from you too.

I am really loving this thread! Smile

AmazingDisgrace · 26/11/2014 10:38

Well if it isn't the quickest it must be right up there at less than 24hrs Horsemad!
