Thanks littleham for the tips will get dd to go and search these societies out. At least its a good alternative.
Circular- us mums have so much angst, we get worried if dc is too anti social so to speak as in not liking the normal scenes of teenagers drinking and clubbing worry if they will fit in and yet if we have a dc that do, do all those things we worry and hope they don't get into trouble with stuff associated with it. Can't win.

Polka

I have a friend whose DD joined the Christian Union at Uni, because they didn't go clubbing.

However, neither my DD1 or DD2 were clubbers, and they found lots of friends and societies that did not involve clubs. A lot of DD2's partying seemed to involve 'preloading' parties in friends' kitchens, then going to bed when the others went out to clubs.

seimum · 23/11/2014 22:31

Fairenuff

We got our DDs laptops for their birthdays before they went to Uni.
If they are using them full-time for study, they need to have decent sized screens and proper keyboards. If they are doing science/maths, then a keyboard with a number pad is v useful.
Our DDs' laptops generally lived in their room, so they don't have to be that portable.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 23/11/2014 23:11

When I was at uni - in the days of black and white (not really, I was at uni in the 80s but it feels like black and white telly days now, so long ago it was. Also, we did still only have a black and white telly then) - I was an inveterate clubbed although I did not drink (never have never will). I never went clubbing in Cambridge though because the clubs were a bit...tame. It really didn't harm my uni social life at all - I saved clubbing for when I was at home in London with my mates. At uni I did lots of music and sic fi stuff and while many of my peers did drink, the fact that I didn't really wasn't a problem for me or them.

Haven't read the whole thread yet as not been around for a whole but DD1 has an unconditional offer from Birmingham City Grin to do English Lit. She is beyond excited as we only went up last Saturday to see it. Her application was received by UCAS on Monday and the offer came through Tuesday.
Now to go back to the beginning to see how others are doing Grin

webwiz · 23/11/2014 23:31

Well done to your DD tapdancingmum that is very exciting Smile

polkadottyme · 24/11/2014 00:36

Siemum- that's good to know your DD's was able to go through uni life not having to go and do things they didn't want to or feel obligated to do so. To me dd going to uni is like the step they took from going to juniors to a big comprehensive. But this time its a lot bigger and scarier. But to them I suppose its more exciting, then daunting.
Rabbit- these days students are specifically targeted at clubs and pubs offering them cheap booze, students are a huge market and in a way it promotes irresponsibility amongst the young. I'm a killjoy I know , but for some kids that's the only reason why they choose to go to uni to have this lifestyle and studying is 2nd place. I think my dd would have probably enjoyed uni life in the 80's more by the sounds of it. I preferred the 80's in general no mobiles, internet, social networks etc it was a fab era.
Well done tapdance on your dd getting a unconditional must feel very special to get one :)

Polka - for some people Uni has always been about boozing. My lecturer/academic friends reckon it's no worse now than in our day and further that more kids don't do it now than in our day (because of no grants basically).

Littleham · 24/11/2014 12:18

Well done to your dd tapdancingmum. Smile

Great news on the offer tapdancingmum Smile

Today I bought a 'fun' Xmas present - reuseable toaster bags Grin Thought they might come in handy when he's a student!

Eastwickwitch · 24/11/2014 17:57

Please may I join?
DS has finally finished his PS & the application is going in tomorrow. He sat the LNAT last week.
He wants to do Law & French with 1st choice Exeter but is dithering about Bristol or Leeds. Brum is also in the mix.

Leeds2 · 24/11/2014 18:07

Well done on the offer, tapdancingmum.

And hope your DS hears good news soon, Eastwickwitch.

Horsemad · 24/11/2014 18:53

Welcome Eastwick, hope he gets quick replies!

Eastwickwitch · 24/11/2014 18:57

Thanks. I've been having a little panic reading about all the offers on here, but that boy will not be rushed Grin
Well done to all your DCs that do have offers, must be such a relief.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 24/11/2014 19:19

Ouch, Rabbit. Where are they going?

Littleham · 24/11/2014 20:45

Hope the offers come soon Eastwickwitch. Fingers crossed.

How about coaches Rabbit? Is that price with a railcard? Shock

OP posts:
polkadottyme · 24/11/2014 21:07

Eastwick- welcome to the UCAS club:) hope your ds gets his first offer soon.
Rabbit- would travelling by taxi/private hire be cheaper than £300. Hope your dd will like the uni since it cost so much to get there.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 24/11/2014 22:14

Guildhall. We have to be on the sparrowfart express, so railcards don't work. Even leaving home at 6:15 we won't actually be there at the start but hopefully not long after. I'm just going to go to the finance lecture for parents then go to my office for the rest of the day while she does her stuff. Wouldn't have been any cheaper if we'd stayed over cos the cost of the hotel would destroy the saving from cheaper train tickets. :(
