Uni offers

Aurea · 05/03/2023 14:20

Is anyone else waiting for any Scottish uni offers for their DC?

My DC is awaiting a response for computer science at Edinburgh, St As, and Glasgow. He's had a Cambridge post interview rejection and also waiting to hear from Durham.

He's applied with 6 As at higher and 1 A at advanced higher from S4-5 so this exceeds all standard grade requirements (non contextual state school).

I'm at a bit of a loss and starting to tear my hair out. Anyone else in the same boat?

Thanks @SandyIrvin

That's kind of you to reply.

Yes, Beaverbank was on his list of five choices. His academics is all in George Sq which is around 30/35 min walk away, I understand. He'll be under 22 for the first four years of his course and he's already got a Young Scots card for free bus travel so that's all good. Can I ask if Beaverbank is considered New Town? I'm not very familiar with the areas of Edinburgh.

@Aurea: Strictly speaking Canonmills area. i used to work near there. DD says better than ones in Leith (although the one at the start of Leith walk is okay)

DD says if an ensuite is a deal breaker then a good option. If the travel is getting him down tell him to think about the alternative of dealing with flatmates (and their friends) uncleanliness. DD has had particular problems this year with international students who are used to servants. DD stayed in a similar type of halls as your son in 2nd year (Unite Salisbury Court). They are much better than the uni at policing cleanliness and noise so less issues than fully Edinburgh uni owned accommodation.

Thanks Sandy. This is all reassuring and useful to know.

I'm getting excited for him now! 😊

Beaverbank, looks good. I live in Edinburgh. It is very handy to Broughton Street which is choc full of bars and restaurants. My Apple Maps tells me it is a 45 min walk to George Square, but young legs may get there quicker! A regular shuttle would also help.

Aurea · 27/04/2023 21:10

Thanks CelticSong.

It sounds perfect particularly as he can walk a mile in 13 mins. He has long legs as he's 6'3"!!!!

Anyone else still waiting?

flumpalamp · 01/05/2023 22:39

Yes. Still waiting for Strathclyde. DS has exams tomorrow so hoping good news or no news as anything else would be awful.

Runningslow · 01/05/2023 22:59

Yes that’s what’s worrying me too. It would have been good to know what dc needed before her exams started.

flumpalamp · 02/05/2023 18:35

He got an offer!!!!

Hallelujah

Aurea · 02/05/2023 20:23

That's brilliant news Flumpalump! 🎉🎉🎉

What a relief!! Is Strathclyde his first choice then?

Aurea · 02/05/2023 20:26

Yay!!!!
Just reread the thread and realised that Strathclyde was the one and only - so EVEN bigger congrats to you and your DS!!!!!

Which subject was this for?

Aurea · 02/05/2023 20:27

Now I see it was history!!! 🫣

Yes. Worth the wait but god so stressful.

flumpalamp · 02/05/2023 22:03

It was what he wanted so to get it is just brilliant. Now to tackle accommodation

Wbeezer · 03/05/2023 19:42

Yes we've swapped waiting for an offer for waiting for an accommodation offer, apparently they are trying out a new system this year 🙄. I am not really managing to be Zen about it...

Just noted Strathclyde are not offering accommodation to those who live within 25 miles unless in SMID 1 and 2 - which will be a significant proportion of areas within 25 miles. So you could live in a flat a couple of miles from the university and be offered accommodation, whereas a student who lives in the highlands might end up having to turn down their place because they can’t find accommodation? The university accommodation itself is in SMID 2 so you are not trading up area.

flumpalamp · 03/05/2023 22:01

We submitted bid for Strathclyde and it said we wouldn't know until June, once all offers are in.

Sounded like a lottery thereafter

Wbeezer · 04/05/2023 09:47

I'm a bit worried about the GSA accomodation, they don't have very much. We're about 35-40 miles as the crow flies but rural so wildly unhelpful public transport options and DS doesn't drive. I'm nervous that I'll end up running him to the station every morning and it'll be back to school runs again after only one year of freedom! That is a worst case scenario though!

Aurea · 04/05/2023 10:02

Does anyone know about the availability of private accommodation in Edinburgh? Is there more of a supply than Glasgow and St As?

The problems in Glasgow are appalling considering the size of the city. I'm sorry for everyone's stresses.

@Aurea until last year private accommodation for students was plentiful in Edinburgh (although expensive compared to Dundee/Glasgow). DDs friends only started looking in May/June and some had term time only lets. However last year was a bit difficult so much so that Edinburgh uni had to provide accommodation for returners. Not sure whether this was because of bulge year or landlords who rent to students term time but AirBnB in summer selling up or general move away from fixed term tenancies. Most start looking earlier than May now but not as mad as Durham where my DS1 lives ( students queuing up overnight in December). Those that struggled tended to be the poorest (one of DDs classmates ended up commuting from Manchester till October when postgraduates started to give up accommodation).

Aurea · 04/05/2023 11:44

That's very helpful Sandy, thank you.

It's not as bad as I feared then. Interestingly, the halls (Beaverbank) he has been allocated this September (first year) still have rooms available which are not let through the university itself. I feel that's a positive sign.

Have you heard anything? Fingers crossed.

Aurea · 08/05/2023 08:25

Hoping everyone has a lovely bank holiday today. 😊

Thought it might be a good moment to review offers on this thread to see where all are DCs are heading and support anyone still waiting to hear back.

I'll start:

My DS applied for computer science. He has received offers from Edinburgh University (unconditional), Durham (AA advanced higher), Cambridge rejection and withdrew from St Andrews and Glasgow in April as he wanted to firm Edinburgh.

He is quite happy with his offer and has accepted university accommodation at Beaverbank Place.

He has three advanced higher exams left: mechanics, physics and chemistry but doesn't seem too worried (unconditionalitus)😬.

I'm one relieved mum!

How about all of you.........?🤞

Our wait started in October because my son applied for medicine . . . not sure if any other subjects also have to apply in October? What has been most stressful really is the amount of time spent on first of all UCAT, then personal statement (which everyone has to do, right) and then preparing for interviews, and how much time that takes away from actually studying. My son is someone who needs to work very hard and very consistently to get the grades - it doesn't come easily to him - so we are all (me secretly) a bit worried that he could still fall at the final hurdle of actually getting the grades. He is doing Geography, Biology and Chemistry for AH. Feels pretty good about Geography but did not find AH Biology easy, including some bits he said that were like nothing he'd come across previously.

This is when he got offers:

2nd April St Andrews BBB
8th March Glasgow BBC
1st March Edinburgh BB
23rd February Dundee BBB

His firm is Edinburgh and has insured with St Andrews, which really makes no sense as it is a higher grade requirement. Edinburgh was always first choice, just fortunate that is also the lowest offer.

Aurea · 08/05/2023 12:33

Congrats BluePeach!🎉

Four medicine offers are amazing.

Which accommodation is your son going to pick in Edinburgh?

My son is also doing AH Chem this week.

Fingers crossed for a happy outcome for yours. 🤞
