Uni offers

Is anyone else waiting for any Scottish uni offers for their DC?

My DC is awaiting a response for computer science at Edinburgh, St As, and Glasgow. He's had a Cambridge post interview rejection and also waiting to hear from Durham.

He's applied with 6 As at higher and 1 A at advanced higher from S4-5 so this exceeds all standard grade requirements (non contextual state school).

I'm at a bit of a loss and starting to tear my hair out. Anyone else in the same boat?

UCAS is down for four days after 6pm this evening so no offers will come out after that until Tuesday

Ffs, thanks for the heads up.

namechange3388 · 31/03/2023 11:01

Edinburgh rejection came in today from ucas so it's not down

Aurea · 31/03/2023 11:05

Very sorry to hear that. It's horrible to be disappointed.
What subject was this for?

Also, Plum - I'm also very sorry to hear there is no news yet. Hopefully no news is good news. Keep the faith.

DD has just had an offer through for Stirling so that's all the offers in, and decision time...

Aurea · 01/04/2023 08:08

@WednesdaysPlaits
Do you know when UCAS is back up again?

Thanks!

Apparently its down for four days so presumably Wednesday but I only know this from TSR so don't quote me on it.

WednesdaysPlaits · 01/04/2023 11:14

actually their website says back up and running again on 3rd April

Aurea · 01/04/2023 11:14

Thanks. 😊

For anyone waiting on St Andrews they released a load of decisions at the back end of last week but since UCAS is down the notification emails haven't been sent through. but if you log into the UCAS portal they are there. It's a no for DS but hopefully more positive news for others.

namechange3388 · 06/04/2023 14:06

We've still had nothing apart from a rejection from edinburgh

Anyone else?

Aurea · 06/04/2023 14:09

I'm sorry to hear this. This must be hard. Which subject is it for?

My DS has two offers from Edinburgh and Durham for computer science but nothing from St As and Glasgow.

Not heard anything. Just hope they don’t time it for the morning of exams.

I hadn’t thought about that. It is really rubbish that they are going into exams with this still hanging over them.

FannyFifer · 06/04/2023 23:46

After two rejections from Dundee we finally have conditionals for Stirling.
Already has a college place as back up though.
Anyone know what an A at advanced higher is equivalent to, like does that count as 2 highers?

Shelefttheweb · 07/04/2023 00:01

Looking at Tariff points:
Advanced Higher (A): 56
Higher (A): 33

i have also just discovered that not all foundation apprenticeships are equal. Most are worth 42 points but engineering and civil engineering are worth 56

Aurea · 07/04/2023 06:48

I think most universities treat an A at higher to be an equivalent level to a B at advanced higher.

The advanced higher is widely considered more impressive (from what I've read), hence the high UCAS tariff points as there is much independent study involved.

Running slow - what courses/unis are you still waiting on? This must be very hard for you.

Is it simply too late to Apply Now for 2023 entry? Ds 'didn't feel ready' but now does? (Looking at Napier / Abertay for Computing courses). Obvs best thing would be to call them directly but wondered if Clearing still exists & if you can apply at that point?

IkBenDeMol · 07/04/2023 16:46

Yes I think you can still apply until the end of June - and you go into the clearing system rather than applying for specific courses? Not sure. Info on UCAS website.

medianewbie · 07/04/2023 16:58

@IkBenDeMol Thank you x

Tariff-wise, Advanced Higher grade D (32 points) is closest to a Higher A (33 points)

IkBenDeMol · 07/04/2023 19:38

Advanced H
A = 56 UCAS points
B = 48
C = 40
D = 32

Higher
A = 33 UCAS points
B = 27
C = 21
D = 15

as a comparison to A-levels
A* = 56
A = 48
B = 40
C = 32
D = 24

However.......

Edinburgh University states in their entry requirement page on their website:

Study at Advanced Higher level is excellent preparation for your studies at Edinburgh. Your achievement in Advanced Highers may also contribute to the entry requirements for Highers, with Grades B and C at Advanced Higher equating to Grades A and B at Higher respectively.

The next sentence puts that into context: “This means that if you do not achieve our entry requirements by the end of S5, progression to Advanced Highers in S6 may be taken into consideration.” In other words, if you do not hold a Higher at grade A then they may accept an Advanced higher at a grade B.

They do the same for Nat 5s: “If you do not hold a subject that is required at National 5, you must have achieved, or be predicted to achieve, a Higher or Advanced Higher pass in the subject. Depending on the grade required at National 5, this may equate to achieving a B or C grade at Higher or Advanced Higher.”

In addition where a B is required at Advanced Higher (Medicine) they do not accept a Higher at grade A in its place.

IkBenDeMol · 08/04/2023 08:10

This is very true. DD is in S6 and is applying to unis at the moment, the only ones of her friends who have conditional offers based on Adv H are those doing medicine/dentistry and one who is applying for Law courses at English universities. Highers are what matters.

Anecdotally, for some courses conditional offers just doesn't seem to be a thing. DD is applying for primary teaching and the Teaching Council requires entrants to have at least a B in H English and at least a B in Nat 5 maths. DD has a couple of friends who don't have one or the other and are re-sitting this year, or in the case of one boy, taking H English for the first time. Straight rejection, rather than a conditional. Teaching though is one of those courses where there are unlikely to be non-Scottish applicants as it only qualifies you to teach in Scotland.

There are lots of people though who think Adv H is the same as A-level and it's clearly not, given that UCAS gives more points to a B at Adv H than a B at A level.
