Uni offers

Aurea · 05/03/2023 14:20

Is anyone else waiting for any Scottish uni offers for their DC?

My DC is awaiting a response for computer science at Edinburgh, St As, and Glasgow. He's had a Cambridge post interview rejection and also waiting to hear from Durham.

He's applied with 6 As at higher and 1 A at advanced higher from S4-5 so this exceeds all standard grade requirements (non contextual state school).

I'm at a bit of a loss and starting to tear my hair out. Anyone else in the same boat?

There are lots of people though who think Adv H is the same as A-level and it's clearly not, given that UCAS gives more points to a B at Adv H than a B at A level.

They have the same number of points but the grades are offset due to the A star top grade at A level. So A star at A level is equal to A at AH.

Having said said, Cambridge require an A1 at AH in place of A star and an A2 at AH in place of an A at A level - the only place I have seen that breakdown of AH grades used.

So DS has been rejected from everywhere apart from waiting for Strathclyde.

He's so downhearted.

Anyone else heard from Strathclyde?

Aurea · 17/04/2023 18:28

That's horrid flumpalump. I really hope he has some good news soon. Which subject is this for?

History

Not looking good.

Aurea · 17/04/2023 21:57

So sorry flumpalump. Where else did he apply? My DS is still waiting to hear from St As and Glasgow for computer science but at least he has two other offers.

This is so unfair on students about to start exams. Yes you will get over it and come up with alternatives. But it takes a few days to do that and get round your disappointment, and if you are revising or even taking an exam that day it must really knock the wind out of your sails. Students really should be told well in advance of exams.

flumpalamp · 20/04/2023 21:00

Still nothing from Strathclyde. I don't know if that's good or bad but it's torture

Aurea · 21/04/2023 08:05

I would guess if it was an outright rejection, you'd have heard? Sorry you're having to go through this stress. 🤞for good news soon.

I wonder if he is on a reserve list which get offers as other students firm up offers elsewhere? I would have thought they would have a better handle on what proportion accept so they wouldn’t need to do that, but the last few years have been all over the place.

Have you been drawing up a Plan B? Having an alternative in place would help him process another rejection. A year out to reapply can feel daunting and disappointing but it could be a real opportunity, if nothing else to earn some cash.

balzamico · 21/04/2023 11:24

We're still waiting on Edinburgh- according to the Student Room spreadsheet there's been a flurry of (almost all) rejections in the last 10 days as the 30th (when they've said they'll get most offers out by) approaches.
I vacillate between hoping she'll hear and hoping she doesn't as no news is good news - or is it??

Bluepeach · 21/04/2023 17:52

My DS got offers on these dates

2nd April St Andrews
8th March Glasgow
1st March Edinburgh
23rd February Dundee

I thought it was a painfully long wait - surprised to read about those still waiting!

Aurea · 21/04/2023 19:41

Just got back from an offer holder day at Edinburgh for computer science which was a very positive experience.

We were lucky enough to meet up with another poster on this thread 👋 and it was great getting to know the pair of you.

Although my son is still waiting to hear from St As and Glasgow, I think he's minded to go ahead and firm this weekend (over Durham) and start moving forward with the next chapter.

I'm so very sorry to hear about those of you who are still waiting for offers. Sending the very best of wishes.

remember there is the clearing process as another means to find university courses.

flumpalamp · 21/04/2023 23:18

@WednesdaysPlaits

Can you ring admissions? I'm dying to know so he can plan

Runningslow · 21/04/2023 23:32

I rang admissions, and was just told that the deadline is 17th May and they’re working through the applicants.

Aurea · 23/04/2023 07:55

Edinburgh MInf (computer science integrated masters) now firmed by my DS so there's no going back (unconditional offer). Feeling relieved and happy for him. Now to look at accommodation options.

Sending positive thoughts everyone's way.

Hi Aurea! It was great to meet you and your DS at the Edin offer holders day! It was such a good day and I really thought the Informatics dept couldn't have been more warm & welcoming. Well done to you guys on firming Edin for MInf. I really hope my DD ends up getting her grades so we can join you in Sept. Hopefully we'll go from having met on Mumsnet to lifelong friends! A big thank you again for being the OP who set up this thread, which has been such a great source of intel & support during some v anxious times. X

Aurea · 24/04/2023 07:13

Thank you for your kind words Plum. 🥰

Sending the very best of luck to your daughter to achieve her grades. 🍀 Really hoping they end up in Edinburgh together. x

Aurea · 25/04/2023 15:54

Aww thanks Beachcitygirl 😊. That's kind of you to say so.

Remind me where your daughter is going? I think she applied for English lit at St As amongst others?

beachcitygirl · 26/04/2023 12:07

Yes, she's off to St A's

Wow! That was quick!

Edinburgh Uni only firmed two days ago and already his accommodation has been allocated - Beaverbank. Does anyone know anything about this residence?

It's a 30 min walk to George Square but there also seems to be a shuttle bus.

OP posts:
SandyIrvin · 27/04/2023 10:00

@Aurea asked my DD who does a halls job. Has good reputation (run by private company on behalf of uni). Only downside (in DDs opinion) is the location (quite far away from campus - area itself is nice). However with the shuttle bus (and free regular buses until you are 22) then maybe not an issue for your DS. Plus lots if students (mainly rich ones) choose to live in New Town in subsequent years. DD much prefers the Marchmont/Bruntsfield areas. Do they still get to pick top 5? Was Beaverbank on the list?. There is usually an opportunity to switch not initially but definitely at end of 1st term.
