Uni offers

152 replies

Aurea · 05/03/2023 14:20

Is anyone else waiting for any Scottish uni offers for their DC?

My DC is awaiting a response for computer science at Edinburgh, St As, and Glasgow. He's had a Cambridge post interview rejection and also waiting to hear from Durham.

He's applied with 6 As at higher and 1 A at advanced higher from S4-5 so this exceeds all standard grade requirements (non contextual state school).

I'm at a bit of a loss and starting to tear my hair out. Anyone else in the same boat?

Hoping good news will be coming your way soon. 🤞🍀

My DD has had Glasgow and Edinburgh offers last week, which is early ish as can often be up to May.

Aurea · 14/03/2023 23:01

Congrats!!

Which subject is this for?

Politics & History

Oodelest · 15/03/2023 21:11

@OnaBegonia congrats, can I ask what the offer is as these are the subjects my DD is wanting to apply for (for next year admission). She’s very dyslexic and is hoping for a mix of As and Bs at Higher.

OnaBegonia · 15/03/2023 21:22

@Oodelest
DD has applied though an access course so not based on Highers, she left school in S4 due to her dad being terminally ill and returned to access course rather than S6, I believe it's the equivalent of needing AABBC. It's good to know there are other paths to University.

Oodelest · 15/03/2023 21:32

I’m sorry to hear this and thank you @OnaBegonia , good luck to your DD, I know several folk who have gone to uni via access.

OnaBegonia · 15/03/2023 21:49

@Oodelest
Thank you, she's delighted and knows her dad would be so proud of her, as am I.
There are many routes to uni, I hope your DD finds her way.

Wbeezer · 16/03/2023 10:21

DS3 has had his first knock back from Edinburgh College of Art, not very surprising as it has a 7% acceptance rate for Scottish applicants on the course he wanted but I wish he'd put some safe choices on his UCAS form. He's bounced back quickly, as is his way, and will stay at college for another year and try again next year.
Feel a bit sorry for him, DH and I are both alumni and it was easier in our day.

Aurea · 17/03/2023 07:44

I'm sorry to hear that Wbeezer. I'm glad he has a back up plan and best of luck for next year.

Ds2 has applied to all 5 Scottish art colleges and has received an offer for his first choice, Dundee today. He’s thrilled but has to get one A in the 2 highers he is sitting this year (graph comm crash and Physics resit). Nothing yet from any of the other unis.

Mammut · 21/03/2023 11:52

@wheezer where can you find the acceptance rates for Scottish applicants for individual courses?

Runningslow · 21/03/2023 13:13

Still not heard anything for my dd. It’s really stressful especially as her friends have all got offers now. Got good grades in Highers so wasn’t expecting this big to be so hard.

Aurea · 21/03/2023 13:16

Which subject is it for Running?

My DS still has no Scottish uni offers for comp sci. He has well above the standard grade requirements as well.

Thank goodness he also applied to an English one.

DD still waiting on offers from 2 unis - Aberdeen and Napier. She has conditionals for Dundee and Stirling.

But she was totally thrilled to get an unconditional for Strathclyde yesterday.
All for Psychology.

No clue on which Uni is the "better" out of that bunch. Strathclyde looking the favourite at the moment, Aberdeen (too far), and she doesnt fancy Napier.

She chickened out of applying to Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews, as she has no circumstances for reduced offers.

OnaBegonia · 21/03/2023 19:08

@Twix42
My older DD went to Strathclyde and loved it, it's got a great reputation, she still lives in Glasgow.

Wbeezer · 22/03/2023 00:39

@Mammut googling to find other people's freedom of information requests.
I like to manage expectations a bit and prepare myself to help with plan B.
I wish DS had applied to a bigger range of places but he only applied to Edinburgh and Glasgow! I encouraged him to try Dundee because I like that they kept the general first year but they don't have a fashion dept and that's his thing ( alongside overconfidence)
I think we used up all our UCAS offer karma when DS2 got into St Andrews a few years ago.
Congratulations to your DS, I'm sure he'll have a great time.

Wbeezer · 23/03/2023 15:58

Well, I'll have to dial back my pessimism a bit, DS had an offer from Edinburgh for Textiles this morning, his second choice subject but I think he'll accept if he doesn't get a fashion offer from Glasgow.

Mammut · 23/03/2023 19:56

Good news @Wbeezer , but hope he gets the offer he wants. Ds got a knock back from Edinburgh today. I like the foundation year at Dundee too. He’s pretty sure he’s going to accept but he was really impressed with GSA at the open day so it may be a bit of a dilemma if he gets an offer from them. He probably won’t though.

Aurea · 24/03/2023 18:47

Edinburgh offer came in around an hour ago. 🎉

An unconditional offer for the MInf integrated masters in computer science. He is state schooled but not contextual. He is still waiting to hear from St As and Glasgow.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for everyone......

OnaBegonia · 24/03/2023 20:27

@Aurea
Well done
He is state schooled but not contextual.
why mention it then? Not one of my 4DC know anyone private schooled, though on MN there seems a large number.

Aurea · 24/03/2023 20:48

@OnaBegonia

It has been widely reported in the press that last year, Edinburgh university only offered places to Scottish students from deprived backgrounds in nine courses including law, English and history. No non-contextual offers were made for these courses regardless of level of grades or quality of application.

I wanted to reassure other mumsnetters that a non contextual student has an offer for Edinburgh this year, as I am aware of widespread concern in my DC's school. See article below.

That's great Aurea, at last!

Plum8 · 25/03/2023 09:16

Hi Aurea! So thrilled for you and your DS! That’s just brilliant. My DD still hasn’t heard from anywhere she’s applied to - including Edin and St A’s. We’re trying to help her manage the stress but it’s honestly really difficult especially for a girl who has clinical anxiety and ADHD….here’s hoping for some news next week (what we said last week and the one before)…..but Aurea, I’m really so pleased for you and a big thank you for setting up this thread which has been v helpful and reassuring.

Aurea · 25/03/2023 10:30

Thank you so much Plum.

I really feel for you both and hope your daughter receives an offer very soon. We didn't realise how competitive an application for Computer science was until just recently. It's a horrible wait for the kids who've worked so hard.
