Views on Sunak 'blocking gender bill'

I would describe myself as gender critical and opposed to this bill but this doesn't sit right with me.

Sturgeon will just bleat on and on about sovereignty and he's handed her more of a platform IMO.

What do you all think?

Yes, in a segregation unit with women and sharing communal areas with them.

i agree that something had to be done about it and that it had to be blocked...

if it was the only way to stop it - then so be it!

Ah, it seems she was trying her usual weasel wording. He won’t be held in Cornton Vale (which is closing next month) but will be transferred to another woman’s prison -though she didn’t mention that bit.

Is she really that stupid to think if he gets put in a different women's prison that it won't be front page? This is not going to blow over.

Are you sure? News outlets reported on his move to a male prison and Sturgeon’s spokesperson confirmed he wouldn’t be incarcerated on the “female estate”. Is she telling porkies again?

Shelefttheweb · 27/01/2023 10:35

Cornton Vale is closing to be rebuilt. My understanding is meantime the women there will be house in women-only wings of the ‘male estate’

Shelefttheweb · 27/01/2023 10:36

Which is very convenient if you want to hide the fact that women are being looked up with a serial rapist.

Shelefttheweb · 27/01/2023 10:39

And why would he be put in the male estate? After all Nicola Sturgeon made it clear she thinks sex offenders who identify as women are women and numerous proposed amendments to the GRR to prevent exactly this were voted down by her party.

Because they wanted to get it through at any cost (despite warnings!) And then claim democracy is under threat when Westminster (rightly) steps in!

I am glad this case has come to light as it shows all the issues and the outcries of attacking democracy have gone quieter as a result! It also highlights the issue to the wider public!

Even the very strong SNP supporters (which put banners in their windows about Westminster involvement with democracy and rainbow colours) by me have taken them down this week following this case!

Media outlets are saying he’s at a male prison though - is that not true?

Sturgeon very carefully said the predator would not be in Cornton Vale and that rapists would not be put in women's prisons (I think Cornton Vale is the only one in Scotland?).

Bearing in mind the weasel words used on this issue and insistence that predators would never abuse the rules and that anyone who suggested otherwise was a bigot, I'd want much more specific guarantees that rapists and sex offenders would never be housed in a women's unit or any kind of women's accommodation block.

SauMore · 27/01/2023 13:46

@SirChenjins there are mens prisons such as HMP Edinburgh which says it also houses females. So I would assume some have a womens unit

SirChenjins · 27/01/2023 14:08

Yes, Saughton has a women’s unit - but I imagine/hope he’s been housed in the main part which is for males?

I think that's where the ambiguity is. We were only told Bryson wouldn't be held in a women's prison. So in other words not cornton vale

SirChenjins · 27/01/2023 15:13

Typical waffle from Sturgeon - no surprise there. I’m sure his details of his whereabouts will come out soon, it’s not something that can be kept quiet for long.

Rainbowshit · 27/01/2023 21:09

Just been having a look through the Twitter accounts of some of the non SNP/green GRR politicians that supported it.

Cole-hamilton, Monica Lennon, pam Duncan Glancy, Kezia digdale etc.

They've all gone a bit quite on GRR. Wonder why?! 🤔

Sugarfree23 · 28/01/2023 09:07

Anyone else waiting for a massive 360 turn and more?

SNP still have the need to be 'different' to England they cannot do it through GRR so I suspect they'll end up with a oh no we can't allow this to happen again...and we will protect women much better than England.

Maybe I'm dreaming

SirChenjins · 28/01/2023 09:23

I really hope so@Sugarfree23 but I think Sturgeon is in too deep to do a u-turn and has too many powerful voices pushing this forward.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 28/01/2023 09:26

She needs the support of the Greens to get anything through parliament. And they will not support any changes. Because they are batshit crazy.

Even with all the stooshie about "Isla Bryson" and the rest of the trans identified males locked up in prison, Sturgeon will carry on with the "nothing to see here" nonsense.

Shelefttheweb · 28/01/2023 12:08

A 360 degree turn wouldn’t be very helpful....

Shelefttheweb · 28/01/2023 12:08

But she is good at spinning

Theunamedcat · 16/01/2023 19:52

Someone needs to block the bill rather than throw women and children under the bus why not him? Is it because of the visual? Westminster blocking? You think this will strengthen her squeals for indyref 2?

it could potentially do the opposite, ppl think thank f we’re still part of uk

SirChenjins · 28/01/2023 12:11

She’s good at spinning as too many are willing to look the other way because Independence.

Another day another dangerous male prisoner approved for a womens prison!
Seriously how can they not see its being used for loopholes rather then by genuine people with body dysmorphia (sorry my spelling is horrific!)
I'm glad this is all showing a limelight on crazy decisions made but I do think Nicola Sturgeon is backed into a corner and we all know generally when that happens she goes on the attack and digs heels in more rather then admit she is wrong!

annabelindajane · 28/01/2023 18:47

Keeping the extraordinarily peculiar Greens on side is a priority .Patrick has a tight noose on Nicola’ s neck . However majority MSPs who are as we know second rate regional administrators seem to be. On some sort of ‘queer’ high.
Check out the Wings posting on 23 Jan to see Holyrood clapping and cheering Douglas/ Beth who had been part of the policy making machine behind the GRR bill and then read who Beth really is but I suggest you do it after your supper .
