Views on Sunak 'blocking gender bill'

I would describe myself as gender critical and opposed to this bill but this doesn't sit right with me.

Sturgeon will just bleat on and on about sovereignty and he's handed her more of a platform IMO.

What do you all think?

English politics should stay out of Scottish politics

That might be so... but this case isn't about English politics.

Scottishskifun · 24/01/2023 19:15

So today's news shows exactly what women have been going on about with this bill (and the Scottish prison system prior) with a convicted rapist awaiting sentencing sent to a women's prison. A rapist who conviently started transitioning after prosecution started.....one who will be kept in solitary condiment for now but can't be indefinitely as this will breach their human rights.

So I think it's safe to say posters aren't making up scenarios or thinking the law will be used for loopholes by some very dangerous men!

Lovinmyblanket · 24/01/2023 19:22

There was an amendment that would have applied to this rapist and stopped him going to a women's prison. It didn't pass.

Iseered · 24/01/2023 19:47

I am delighted it is being blocked if it shines a light on the path Scotland is going down. What's being reported today with regard the violent rapist is indefensible.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 24/01/2023 20:42

I can't believe I live in a country where a rapist can be sent to womens prison. As if the women in there aren't vulnerable enough already. The whole situation is disgusting.

This with bells on^
What on earth are they going to do with this individual 🤷🏼‍♀️

And it seems the much lauded risk assessment is not to assess the risk to women, but rather the risk to men in placing them in a woman’s prison versus a male one.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 25/01/2023 08:00

The good news is that the MSM aren’t shying away from reporting on this for once, and are being clear that an intact male bodied rapist is being housed with women because the guidelines say HIS rights should be respected. Even though, like many so-called ‘trans’ prisoners, he only discovered his ‘true self’ when faced with the prospect of male prison. This was exactly the kind of thing we were told ‘never happens’ and it was bigoted to even suggest it does. The more these things are out in the open, the more the public realises this is not just about ‘being kind’ and is ALREADY being abused.

I believe he doesn’t even have a GRC (which as Scottish law would have it would put his legal rights beyond question), but the capture of various organisations is such that he apparently doesn’t even need one - self ID is in effect already present and his word is all that’s required. Surely what this shows is that trans rights trumping everyone else has already gone far too far, and the whole things needs re-examined.

Waitwhat23 · 25/01/2023 09:18

Below is a quote from James Morton, of the Scottish Trans Alliance who are the main (only?) group who have been involved in advising policy in regards to this issue. Women's organisations, female experts or indeed female inmates have had no input into this policy -

‘We strategized – we strategized – that by working intensively with the Scottish Prison Service to support them to include trans women as women on a self-declaration basis within very challenging circumstances, we would be able to ensure that all other public services should be able to do likewise’.

annabelindajane · 25/01/2023 12:43

Joanna Cherry someone who I assumed was blessed with more brainpower than the average MSP / Scottish MPs said on Radio 4 today that basically the Grr does not affect the equalities act and the Uk govt should keep its nose out of Scottish politics . Apart from sounding incredibly childish and silly she clearly wont acknowledge it’s implications either . The Scottish parliament represents less than a tenth of the Uk population and it would be totally undemocratic for them to dictate to the whole of Uk over these matters .

SirChenjins · 25/01/2023 12:57

That's very disappointing, but I suppose nationalist blood runs deep and judgement is clouded as a result.

That proves that though she sees through the 'trans cult', she is still a member of the 'SNP cult'. Makes her look a bit ridiculous. Perhaps she has been threatened with deselection y the SNP.

Could well be the SNP red line - agreeing with the Tories about a constitutional issue.

Shelefttheweb · 25/01/2023 20:49

Joanna Cherry has put up with a lot for her stance on trans issues, but she is still SNP through and through. If she had integrity should would have resigned the whip.

leepinglizards · 25/01/2023 20:59

Disappointed in Joanna Cherry, the only SNP MP I have ever thought talks a modicum of sense.

Joanna Cherry has said she believes Bryson is male and should not be in a women's prison.

I think the Scottish transrapist case has peaked a lot of people across Scotland and the UK. It's getting a lot of media attention and people aren't afraid to speak out any more. It's like everyone KNOWS that you can't change sex but didn't want to say it before because the prevailing wisdom was that this would be bigoted. But now a intact male rapist is placed in a woman's prison for assessment, and may end up there for a long period of time, because he SAYS he's a woman and no-one wants to or can defend it because it is, frankly, indefensible.

You can feel the tide changing with the politicians too. David Blunkett, a senior labour politician, was unequivocal on prime time TV that women's rights must come first, the UK was right to block this, and Kier Starmer should stop pussy footing around and take a strong stance. Russell Findlay on Drive Time BBC radio last night was explaining why he'd raised this in parliament and refused to refer to the rapist as 'she', as have a few other commentators, which is entirely reasonable in the circumstances.

The UK government have made clear in updated guidance that no transwoman prisoner will be placed in a women's prison if they have male genitalia or are convicted of a sexual offence, which blows out of the water any suggestion that the Scottish system is just following requirements of the Equality Act. The fact that he is even being assessed at a women's prison instead of being put in a male prison (as would be the case in England and Wales) is a purely ideological stance. The SG has the power to instruct the SPS but are choosing not to, and are instead passing the buck. If the GRR had gone through, this rapist would be considered a female for all purposes on his say so alone (as per court ruling) and have the legal right to be housed in a women's prison. There couldn't be a better example of how poorly thought through and outright dangerous this bill is, and how women's needs have been sidelined.

readsalotgirl63 · 26/01/2023 11:28

Entirely agree

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 26/01/2023 12:20

After all the buck passing yesterday by Keith Brown and the enormous media backlash, Nicola Sturgeon has apparently intervened and said that the rapist won't be housed at a women's prison after all. I wonder whether she regrets picking this particular hill to die on when picking a fight with Westminster?

Scottishskifun · 26/01/2023 12:43

So Nicola has stepped in and said they won't be housed at a women's prison but surely she is going against her own legislation as "Isla" started transitioning 2 years ago so could have obtained a 3 month certificate in that time had this case been 6 months down the line and not blocked by the UK govt!

Shelefttheweb · 26/01/2023 12:46

So Nicola thinks some of the amendments might have been valid afterall? Good think the UK government blocked her bill then!

FactsAreNotMean · 26/01/2023 13:34

Talk about blowing holes in your own arguments Sturgeon

BlueThursday · 26/01/2023 13:48

I’ve not seen for myself but read that NS said the rapist will “not be held in cornton vale”
this gives me little comfort because pretty soon CV will be closed and nobody will be there. Will he just be put to Stirling like the rest of the CV inmates?

Shelefttheweb · 26/01/2023 13:48

Ah, it seems she was trying her usual weasel wording. He won’t be held in Cornton Vale (which is closing next month) but will be transferred to another woman’s prison -though she didn’t mention that bit.

readsalotgirl63 · 26/01/2023 13:56

but has been remanded to Cornton Vale so is there now while the risk assessment is being carried out.
