It's all important experimental data whichever side you are on!

Haudyourwheesht · 23/03/2021 19:16

Well done @Cis.

According to the calculator I should be done in a couple of weeks. I'm in my early 40s. I think last weeks numbers have got the calculator all excited.

Scottishskifun · 23/03/2021 19:27

@forfucksakenett

Hopefully. Boris and Whitty et al weren't looking too positive at the briefing.
I think they were realistic with a 3rd wave in Europe travel is unlikely this summer but I also prefer that they are upfront.

I did spot this from Chris Witty on the BBC which to me makes sense

*the chances of eradicating Covid are "as close to zero as makes no difference". He says humans have only ever eradicated one disease, and that was smallpox.

The UK has good vaccines, but they're not 100% effective, and not everyone who should get a test to check if they are positive does get one, he adds.

He says it is not "realistic" at this point in time to aim for Covid to be entirely removed from the UK.*

I just wish the SG would also listen to a vast majority of scientists now and realise the elimination strategy is futile so let's concentrate efforts on safely opening the economy and getting on with the backlog of health services!

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 19:32

Good to hear acknowledgement that Covid zero is not achievable
Only hope the SG start listening to the science on this

UnderHisAye · 23/03/2021 19:39

Eradication and elimination are different strategies; they are each following the same strategy of as much elimination as possible. There's no difference.

We've had this (pedantic but important) discussion before Smile

Perihelion · 23/03/2021 19:39

Thanks forfucksakenett, I was wondering how many had been using the lateral flow tests, or rather how many were actually logging the results. Think it's being expanded to all high school pupils after Easter.

Scottishskifun · 23/03/2021 19:47

@UnderHisAye yes I know they are different and elimination aims for as close to zero as possible but I'm hoping that the. SG reexamine tier levels being based on the WHO data table as according to that we will never get to Tier 0 as the SG are using positive test results data (not community testing data)!

PostieModern · 23/03/2021 19:53

@HadEnoughOfBears

Is it schools that's driving the huge rise in cases around Livingston? It seemed crazy that one area had gone from zero cases in one 7 day period to about 80 in the next Shock
I had heard about cases at Peel Primary tgiugh

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 20:44

Really feel there is no chance of us getting back to any sort of normal

WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 20:46

The SG is proper insane on this. Feeling all hope is gone

Scottishskifun · 23/03/2021 21:16

I don't disagree with aiming to get cases low whilst we are easing out of lock down what I disagree with is that route map also having a tier system which is based on positive test results given many scientists have said that it's not achievable to reach that level of cases.
I believe that restrictions should be based around NHS capability, hospitalisations etc and not a rate per 100,000 as that could be a single school in a LA that sends the entire area back into a lock down system.
Or the country never gets past level 2 if all the mainland is being treated the same as the majority of the central belt has high cases.
Without vaccination of children we are still going to have cases and although trials are ongoing its not licensed for children yet.

I actually watched the BJ press conference today and he was asked this question by a journalist and basically said the same as NS.
WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 21:28

So, he’s shit too. But I live in Scotland

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 21:28

Can’t see it working if Scotland is stuck in semi lockdown while England has much more freedom
Can anyone direct me to what SG has said specifically on that
Zero Covid strategy will not work but it could destroy more businesses in the meantime

Scottishskifun · 23/03/2021 21:45

@user1487194234 well that's just it..... Its like the nobody knows card in QI as nobody knows......
The SG hasn't defined what "elimination" level is (despite being asked) what case numbers this equates to etc. They just respond with as low as possible...... 🙄

AnaofBroceliande · 23/03/2021 21:55
@forfucksakenett but there’s a highly effective vaccine now.

@RaspberryCoulis it’s becoming ludicrous.

For anyone who’s worried, I’m a fat 51 year old in a central area and on doing the Covid calculator my chances of catching and dying from Covid were 0.0027
I agree. I am similar. One of my parents died abroad from Covid. He was quite elderly, however, with numerous health conditions Sad.

Am looking at emigrating.

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 21:55

Obviously everyone wants cases as low as possible but not to the extent that everyone is on hold until the mythical date when that is achieved
Surely they must be honest with us about what the aim is

Scottishskifun · 23/03/2021 22:05

I have searched the SG website can only find a document which relates to last year and that says elimination with the aim of zero..... I don't think that's the case now but I can't be sure as they don't seem to have released it anywhere.
There was the covid strategy session in Scottish Parliament but again I don't think a figure was given......
Hence as much as I dislike Borris he says its about driving down numbers but their roadmap is based on vaccination figures and hospitalisation.
I don't think people will accept no info on it for too much longer though!

Bytheloch · 23/03/2021 22:17

@Cismyfatarse have not forgotten your white choc Twix free snack! Still very much, why? Who would buy?

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 22:19

The thing is if you ask the question’ Do you want no Covid cases’ the answer everyone will give is yes
But if the question is ‘ Do you want no Covid cases but with businesses going to the wall, travel restrictions, children not being properly educated etc ‘ the answer from a lot of people would be different

WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 22:21

@user1487194234 personally I don’t give a shit about cases. If the hospitals are ok. And I think most people really think that

user1487194234 · 23/03/2021 22:30

I wouldn’t go as far as that, but I do think the focus should be on hospitalisations /serious illness/ death
And I definitely think they should give us the details

forfucksakenett · 23/03/2021 22:36
@user1487194234 personally I don’t give a shit about cases. If the hospitals are ok. And I think most people really think that
I know nobody that thinks that. People are not just worried about dying. They're worried about long covid and post covid consequences like lung scarring. The higher the cases the more chance you have of catching it.

WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 22:40

In good news, statistics show that two thirds of people who say they have long Covid have negative antibody tests, so it’s mostly not down to Covid but other reasons; viral or psychological

WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 22:40

That’s in studies, obviously
