@kurtrussellsbeard

Who agreed it *@Scottishskifun*? I genuinely always thought it was an off the cuff comment by Salmond to encourage people to vote?
My understanding was that it was referred to by both sides of the debate.

The order agreement signed by UK and Scottish governments for a referendum was it to be held in 2014.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 17:31

@Scottishskifun I genuinely don't think it was agreed to in writing. I've never been able to find a genuine source for it ever.

Things have changed. Massively.

That being said I think the issues with salmond and the GRA and the perceived wokeness are going to hit the SNP in May and it's all going to be a moot point anyway. Sadly.

StarryEyeSurprise · 24/02/2021 17:36

The Edinburgh agreement explicitly said that the agreement does not stop a future referendum taking place.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 17:38

What have you not been able to find in writing?

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 17:42

An agreement that there would no further referendum for a generation.

Like @StarryEyeSurprise I thought it was agreed another referendum could take place in the future 🤷🏻‍♀️

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 17:44

An agreement not sure. Explicitly stated by the SNP, absolutely

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 17:48

Hmmm not sure about that. Alex Salmond said it in an interview as far as I'm aware.

Bit of a sound bite if you ask me to encourage folk to vote.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 17:58

Here you go, "once in a generation"

Tiers until the end of time
Tiers until the end of time
Tiers until the end of time
kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:04

Is that like an SNP campaign leaflet?

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:05

Yeah @StatisticallyChallenged I'm not sure that's weighty evidence that we should never ever have another referendum. It looks like campaign material. It's akin to Boris's bus of bullshit.

Designed to inspire you to vote rather than a cast iron guarantee to unionists that we'd never try again.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:09

Although Boris's bus was a straight out lie. This is more sentimental hyperbole.

littlbrowndog · 24/02/2021 18:11

But was it proper for NS. To spend 15 minutes answering questions on Salmond in a covid briefing ?

anon444877 · 24/02/2021 18:13

Oooh don't tempt me - sentimental hyperbole is almost the definition of a national identity

Right back to the wine.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:15

@anon444877 that's quite a reductive view of national identity but each to their own!

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 18:19

Nice try. But no.

Those screenshots are not from a campaign leaflet, they're from "Scotland's Future", the 670 page "guide to an independent Scotland" published by the Scottish Government. One of the examples is in Alex Salmond's preface.

Whether you like it or not it was said.

MaxNormal · 24/02/2021 18:23

@Lockdownbear we actually had plans in motion to leave last year, to be fair not at that point anything to do with disliking anything - apart from the weather.
The pandemic stopped that in it's tracks and I've been well and truly stuck ever since and feeling more trapped by the week.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:24

I never denied it was said. Not once.

That document was part of the campaign material and that's exactly what it reads like.

It's far from a cast iron promise that it would never happen again.

Let's find all the times it was said that if we voted for independence then we'd lose our place in Europe.

Stuff happens and things change. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We will find out in May if the people of Scotland want another referendum.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 18:37

Oh give it a break. It's a massive document published by the Scottish government. You said you hasn't been able to find it in writing, then tried "a campaign leaflet " and now you're going for whataboutery.

StarryEyeSurprise · 24/02/2021 18:38

It just says there's no plans for a future referendum.

I can't believe we're still using this as a stopper for any future referendums.

I'll try and find the statement re future referendums can take place.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:41

Okay @StatisticallyChallenged if there's another referendum you pull that out and use it to legally block it then. I'll enjoy that.

It's quite clearly campaign material. It doesn't matter what size of document it is. It was hardly impartial. It's prefaced by Alex Salmond ffs.

kurtrussellsbeard · 24/02/2021 18:42

I guessed at a campaign leaflet because you didn't put a source in the post 🤷🏻‍♀️

How is it whataboutery?

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/02/2021 18:43

Where were you thinking of going? Dh has been considering a few jobs abroad (he has dual nationality and is still an EU citizen) but I desperately want stability for my kids. By the time I was dc1's age, I'd lived in 3 different countries and 7 different houses.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2021 18:49

Do you actually hear yourselves?

"It was an off the cuff comment", "can't find it written down ", "it was a campaign leaflet", "doesn't count cos it's hyperbolic", "still campaign material", "what about Boris"

They lied through their back teeth about it

I'd have far more respect if you actually said you know what, they did say that and it was misleading. Regardless I'm in favour of another referendum. Your constant goalpost shifting is typical.

anon444877 · 24/02/2021 18:53

A referendum every time the polls look to go our way would've been closer.

MaxNormal · 24/02/2021 18:56

@Dinosauratemydaffodils Spain. No dependents and can both work from anywhere. But income came to a crashing halt when the first lockdown happened and then we missed the Brexit deadline.

We'll figure something out when things get more back to normal.

Are you guys tempted now or too concerned about disrupting the children?
