I've got this fear that they will put Glasgow up. This waiting week to week isn't going to be great.

Rae36 · 09/11/2020 19:03

I heard a rumour today that schools will finish a bit earlier for Christmas

I would like that, I was planning to take mine out early anyway to stay at home and then be better placed to see my parents over Christmas

anon444877 · 09/11/2020 19:08

If only they'll take them back early too in the long awful tail end of the holiday that'd be great!

waitforitwaitforit · 09/11/2020 19:23

We've already arranged to stay home (unlikely to be able to travel anyway, as crossing 2+ tiers) so I definitely don't want schools to close early. Plus, it'll never work. Those who aren't obeying the rules aren't suddenly going to quarantine themselves and their family for a couple of weeks in the interests of safety. They'll keep hanging out with friends and family, and spreading, and spreading...

anon444877 · 09/11/2020 19:44

On that - this is American so you'd need to look the numbers for your area but useful re holiday decision making. Maybe this is what is behind the close schools early logic?

The news that Edinburgh is highly unlikely to be moved down has really depressed me. Logically I knew it would be the case, but my friend was so positive that we would be that I allowed myself to hope that it would.

Work is so relentless at the minute, I just wanted a wee break somewhere in Tier 2 if we got moved. Now - ridiculously - I could go to Tenerife but not Pitlochry. I know first world problems and all that and I should be just grateful I'm alive, but we followed the stupid rules and huddled round a chiminea in Scottish November weather and our numbers are going down. This stick and carrot approach doesn't work very well with no carrot.

I guess they think Christmas is the carrot but that's such a long way off. And positive changes are far from guaranteed.

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 19:58

@rookiemere this Edinburgh hotel looks amazing

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/11/2020 20:03

The thing is Christmas is no carrot if they repeatedly show they aren't sticking to their own scheme. The tiers were meant to be a carrot - lower levels=more freedom. Who believes them about Christmas if they keep showing they lie?

rookiemere · 09/11/2020 20:06

@WouldBeGood I did look at that one, but due to teenager and dog I'd be on my own and it looks a bit opulent for a solo visit.

I have been pricing up Tenerife as I could be there before the mandatory coronavirus test and our annual insurance runs out, but my DM would probably disinherit me if she found out and I'm not sure I fancy it on my own.

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 20:08

Oh, yes, sorry that’s definitely a couple place.

Some sunshine is very tempting and travel shown not go spread it...

rookiemere · 09/11/2020 20:15

@WouldBeGood but didn't they say that there was a new strain brought back from Spain this summer from holiday makers ?

Chickenandrice · 09/11/2020 20:27

Rae36 where did you hear that? I would love that to be honest, the last week before Xmas is a waste of time anyway

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 20:31

I had read that there was no increase in infection as a result of travelling

NotAnActualSheep · 09/11/2020 20:38

OMFG that looks fab.
Wonders how social services would view it if we left DS9 alone with the cat for a night next week. That'd be fine, no?

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 20:42

@NotAnActualSheep fine- character building!

NotAnActualSheep · 09/11/2020 20:49

Grin Not sure the cat would view it like that. She definitely doesn't want her character built.

Lidlfix · 09/11/2020 20:49

The Guardian article on the 30th October cites a (at publishing not year peer reviewed) study where the research suggests that travel to Spain during the summer had introduced a new variant.

I am sure other research probably shows the opposite if you go hunting.

Like so many topics Confused

PapsofJura · 09/11/2020 20:51

That hotel looks amazing!!!

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 20:51

@NotAnActualSheep 😂

The perks of divorce mean that I might get to go

WouldBeGood · 09/11/2020 20:52

I fact, it might be my duty to go now, and report on this thread

NotAnActualSheep · 09/11/2020 20:59

Very, very jealous @WouldBeGood! (Actually, maybe I could go with the cat and leave DH and DS to do whatever boys do when they're left together at home overnight. Cat less likely to end up with all her fur shaved off that way).

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/11/2020 07:27

House of gods looks interesting. Wonder what the Cowgate is like just now? Not been down there lately

(Cowgate is normally home to lots of drunken stag and hen parties)

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 07:38

When I was young the Cowgare was pretty rough. Fun in the festival! And the original Sneeky Pete’s. I think it’s all gone upmarket now

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/11/2020 08:10

I wouldn't say it's upmarket tbh. Better on the surface maybe, but still heaving with drunks after dark in non covid times
