I don’t know if our marriage is going through a bad patch , or is this just our new normal

mumtobhoyandghirl · 28/09/2026 02:22

I don’t know if my marriage is going through a bad patch or if this has become our normal
I’m posting here because I genuinely need outside opinions. I don’t really want to discuss this with people who know us because obviously they know and love both of us, and I don’t want people taking sides.
My husband and I have been together since 2011, so 15 years. We have a blended family and children together, and there is a lot of good in our relationship. He has been an amazing dad, including to my daughter who isn’t biologically his, and that is something I will always love and respect him for. We have been through a lot together and only recently got married.
We are very different people. I’m probably the more emotional/talkative one and he is much quieter and more reserved. Historically we could argue, have it out, make up and move on. There was a lot of passion between us and sex was a big part of our relationship.
But over time our arguments have completely changed.
Something relatively small can happen and instead of it staying about that one thing, I feel as though it becomes a judgement on me as a person — that I don’t care, I haven’t thought about him, I’ve prioritised something else, I’m always on my phone/social media etc.
I then become defensive because in my head I’m thinking, “I made a mistake/didn’t think/didn’t realise — why does that have to mean I don’t care about you?”
Then we go round and round.
He feels I don’t listen to what he is actually upset about. I feel he needs me to completely accept his version of events before an argument can end. I want him to acknowledge his part in how things escalate as well, whereas I often feel like the focus becomes what I did wrong and proving why he is right to be upset.
So neither of us feels heard.
One of the biggest differences between us now is sex.
He has openly told me that years ago our arguments could be short and fiery and then we would reconnect sexually. We had a very spontaneous sex life — sexting, pictures/videos, lingerie, heels, role play etc. He misses that version of us and misses feeling that he was a priority in that way.
I understand why he misses it. I miss parts of us too.
But I don’t work that way anymore.
If we’ve had a horrible argument, I’ve cried, I’m anxious or I feel emotionally disconnected from him, I cannot suddenly switch that off and become sexual. Sex doesn’t reset an argument for me anymore. I need the emotional issue resolved first before I want physical intimacy.
And I think this has created another cycle because he experiences the lack of sex/intimacy as further rejection or evidence that our relationship has changed, while I experience pressure around sex as something that makes me want it even less.
The more unresolved conflict there is, the less emotionally safe/connected I feel.
The less connected I feel, the less I want sex.
The less sex there is, the more rejected he feels.
Then that becomes another issue between us.
I’m also dealing with significant health problems. I’ve already had major surgery this year and I am now due to have a bowel resection on 19 October. I’ve been told to expect around 8–12 weeks of recovery.
That is probably why this is weighing on me so heavily right now.
I’m going into a major operation knowing I’m going to be physically vulnerable and dependent on other people for a while, and instead of just thinking about the operation I’m worrying about what our relationship is going to look like during those weeks.
I don’t expect a perfect husband or a relationship where we never argue. I know I have faults. I can be defensive, I can be distracted, I spend too much time working/online sometimes and I’m sure there are times when he genuinely does feel like he comes second.
But I feel like I’m living with very little room to make a mistake without it becoming something much bigger about how much I care.
Arguments can leave me anxious for hours or days. We can end up texting back and forward, repeating the same points, or barely speaking. I hate unresolved arguments, but trying desperately to resolve them seems to make us go around the same circle again.
And I’m starting to question something I never really questioned before:
Does he actually like and want me as I am now, rather than the version of me/us from years ago?
Because I can’t promise that after everything my body and life have been through I’m suddenly going to become the woman who resolves an argument by putting lingerie on and having sex. Equally, I don’t think it’s fair for me to dismiss the fact that physical intimacy clearly matters enormously to him.
I don’t want this to become “he’s awful, leave him” because that isn’t an accurate picture of our whole relationship. There is 15 years of history, love, children, friendship and genuinely good memories here.
But equally, I don’t want to keep excusing a dynamic just because we’ve been together a long time.
With this operation coming up, I think I’m frightened that taking sex largely off the table while I recover — alongside me being sore, tired, emotional and needing help — is going to magnify everything that is already wrong between us.
For anyone who has been in a long relationship, does this sound like something that can actually be worked through?
And particularly where one person needs emotional closeness to want sex, while the other seems to experience sex as one of the main ways they get that closeness — how do you get out of that loop?
I genuinely don’t know anymore whether we’re two people who love each other but have developed a terrible way of communicating, or whether I’ve reached the point where I’m trying too hard to make something work that no longer works for either of us.

SquirrelSoShiny · 29/09/2026 05:46

He sounds fucking awful OP. 'Broken sex and entertainment appliance' seems to be his view of you. Your mental health is poor because you have had life changing illness and your partner has no compassion for you.

sakura06 · 29/09/2026 05:53

I’m so sorry for you OP. Communicating only through text is strange. The first text is unbelievably tedious. Very self-centred. Asking for sex via text is also gross. I think you should give counselling a go.
I will say though that it sounds like you are dealing with a lot, and that he has very little sympathy.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/09/2026 06:16

Oh @mumtobhoyandghirl he isn't behaving well at all. You've had major health problems, and major surgery, with more surgery next month, and he seems to be obsessing about sex and 'how you used to be'. I've had cancer, however successful your treatment, you are changed forever as a person. Does he not realise that? Of course you're going to feel low, he's being an absolute bell end, not a loving supportive partner at all.

I hope you have lovely friends and family who will care for you post-surgery. I think some therapy for you would help. Sending all my best wishes for your surgery.

MeowDoku · 29/09/2026 06:27

If my husband just sent me a text saying can you suck my cock later, I'd assume his phone had been stolen. How on earth is that how an adult man approaches his partner for sexual interaction?! He's awful

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 29/09/2026 06:33

Is there any reason why your husband can't get to his feet, walk to the room you are in, open his mouth and speak to you?

realdeal7393 · 29/09/2026 06:35

He is abusive, and now you are in the stage of life where you can’t and don’t want to be a sex object, he’s acting out. I despair at men I really do. I am so sorry.

TruffleSlinky · 29/09/2026 06:40

Ok, I agree with pp that seeing those messages makes it clear the relationship is worse than I thought. You could try counselling but your problems are deeper than I realised. It does sound like the reason your mental health is bad is because he is sucking the joy from your life.

DrEllisGrey · 29/09/2026 06:52

You have come across so articulate and self aware and I too thought counselling and / or talking to him (not on text)

But those text messages are not great @mumtobhoyandghirl Can you see it when you read it? or is that normal for him to ask you to suck is cock, and dismiss your mental health?

It is potentially a discussion to say I’m no longer using text to voice our opinions and disagreements. If you want to have things out with me; you talk and more importantly, you also listen. I’m not sure this is the answer though.

itwasntme2019 · 29/09/2026 06:56

Why does he want to constantly message when you’re in the house with each other, why would someone check a message thread when they are in the house together, that’s crazy. He clearly cannot listen to understand. He sounds heartless. It sounds like you’ve been through an awful lot with more to come and all he thinks about is himself. He’s selfish and his ways are causing this anxiety in you. I would maybe seek therapy but for you, no couples counselling. Not because there’s anything wrong with you but so you can get a clearer picture of all this. I know you don’t want people to say he’s awful but he seems like an entitled twat.

Velvian · 29/09/2026 07:00

This us a horrible, mind blowing lying selfish man @mumtobhoyandghirl .

I think you will be much happier alone, than having to live with this manipulative, self-obsessed drain.

Bestfootforward11 · 29/09/2026 07:08

I also initially thought from your first post that maybe there was scope for things to improve but your recent post with the text messages really indicates that you need to leave this relationship. He is just grinding you down, no empathy, no give and all take. He is feeding you a narrative that how you feel and what you need is wrong when of course it isn’t. Your mental health will improve massively if you are out of this relationship. I appreciate that might feel hard. I do think therapy might help to undo what he has been doing to undermine your reality and to give you strength. In answer to your question, I don’t think this is a ‘bad patch’ but rather unacceptable behaviour on his part. Sending you a virtual hug. 🤗

MajorSideEye · 29/09/2026 07:17

Oh dear god! As PPs said I thought maybe couple counselling would help. But no, after reading those texts that is NOT a good man.

I’m sorry OP you are going through such a rough time, but those texts are awful. He’s an abusive man, and now it’s been pointed out to you, I bet you think of other things that you think are normal in this relationship that are just not!!

Ilovelurchers · 29/09/2026 07:27

I am relieved to see that posters are changing their advice now you have posted the messages from him, as everything you have said rings massive alarm bells for me, and I really don't think counselling would be appropriate, or that there is "a good relationship underneath" or any of that.

His texts about how you should be constantly checking the thread and messaging him while in the same house as him are pretty insane to be honest - the degree of control he wants over your every thought is staggering! This is not normal in any way.

I also think your expression of suicidal ideation is very concerning and if it's a serious feeling (even if you wouldn't act on it right now) it's vital you get real life support immediately, as it is not normal to feel like that and shows how desperately bad things have got. For your husband to dismiss those feelings is horrendous on the face of it, so unless there is a back story whereby you say things like that without truly meaning them. (I am not for a minute suggesting that is the case by the way! Just saying it's the only thing that could possibly excuse him).

There is so much to else too. You seem deeply unhappy and rightly so.

One thing I would flag up, is that his text referring to oral sex - sending a message like this is not, in my opinion, always a sign of callous disrespect as some posters have implied. In the context of a mutually enjoyed active sex life, texrs like that can be enjoyable and erotic for some couples. Obviously in this case your husband has MASSIVELY misread the room - deliberately in order to offend and shame you, perhaps - which makes his text horribly unpleasant. But not all men and women who send sexual texts to their partners are abusers.

I honestly think you should be ending this relationship my love. He sounds like a solipsistic wanker incapable of admitting fault, taking pleasure in causing you great emotional pain. I've been there. It only gets worse, usually.... So sorry.

IButtleSir · 29/09/2026 07:28

From your first post, I thought maybe couples counselling would work. From your subsequent posts, absolutely not. Instead of couples' counselling, get some individual counselling to help you leave this relationship. You are NOT the problem here.

IButtleSir · 29/09/2026 07:37

@DiscoElysia and @Ilovelurchers have both hit the nail on the head here:

"However, expecting someone to want to text you constantly and to check your messages constantly is controlling and unreasonable. It's like he doesn't expect you to have room in your head for anything or anyone but him - to be obsessed with him."

"His texts about how you should be constantly checking the thread and messaging him while in the same house as him are pretty insane to be honest - the degree of control he wants over your every thought is staggering! This is not normal in any way."

AnonAnonmystery · 29/09/2026 07:38

@mumtobhoyandghirl it might be hard for you to accept you are in an abusive relationship as you sound strong and successful. However it doesn’t mean you aren’t being abused. There was a high profile case where the victim was a news reader and she had to message her husband at lunchtime to send her money for a sandwich ( he would to do so she couldn’t socialise with co-workers) as well as financially abusing her ( he controlled all her earnings ). And you would never think it looking at her but that’s the thing - no one knows what it’s like at home. I know leave the bastard might be hard in your situation right now but if you come to the realisation you are being abused, you can take steps now to protect yourself and your children.

Wish44 · 29/09/2026 07:39

The only way couples therapy may work is that it will help you to see in black and white what the actual situation is and help you to defend yourself and know the truth.

my ex said some bonkers things in therapy that helped me realise I had to leave.

can you afford counselling for yourself? Some space to talk over these things and find your strength?

sorry he has turned out this way. It’s hard when they are good for years and then you realise that they can only be good when life is easy /going exactly their way.

i was with my ex for 10 years of lovely. Had a baby and then he just changed - he said it was my fault

Flapjak · 29/09/2026 07:41

He sounds emotionally stunted / emotionally intelligent and has not grown in the relationship - I think it sounds quite cold that he expects after an argument that he has tried to hurt you and win, that you are just going to the dress up for him , will he engage in counselling ? Does he only value the relationship if it's on his terms ?

slugjelly · 29/09/2026 08:15

Come to think of it my abusive husband would like to text. It is a kind of control. Most surreal was when he texted me from downstairs, after we’d agreed to divorce, that he wanted to give it another go and could we buy a big house and he’d try anew etc etc. and when I went down he blanked me totally and then had a go at me about a bin. Raving insanity.

MagicUser1 · 29/09/2026 08:25

I originally suggested counselling but I also was concerned about the actual content of these arguments so sadly, I am not surprised to see any of this.

You are using AI to help you articulate your feelings and experience I think? Ehich can be helpful. But AI gets bogged down in trying to say it all and is really just aboht processing ehat you say. What is being missed is the very sinple truth - this man is abusive and controlling. And very unkind.

You dont need couples counselling. If ye was willing to acknowledge his behaviour, some.counselling might work for him. But that seems unlikely. You have been ill. You are ill. You are scared and all he is doing is sending crude messages or hounding you.

You shoukd speak to your doctor, yes. But I thinknpart of that needs to be about not getting support at home and your concerns for how he eill behave post surgery.

formigas · 29/09/2026 19:08

I would have suggested couples counselling until I saw the messages, but I think you need to get counselling for yourself and plan to get out. The "can you suck my cock later" demand is just gross (and guaranteed not to achieve the desired result but that's beside the point).

It sounds as though there were probably always problems but you both used sex to fix (=avoid dealing with) them in the past and you likely had more energy to focus on him. He does sound like a vortex of need and entitlement with no empathy.

You have absolutely been through the mill healthwise and he (and possibly you) underestimate that. And expecting you to be the same person you were years ago is just not realistic, even without all the health stuff.

Are you going to be able to have some outside help or someone who can come and stay when you have your surgery? I'm concerned for you - you're vulnerable anyway because of the surgery but mainly because he's a nasty entitled abuser who seems to view you as a machine.

outerspacepotato · 29/09/2026 19:38

He expects to be your primary focus like he was when you first got together. He makes a big deal out of something as fucking simple as you not answering a message in his allotted timeframe when you were in the shower and makes it about your whole relationship. He expects you to be at his beck and call about everything, including sex. He really thinks anything to do with him should be your first priority, while he sure isn't prioritizing you. He wants you on your back foot and insecure so you'll cater to him. He sounds like a controlling asshole. I don't think you should do marital counseling with him, he sounds like the kind of emotional abuser that would use what you talk about against you.

You've got major abdominal surgery coming up. Your recovery time is going to be long. You're not going to be up for sex for some time and that includes blow jobs. He might try to sabotage your recovery like he's doing to your self esteem. Don't let him do anything sexual with or around your stoma.

He's keeping you off balance about your relationship when he should be giving you 100% support, both emotional and physical.

Get friends or family as backup and possibly some home health visits set up. Good luck.

JayJayj · 29/09/2026 22:12

I really was trying to play neutral, and there is a lot to read in your posts. But those messages are awful. If my husband was constantly checking to see if I had messaged, I’d think he was being controlling. And the “see a therapist not a doctor” what an absolute arse hole. I’m so so sorry. Maybe this is something that can be helped through couples counselling, but it doesn’t seem like he is willing to see anything other than his side.

Thebigarsedbitch · Yesterday 13:54

Frankly OP, I don't know why you haven't killed the cunt! He's being ridiculous if he thinks either of you can ever return to the early years of your relationship now that you have the usual work, children and family responsibilities to juggle, let alone your significant health issues. I'm not surprised your mental health is so poor if these haranguings are a frequent occurrence - you must feel utterly exhausted trying to navigate all of his shit.
If it helps, I went through something similar with my husband who also couldn't accept that these endless circular rows, which he always had to win, made me feel so emotionally unsafe that my vagina simply resealed itself. I actually left because I could no longer cope with arguments where he used my responses and explanations as material for further browbeating. It was only after I left him that I realized how energy-sapping and destructive the relationship had become.

I am so sorry that you are going through this, particularly at a time when you are having to undergo further surgery. Can you agree to put everything on ice until after Christmas so that you can properly concentrate on preparing yourself for your operation and recovery? You simply don't have the bandwidth to deal with anything more at present. Make a couples counselling appointment for the new year, and see how you feel then, but in the meantime he should be doing everything he can to make the next three months as easy and stress free as possible for you so that you can regain your health and strength.

Movingsomeplantsabout · Yesterday 14:12

Relationships grow and change over time. Ideally you grow together with mutual respect and a shared history of the inevitable ups and downs. Dh and I are both at home and often text but to really clear the air over something requires face to face interaction. From the screen shots you’ve posted it looks to me like you’ve matured whilst he’s still stuck at some sort of infantile foot-stamping stage. If he loved and respected you he’d be prioritising your health and thanking his lucky stars that you’ve come through some rotten health scares. He wouldn’t be behaving like some crude 14 year old boy who doesn’t know any better. He’s an immature selfish individual. I wish you all the best for your upcoming op xx
