I don’t know if our marriage is going through a bad patch , or is this just our new normal

I don’t know if my marriage is going through a bad patch or if this has become our normal
I’m posting here because I genuinely need outside opinions. I don’t really want to discuss this with people who know us because obviously they know and love both of us, and I don’t want people taking sides.
My husband and I have been together since 2011, so 15 years. We have a blended family and children together, and there is a lot of good in our relationship. He has been an amazing dad, including to my daughter who isn’t biologically his, and that is something I will always love and respect him for. We have been through a lot together and only recently got married.
We are very different people. I’m probably the more emotional/talkative one and he is much quieter and more reserved. Historically we could argue, have it out, make up and move on. There was a lot of passion between us and sex was a big part of our relationship.
But over time our arguments have completely changed.
Something relatively small can happen and instead of it staying about that one thing, I feel as though it becomes a judgement on me as a person — that I don’t care, I haven’t thought about him, I’ve prioritised something else, I’m always on my phone/social media etc.
I then become defensive because in my head I’m thinking, “I made a mistake/didn’t think/didn’t realise — why does that have to mean I don’t care about you?”
Then we go round and round.
He feels I don’t listen to what he is actually upset about. I feel he needs me to completely accept his version of events before an argument can end. I want him to acknowledge his part in how things escalate as well, whereas I often feel like the focus becomes what I did wrong and proving why he is right to be upset.
So neither of us feels heard.
One of the biggest differences between us now is sex.
He has openly told me that years ago our arguments could be short and fiery and then we would reconnect sexually. We had a very spontaneous sex life — sexting, pictures/videos, lingerie, heels, role play etc. He misses that version of us and misses feeling that he was a priority in that way.
I understand why he misses it. I miss parts of us too.
But I don’t work that way anymore.
If we’ve had a horrible argument, I’ve cried, I’m anxious or I feel emotionally disconnected from him, I cannot suddenly switch that off and become sexual. Sex doesn’t reset an argument for me anymore. I need the emotional issue resolved first before I want physical intimacy.
And I think this has created another cycle because he experiences the lack of sex/intimacy as further rejection or evidence that our relationship has changed, while I experience pressure around sex as something that makes me want it even less.
The more unresolved conflict there is, the less emotionally safe/connected I feel.
The less connected I feel, the less I want sex.
The less sex there is, the more rejected he feels.
Then that becomes another issue between us.
I’m also dealing with significant health problems. I’ve already had major surgery this year and I am now due to have a bowel resection on 19 October. I’ve been told to expect around 8–12 weeks of recovery.
That is probably why this is weighing on me so heavily right now.
I’m going into a major operation knowing I’m going to be physically vulnerable and dependent on other people for a while, and instead of just thinking about the operation I’m worrying about what our relationship is going to look like during those weeks.
I don’t expect a perfect husband or a relationship where we never argue. I know I have faults. I can be defensive, I can be distracted, I spend too much time working/online sometimes and I’m sure there are times when he genuinely does feel like he comes second.
But I feel like I’m living with very little room to make a mistake without it becoming something much bigger about how much I care.
Arguments can leave me anxious for hours or days. We can end up texting back and forward, repeating the same points, or barely speaking. I hate unresolved arguments, but trying desperately to resolve them seems to make us go around the same circle again.
And I’m starting to question something I never really questioned before:
Does he actually like and want me as I am now, rather than the version of me/us from years ago?
Because I can’t promise that after everything my body and life have been through I’m suddenly going to become the woman who resolves an argument by putting lingerie on and having sex. Equally, I don’t think it’s fair for me to dismiss the fact that physical intimacy clearly matters enormously to him.
I don’t want this to become “he’s awful, leave him” because that isn’t an accurate picture of our whole relationship. There is 15 years of history, love, children, friendship and genuinely good memories here.
But equally, I don’t want to keep excusing a dynamic just because we’ve been together a long time.
With this operation coming up, I think I’m frightened that taking sex largely off the table while I recover — alongside me being sore, tired, emotional and needing help — is going to magnify everything that is already wrong between us.
For anyone who has been in a long relationship, does this sound like something that can actually be worked through?
And particularly where one person needs emotional closeness to want sex, while the other seems to experience sex as one of the main ways they get that closeness — how do you get out of that loop?
I genuinely don’t know anymore whether we’re two people who love each other but have developed a terrible way of communicating, or whether I’ve reached the point where I’m trying too hard to make something work that no longer works for either of us.

Today was the start of a new argument our son had said he was wanting to go to a Halloween parade nearby I take the kids to all activities so this week son won’t be at football because David won’t take him. Anyways I sent dates and Infor on the parade to him and link from local council site as they we’re talking about it his reply to me via text was

OP posts:
mumtobhoyandghirl · 23/10/2026 03:51

Me - Click on this link and u can read it x
David - no thanks
David - he doesn’t even have a costume
Me - his Halloween costume arrives tomorrow
David - He’ll need it in good condition for the disco
me - there’s funfair, food festivals and it’s free but you can pay and get seating and hot drinks . I wish I could have churros this was my fav time at Xmas just eating around the stalls x

David - Why you acting like you’re not in bed and can’t move and I don’t have enough to be doing. I’m not like you I try avoid being stressed and doing too much. It’s my responsibility to look after my own mental health, he’s lucky to be going at all.

It’s not his fault it’s fallen on this week but he’s 7 he can be told no I’m not getting myself in a tiz for it, it’s pointless. Same with football Already dreading every second of it

me - Don’t go then, I don’t think I deserved that message . I heard you both speaking about it and sent u it

David - You don’t tell him he can’t go, you don’t say mummies sick sorry maybe another time, you try do everything for him no matter what it costs not matter what else is going on in your life no matter how inconvenient it is, no what what problems it’s going to cause.
He already told me about it after school and I already told him we probably couldn’t go because you’re unwell and can’t be left alone for too long.
Why am I taking time off work to be here if I’m then going to be out for hours on end to deal with a 7 year olds social life

OP posts:
mumtobhoyandghirl · 23/10/2026 03:52

Now I never had any discussion whatsoever with our son to say oh dads taking u because heaven forbid I ever do that I just could hear them speaking about ht as I lay in bed. Because I organise everything I sent the information over and u can see from my text I wasn’t pressuring him into going. I just don’t think anything I say is ever right anymore

Surgery wise this was my update to husband and my wee Nan when I came to

Dr Paterson just came to see me there 🩵

He said the amount of scar tissue and endometriosis behind my bowel was extensive, like really extensive. He said he knew I’d have been in absolute agony every single day because basically all the endometriosis and scar tissue can create their own nerve pathways, which is why I’ve been in so much pain even before surgery.

He explained the extra loop in my bowel is actually quite uncommon but on its own wouldn’t normally be a massive issue, it would just mean I’d take longer to digest food than most people.

However, the section of bowel he’s removed had a growth inside it the size of a GOLF BALL 😳 They biopsy everything they’ve removed so I’ll need to wait on those results, but he said that alone would have been causing so many issues. It could have caused a blockage, the pain, bleeding from my back passage and constantly feeling full.

He also explained how it could have been affecting my body and contributing to why I’ve struggled so much with losing weight, something to do with toxins and everything going on inside my bowel.

He said the surgery was successful and although this part of recovery is going to be absolutely horrible, after seeing everything he removed he’s 100% confident it was the right thing to do and absolutely needed done.

He’s also going to put me on some sort of spray that I take to try and prevent the endometriosis coming back, as well as replacing hormones I’m low in. I’ll find out more about that.

He actually said he only had me in surgery yesterday because of how big the operation was and he’s not even working today, but he knew how much pain I’d be in so wanted to come and check on me himself.

He also deliberately didn’t want to tell me all of this yesterday when I was still out of it with the anaesthetic, so waited until today when I’d be able to properly understand everything.

It’s actually crazy hearing just how bad everything was inside me. He went into it all in more detail of what I’ve text ,I knew I was in pain every day but hearing him explain why and how much was actually wrong with me is a lot to take in.

I’m just so glad it’s done and he’s happy with how surgery went. Just need to get through this recovery now 🩵

Ineffable23 · 23/10/2026 04:28

I'm glad the surgery was successful, though sorry to hear you're in such pain. The surgeon sounds very dedicated, I'm glad they took such care of you.

Obviously now isn't the time to be taking action, but maybe while you're bedbound you can take the opportunity to have a really good think about your options next, because your partner sounds like they're really horrible, frankly.

GarlicEverything · 23/10/2026 04:49

Oh, @mumtobhoyandghirl mate, I'm so sorry you've been suffering all this for so long with so little compassionate support Flowers The surgeon sounds like a star, even though he's left you with a painfully chopped-up bowel!

David's a self-centred cunt, isn't he.

Do you have other people looking after you? It's so difficult with kids, they need looking after as well, but your own recovery is PRIORITY for now. I'm assuming the school's been kept up to date so they can offer supportive services as needed (and be a bit flexible if needed).

Wishing you good pain relief, plenty of rest and all the help you need.

Membrill0 · 23/10/2026 05:22

So sorry to learn just how much you’ve been suffering. No matter how much you stress this to David, I don’t think he has the ability to care about others, either you or your son. He has every excuse possible to be MIA (turned round on you so you feel guilty) and will continue to drag you all down.
Life with him is joyless.
As soon as you’re well enough, plan your exit. Make it your goal for a better and brighter future which you and your son deserve.

AnonAnonmystery · 23/10/2026 06:23

It’s really good to hear from you and that the operation went well. Every day leading up to the operation and way before, you must have been in so much pain and you had that bastard on your head and in your ear with his awful demands and comments. Abdominal surgery like yours is very tough pain wise, keep on top of the painkillers. Will you have any family or friends popppinh in to see you or will this further enrage the 👺
m
i had a think about this - part of his abuse comes from him being a narcissist ( not an excuse but a common character trait for abusers, I know as I was married to one too; it always has to be about them - they get jealous of your dc, and contact you have and then gaslight the hell out of you,

I know it’s tough if your son can’t go to his parade but for now try and avoid conflict with him as he’s not a normal person and will no doubt be sending more appalling messages to you. Maybe a school mum can help? I know it’s really tough in all of you. When there is abuse, it trickles down to the children sadly.

lifeonourplanet · 23/10/2026 07:53

That sounds incredibly tough OP. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Do you have anyone to help you?
David really is a twat. Sex pest is an understatement. He's abusive.

Bestfootforward11 · 23/10/2026 08:20

I’m so sorry you’re in pain and wishing you a swift recovery. I hope you’re able to take the time you need to heal physically. Even when unwell, you are thinking about your child.
Your partner just has himself at the centre of everything. Any kind of effort (unless for something that is for him no doubt) is an unrequired demand. I’d say for now to try avoid conflict (as much as is possible)so all your energies can go into your recovery rather than dealing with this fool. A brighter future awaits you- without him in it.

Boobyslims · 23/10/2026 14:06

Great to hear you’ve had successful surgery. Now, time to heal successfully.

he nothing to add re David the dick. My god.

outerspacepotato · 23/10/2026 14:16

I'm glad to hear your surgery went well. I hope you have some support from family and friends to help you out a bit.

There's just no upside to your husband.

AnonAnonmystery · 23/10/2026 14:25

Actually op, the avoiding conflict advice from me was a bit daft as with abusers, everything sets them off. You could make a perfectly reasonable request but it will still be twisted and turned so he can send another abusive text to you. So sorry, I hope I haven’t offended you. I should know you are walking on egg shells around him. Take care and hope you get better every day :)

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 23/10/2026 14:49

well, i was going to ask you to consider why you keep making little mistakes that cause problems (your own words).

even the first long text, as needy as it looked, i could maybe understand some frustration if that was how you generally communicated in a house filled with children.

then i saw the "can you suck my cock later" text

jesus fucking christ. do people really ask stuff like that?

it's just so grotesquely and nakedly self-centred.

no care, no mutuality, no consideration.
just "i've got this itch i need you to scratch".

grim.

i think you should genuinely consider whether your relationship is in fact an abusive one.

grinandslothit · 23/10/2026 17:49

It's good to hear you're update and that the surgery was a success. it sounds like you had a very capable and caring surgeon. I hope you are able to get a lot of rest so you can heal Flowers

Crikeyalmighty · 23/10/2026 20:55

mumtobhoyandghirl · 19/10/2026 00:00

I’ve live with this extreme sexual demands for 15 years which in the last 7 years has became a weekly argument now . I genuinely thought before I wrote in here or created this post I was a huge part of the issue because I have no libido, I’m menopausal and have some trauma over pain with gynae and I’m just less fun and sexy. Like last night for example I knew he wanted sex which we were intimate but prior he put his hand around my arm and said I’m too skinny, I asked if he still liked my body (I’ve lost a lot of weight due to health and pain) and he said he doesn’t dislike it but I’m skinny and then in same breath he wants me then to dress up heels on sext ect without realising the impact comments like that will have on me and confidence. Today we were up early sons football tournament and when we got home I was steaming uniform ect sorting it all as I leave at 6am tomorrow and he’s texting from in the bath sexting like do u think we could have sex at like 5.45am I brushed it off and said this is the first surgery where I am really nervous like I feel my heart beating out my chest and I’ll copy and paste his reply

Says oral sex close to the surgery is absolutely fine medically and can act as a distraction for patients who are nervous,
Say to really focus on deep throat and making sure you’re swallowing all the cum, being so concentrated on these things is a welcome distraction x

I replied lol and he said “is that all I’m getting?” And then went in a huff I then tried to like win him over because I just don’t need to be worrying about him hating me and being off before surgery and he replies this

You not think your last day before surgery should be spent in that black g sting and heels and absolutely nothing else? You not think you should be making some content for me Taking dick, sucking dick, who knows when you’ll next get the chance

Lovely - I would be more concerned for your sanity if you did have a libido with this utter unpleasant pig - please take it easy and as soon as you feel up to it check into what you need to do to make getting away from this man a reality . My H has his faults but woukd have been going out his way to make sure I felt looked after and looking after our son too and doing things that made you happy - that’s the norm -it’s a cliche I know but you sound so lovely and deserve way better than this in life!!

Crikeyalmighty · 23/10/2026 21:10

Just read the long text you posted - I’m sorry but I think his main attraction to you was sex on tap and the fact you had that connection - what he doesn’t get at all is this version of him isn’t one that makes you feel sexually interested and yes you have other things going on besides servicing his dick - being unwell to this level tends to not exactly make you feel sexy - if he can’t support you at this time without his main concern being his sex life then I think you do need to tell him that you don’t feel the same sexually and end it - a guy like this isn’t going to put up with a lack of sex for long long periods - he will just find it somewhere else I feel

Hummingbird233 · 23/10/2026 21:32

I hope your recovery is going to plan.

David is a nasty, self absorbed, repetitive, boring, immature, prick. Believe me when I say that most women would have chucked him out a long time ago. He has zero communication skills and sounds like an overgrown 15 year old. Certainly not someone the average person would want to settle down with.

Im wondering if your previous experience of relationships, either your own or your parents, were so poor that you don’t recognise this. Perhaps it’s not as bad as relationships you’ve had or seen before.

But it’s pretty awful OP, he’s horrid. I can’t imagine being so crude and vulgar to anyone, let alone whilst they’re stressed in the run up to an operation.

Stop hiding for him. People need to know what you’re living with. No wonder you feel bloody depressed, seriously. If you left him, a massive weight would be lifted.

outerspacepotato · 23/10/2026 23:28

Says oral sex close to the surgery is absolutely fine medically

Um. Is David a surgeon?

What a fucking dumbass.

Were you not NPO for bowel surgery? Your partner could have cost you your life. You'd better think long and hard about staying with someone who would risk your life pre-op to service his dick.

mafiacat · Yesterday 00:29

What an absolute twat David is. I hate him.

mafiacat · Yesterday 00:29

I hope you can find a peaceful life away from him OP. I don't know how you've survived this long with someone so miserable, sex obsessed, dehumanising, and abusive.

size18 · Yesterday 12:44

Phew, he is an absolute dick and treating you as a sex doll, no wonder your mental health is struggling
posting these not because my (casual) relationship is perfect but this was before and after my endo surgery (8hrs with bowel surgeon and endo specialist) . In case it helps to see a different perspective/man/can’t think of the right word! Sometimes you get lost in what you’ve always had and don’t see what life can be like

I don’t know if our marriage is going through a bad patch , or is this just our new normal

@Hummingbird233Im not a woe as me type of person never have been at all. But your message genuinely has me thinking as does all of the replies of outrage . My mum had me aged 20 my dad left her so no father in my life. I have no siblings and no connection to my fathers side I’m non existent to them. My mums mum and dad ended up raising me I lived with my own mum until 17 then had to make a decision to go to uni or just move out live alone and get a full time job . Prior to moving out many nights from age 13-17 when I was old enough to see and witness how abusive my mum was I’d flee to my nans and stay for weeks on end until I was dragged back home for “lying” about her being an alcoholic about her anorexia and calling me an embarrassment for being over weight, stealing money out my birthday cards , then getting engaged to another alcoholic when I was 13 who was so inappropriate always I woke up to him sleeping in my bed, when I shot up told my mum I was wrong dramatic & almost devil like for expressing how it made me feel . he used to lie about stupid things to get me into trouble then I’d argue then I’d be grounded and he’d smirk as my mum walked away. She’s told me she never wanted me doesn’t love me over and over again and I only cut all ties 3 years ago when she started treating my daughter the same way and I absolutely will not have any of my children deal with this. I don’t drink infront of them tbh I rarely drink it scares me watching people’s behaviour change. My papa was my whole world and 6 months after having my daughter I was 21 he had a massive heart attack and died infront of me and my mum blamed me for not saving him (paramedics couldn’t save him) but I got messages so repulsive about how it was my fault about how no one loves me and any time I’d cut contact she pretend to commit suicide or fake overdoses and then plaster on socials that I’m the reason she wants to kill herself. I’ve never ever went back to speaking to her at all but now you’ve said to me I think possible my childhood has a lot to do with my own self worth x
