I don’t know if our marriage is going through a bad patch , or is this just our new normal

I don’t know if my marriage is going through a bad patch or if this has become our normal
I’m posting here because I genuinely need outside opinions. I don’t really want to discuss this with people who know us because obviously they know and love both of us, and I don’t want people taking sides.
My husband and I have been together since 2011, so 15 years. We have a blended family and children together, and there is a lot of good in our relationship. He has been an amazing dad, including to my daughter who isn’t biologically his, and that is something I will always love and respect him for. We have been through a lot together and only recently got married.
We are very different people. I’m probably the more emotional/talkative one and he is much quieter and more reserved. Historically we could argue, have it out, make up and move on. There was a lot of passion between us and sex was a big part of our relationship.
But over time our arguments have completely changed.
Something relatively small can happen and instead of it staying about that one thing, I feel as though it becomes a judgement on me as a person — that I don’t care, I haven’t thought about him, I’ve prioritised something else, I’m always on my phone/social media etc.
I then become defensive because in my head I’m thinking, “I made a mistake/didn’t think/didn’t realise — why does that have to mean I don’t care about you?”
Then we go round and round.
He feels I don’t listen to what he is actually upset about. I feel he needs me to completely accept his version of events before an argument can end. I want him to acknowledge his part in how things escalate as well, whereas I often feel like the focus becomes what I did wrong and proving why he is right to be upset.
So neither of us feels heard.
One of the biggest differences between us now is sex.
He has openly told me that years ago our arguments could be short and fiery and then we would reconnect sexually. We had a very spontaneous sex life — sexting, pictures/videos, lingerie, heels, role play etc. He misses that version of us and misses feeling that he was a priority in that way.
I understand why he misses it. I miss parts of us too.
But I don’t work that way anymore.
If we’ve had a horrible argument, I’ve cried, I’m anxious or I feel emotionally disconnected from him, I cannot suddenly switch that off and become sexual. Sex doesn’t reset an argument for me anymore. I need the emotional issue resolved first before I want physical intimacy.
And I think this has created another cycle because he experiences the lack of sex/intimacy as further rejection or evidence that our relationship has changed, while I experience pressure around sex as something that makes me want it even less.
The more unresolved conflict there is, the less emotionally safe/connected I feel.
The less connected I feel, the less I want sex.
The less sex there is, the more rejected he feels.
Then that becomes another issue between us.
I’m also dealing with significant health problems. I’ve already had major surgery this year and I am now due to have a bowel resection on 19 October. I’ve been told to expect around 8–12 weeks of recovery.
That is probably why this is weighing on me so heavily right now.
I’m going into a major operation knowing I’m going to be physically vulnerable and dependent on other people for a while, and instead of just thinking about the operation I’m worrying about what our relationship is going to look like during those weeks.
I don’t expect a perfect husband or a relationship where we never argue. I know I have faults. I can be defensive, I can be distracted, I spend too much time working/online sometimes and I’m sure there are times when he genuinely does feel like he comes second.
But I feel like I’m living with very little room to make a mistake without it becoming something much bigger about how much I care.
Arguments can leave me anxious for hours or days. We can end up texting back and forward, repeating the same points, or barely speaking. I hate unresolved arguments, but trying desperately to resolve them seems to make us go around the same circle again.
And I’m starting to question something I never really questioned before:
Does he actually like and want me as I am now, rather than the version of me/us from years ago?
Because I can’t promise that after everything my body and life have been through I’m suddenly going to become the woman who resolves an argument by putting lingerie on and having sex. Equally, I don’t think it’s fair for me to dismiss the fact that physical intimacy clearly matters enormously to him.
I don’t want this to become “he’s awful, leave him” because that isn’t an accurate picture of our whole relationship. There is 15 years of history, love, children, friendship and genuinely good memories here.
But equally, I don’t want to keep excusing a dynamic just because we’ve been together a long time.
With this operation coming up, I think I’m frightened that taking sex largely off the table while I recover — alongside me being sore, tired, emotional and needing help — is going to magnify everything that is already wrong between us.
For anyone who has been in a long relationship, does this sound like something that can actually be worked through?
And particularly where one person needs emotional closeness to want sex, while the other seems to experience sex as one of the main ways they get that closeness — how do you get out of that loop?
I genuinely don’t know anymore whether we’re two people who love each other but have developed a terrible way of communicating, or whether I’ve reached the point where I’m trying too hard to make something work that no longer works for either of us.

OMG all this man cares about is sex. Will you have any other support after surgery? This is not normal. If my husband sent me texts like that I would never have sex with him again. He has zero empathy and doesn’t seem to care about you and resents anyone or anything which takes your attention away. Clearly your focus for now needs to be recovering after surgery but lining up safe people to help you is a good idea. I hope the surgery goes well but it looks like whatever your relationship was built on in the past involved you massaging this guys ego and being available for sex whenever. Without emotional connection, for most women (and men to an extent) sex is less appealing. I hope your surgery goes well.

blinkingpeck · 17/10/2026 06:45

I’m so sorry OP, but you will never be happy while you stay with this man and I think you know that. Leaving is hard but you will be free of this emotionally stunted, self-obsessed, sex-mad excuse for a man and life will become wonderful again. Sending hugs.

Left · 17/10/2026 13:14

He’s a bit of a bellend.

Good luck for Mondays Op! Have you got anyone else who can be supportive?

cartagenagina · 18/10/2026 16:43

Good luck with your operation.

Your DH comes across as a revolting sex pest. His wife is having bowel surgery and all he cares about is his dick.

When you have recovered please reflect on how you want to spend the rest of your life. 💐

Membrill0 · 18/10/2026 18:15

“Your body will be fucked” - over and over again. He just sees you as a body, a physical object to be used to satisfy his sexual needs. As a person you don’t exist in his mind.
He’s completely heartless.
Constantly demanding sex, blaming you, begrudging the time you spend with others, whining - it’s all off-putting. If only he thought with the organ above his torso and not the one at the bottom.

I do agree with him though. He is an inconvenience. He’s a millstone round your neck and inhibits your life.

Good luck for tomorrow. Get well and get rid of him asap.

mumtobhoyandghirl · 19/10/2026 00:00

I’ve live with this extreme sexual demands for 15 years which in the last 7 years has became a weekly argument now . I genuinely thought before I wrote in here or created this post I was a huge part of the issue because I have no libido, I’m menopausal and have some trauma over pain with gynae and I’m just less fun and sexy. Like last night for example I knew he wanted sex which we were intimate but prior he put his hand around my arm and said I’m too skinny, I asked if he still liked my body (I’ve lost a lot of weight due to health and pain) and he said he doesn’t dislike it but I’m skinny and then in same breath he wants me then to dress up heels on sext ect without realising the impact comments like that will have on me and confidence. Today we were up early sons football tournament and when we got home I was steaming uniform ect sorting it all as I leave at 6am tomorrow and he’s texting from in the bath sexting like do u think we could have sex at like 5.45am I brushed it off and said this is the first surgery where I am really nervous like I feel my heart beating out my chest and I’ll copy and paste his reply

Says oral sex close to the surgery is absolutely fine medically and can act as a distraction for patients who are nervous,
Say to really focus on deep throat and making sure you’re swallowing all the cum, being so concentrated on these things is a welcome distraction x

I replied lol and he said “is that all I’m getting?” And then went in a huff I then tried to like win him over because I just don’t need to be worrying about him hating me and being off before surgery and he replies this

You not think your last day before surgery should be spent in that black g sting and heels and absolutely nothing else? You not think you should be making some content for me Taking dick, sucking dick, who knows when you’ll next get the chance

No words can convey how bad this is for you.

Thebigarsedbitch · 19/10/2026 00:31

I'm so sorry you are going through this OP, especially at a time when he should be doing everything that he can to make you feel rested, relaxed and confident that you will be properly looked after when you come home from hospital. Will you have people to support you when you get home?

I think you need to make it clear to hospital staff that your husband is likely to be completely useless in terms of helping your recovery and will also be pestering you for sex the minute you are discharged.

Do whatever you can to get through the next few months ( that doesn't include satisfying his extreme sexual fetishes) and as soon as you feel well enough, take the necessary steps to free yourself of this despicable pig so that you can concentrate on optimizing your own mental and physical health.

In the meantime prioritize yourself and your recovery. I hope everything goes well tomorrow and send you love and hugs.

mumtobhoyandghirl · 19/10/2026 00:51

@Thebigarsedbitch I really appreciate this message x

A healthy relationship is one where you feel cherished and respected. I think time has normalised his behaviours to you but they are actually repugnant ways to speak to you at any time, and appalling whilst waiting for surgery.

You deserve peace and gentleness in your life. Really, you do.

grinandslothit · 19/10/2026 01:47

Best wishes with your surgery. I hope it goes well for you and you're able to get some rest and recover Flowers

GarlicEverything · 19/10/2026 02:18

You'll probably be out of surgery when you read this. I hope it went well and you're being cared for.

At the start of your thread, I thought you'd be good candidates for relationship counselling because you had such clarity on the differences between you. As it went on, though, his utter lack of concern for - and interest in - you as a person became obvious. I don't know whether he's always been this obsessed with his dick and how he feels you should service it, but his messages just before your operation are atrocious. You've told him you're scared and all he's got to offer is strict instructions on a blow job!

It's really clear he doesn't care about you, he sees you as a malfunctioning sex appliance. I'm so sorry. You most certainly deserve better Flowers

How long will you be in hospital? I hope you'll use some of the time to contact tel:08082000247 Women's Aid, initially just for a talk. Consider asking for mental health support while you're in, too.

mafiacat · 19/10/2026 03:33

@mumtobhoyandghirl

I hope that your surgery went well.

I felt so sad reading those texts from him. I've been in an abusive, coercive control relationship (it took me 6 months and 8 attempts to leave) and reading his words reminds me so much of what I went through. This is not a good man. I know you want him to be one. Maybe he used to be better. But he is not good to you now.

He is using you for sex. He evidently does not care about your health or your wellbeing. He has no interest in reaching an agreement in your argument - he only wants to wear you down. I recommend reading Lundy Bancroft's book "Why does he do that?"

He is not confused. He is not trying to create harmony or agreement or consensus. He is picking fights to control you and get sex.

He is an emotional abuser.

If you leave him, your health and mental health should improve. I'm sorry, I know it isn't what you wanted to hear.

SparkleHorse82 · 19/10/2026 04:22

If you’re having surgery in an NHS hospital please use the opportunity to speak to nursing staff and let them know you’re facing abuse. They will be able to point you towards resources to help you leave. You know you have to leave. You need to find calm and peace away from this man.

JayJayj · 19/10/2026 05:37

He is very abusive. And coercive. None of this is ok. I really do hope your surgery goes well.
and please please try and confide in someone close to you.

speakball · 19/10/2026 06:00

op i’m here with good news. you’re waking up my love. you’re on the right track. things are going to be so much better for you in the future. for now one foot in front of the other until this unkind man is out of your life.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 19/10/2026 06:25

I hate David. I hope his cock falls off.

Boobyslims · 19/10/2026 06:32

OP I hope your surgery goes well. We are all rooting for you xxx

AnonAnonmystery · 19/10/2026 06:38

Another one wishing you well today and rooting for you. I hope you are in good care today. Please do try confide in someone in real life and also while you at in hospital ( nurse / doctor).

Bestfootforward11 · 19/10/2026 08:12

Wishing you well, I hope the surgery goes ok. I am so sorry, you deserve much better than this cruel and selfish man. You will need time to recover from the op, then I think you know what you must do xxxx

IButtleSir · 19/10/2026 08:50

I am so, so sorry that you have such a vile excuse for a human being as a husband. It's abundantly clear from his messages that he doesn't see you as a person, merely as a sex toy. This is not normal. You deserve so much better than this. I really hope starting this thread has been the wake-up call you need to get him out of your life.

ProfessorInkling · 19/10/2026 09:02

Wishing you a good recovery from your surgery OP. I’m so sorry you weren’t made to feel safe and looked after before going in to hospital for this. Focus on your health and take the time you need to heal but please use MN for support when you are ready.

blinkingpeck · 21/10/2026 09:05

I’ve been thinking of you OP and hope you are ok. We all have your back.

Boobyslims · 22/10/2026 19:14

OP, how are you doing? Thinking of you.
