I don’t know if our marriage is going through a bad patch , or is this just our new normal

I don’t know if my marriage is going through a bad patch or if this has become our normal
I’m posting here because I genuinely need outside opinions. I don’t really want to discuss this with people who know us because obviously they know and love both of us, and I don’t want people taking sides.
My husband and I have been together since 2011, so 15 years. We have a blended family and children together, and there is a lot of good in our relationship. He has been an amazing dad, including to my daughter who isn’t biologically his, and that is something I will always love and respect him for. We have been through a lot together and only recently got married.
We are very different people. I’m probably the more emotional/talkative one and he is much quieter and more reserved. Historically we could argue, have it out, make up and move on. There was a lot of passion between us and sex was a big part of our relationship.
But over time our arguments have completely changed.
Something relatively small can happen and instead of it staying about that one thing, I feel as though it becomes a judgement on me as a person — that I don’t care, I haven’t thought about him, I’ve prioritised something else, I’m always on my phone/social media etc.
I then become defensive because in my head I’m thinking, “I made a mistake/didn’t think/didn’t realise — why does that have to mean I don’t care about you?”
Then we go round and round.
He feels I don’t listen to what he is actually upset about. I feel he needs me to completely accept his version of events before an argument can end. I want him to acknowledge his part in how things escalate as well, whereas I often feel like the focus becomes what I did wrong and proving why he is right to be upset.
So neither of us feels heard.
One of the biggest differences between us now is sex.
He has openly told me that years ago our arguments could be short and fiery and then we would reconnect sexually. We had a very spontaneous sex life — sexting, pictures/videos, lingerie, heels, role play etc. He misses that version of us and misses feeling that he was a priority in that way.
I understand why he misses it. I miss parts of us too.
But I don’t work that way anymore.
If we’ve had a horrible argument, I’ve cried, I’m anxious or I feel emotionally disconnected from him, I cannot suddenly switch that off and become sexual. Sex doesn’t reset an argument for me anymore. I need the emotional issue resolved first before I want physical intimacy.
And I think this has created another cycle because he experiences the lack of sex/intimacy as further rejection or evidence that our relationship has changed, while I experience pressure around sex as something that makes me want it even less.
The more unresolved conflict there is, the less emotionally safe/connected I feel.
The less connected I feel, the less I want sex.
The less sex there is, the more rejected he feels.
Then that becomes another issue between us.
I’m also dealing with significant health problems. I’ve already had major surgery this year and I am now due to have a bowel resection on 19 October. I’ve been told to expect around 8–12 weeks of recovery.
That is probably why this is weighing on me so heavily right now.
I’m going into a major operation knowing I’m going to be physically vulnerable and dependent on other people for a while, and instead of just thinking about the operation I’m worrying about what our relationship is going to look like during those weeks.
I don’t expect a perfect husband or a relationship where we never argue. I know I have faults. I can be defensive, I can be distracted, I spend too much time working/online sometimes and I’m sure there are times when he genuinely does feel like he comes second.
But I feel like I’m living with very little room to make a mistake without it becoming something much bigger about how much I care.
Arguments can leave me anxious for hours or days. We can end up texting back and forward, repeating the same points, or barely speaking. I hate unresolved arguments, but trying desperately to resolve them seems to make us go around the same circle again.
And I’m starting to question something I never really questioned before:
Does he actually like and want me as I am now, rather than the version of me/us from years ago?
Because I can’t promise that after everything my body and life have been through I’m suddenly going to become the woman who resolves an argument by putting lingerie on and having sex. Equally, I don’t think it’s fair for me to dismiss the fact that physical intimacy clearly matters enormously to him.
I don’t want this to become “he’s awful, leave him” because that isn’t an accurate picture of our whole relationship. There is 15 years of history, love, children, friendship and genuinely good memories here.
But equally, I don’t want to keep excusing a dynamic just because we’ve been together a long time.
With this operation coming up, I think I’m frightened that taking sex largely off the table while I recover — alongside me being sore, tired, emotional and needing help — is going to magnify everything that is already wrong between us.
For anyone who has been in a long relationship, does this sound like something that can actually be worked through?
And particularly where one person needs emotional closeness to want sex, while the other seems to experience sex as one of the main ways they get that closeness — how do you get out of that loop?
I genuinely don’t know anymore whether we’re two people who love each other but have developed a terrible way of communicating, or whether I’ve reached the point where I’m trying too hard to make something work that no longer works for either of us.

@Hummingbird233Im not a woe as me type of person never have been at all. But your message genuinely has me thinking as does all of the replies of outrage . My mum had me aged 20 my dad left her so no father in my life. I have no siblings and no connection to my fathers side I’m non existent to them. My mums mum and dad ended up raising me I lived with my own mum until 17 then had to make a decision to go to uni or just move out live alone and get a full time job . Prior to moving out many nights from age 13-17 when I was old enough to see and witness how abusive my mum was I’d flee to my nans and stay for weeks on end until I was dragged back home for “lying” about her being an alcoholic about her anorexia and calling me an embarrassment for being over weight, stealing money out my birthday cards , then getting engaged to another alcoholic when I was 13 who was so inappropriate always I woke up to him sleeping in my bed, when I shot up told my mum I was wrong dramatic & almost devil like for expressing how it made me feel . he used to lie about stupid things to get me into trouble then I’d argue then I’d be grounded and he’d smirk as my mum walked away. She’s told me she never wanted me doesn’t love me over and over again and I only cut all ties 3 years ago when she started treating my daughter the same way and I absolutely will not have any of my children deal with this. I don’t drink infront of them tbh I rarely drink it scares me watching people’s behaviour change. My papa was my whole world and 6 months after having my daughter I was 21 he had a massive heart attack and died infront of me and my mum blamed me for not saving him (paramedics couldn’t save him) but I got messages so repulsive about how it was my fault about how no one loves me and any time I’d cut contact she pretend to commit suicide or fake overdoses and then plaster on socials that I’m the reason she wants to kill herself. I’ve never ever went back to speaking to her at all but now you’ve said to me I think possible my childhood has a lot to do with my own self worth x

You’ve had a terrible time of it. Is therapy an option for you?

mumtobhoyandghirl · Yesterday 01:16

@moderate I’ve never tried therapy I think post surgery healing I should look at this tbh , because just writing that down and comparing even my own children’s upbringings, while I’m sure there’s mistakes I’ve made I know 100% my kids feel and know they’re loved . And the stuff I listed was minimal I wouldn’t have time to say everything I don’t even know if I’d remember everything if that makes sense

I was chatting to my daughter just about sexual health and it was a conversation she brought up because she’s not had a boyfriend and not sexually active coming up for 18 and was asking if there was pressure when I was young ect as now it’s more common for many people to not be active .

and we were talking about safety and feeling safe and I’m very open now due to her age about my childhood and I remembered out of no where that when I was 14 my mum had a works night out I was home alone at 3am brought everyone back to ours and put a guy from work in my room to sleep on floor . I was pretending I was asleep and he tried it on with me touching me and I just laid there asleep . Next day I had to have breakfast with him and others and he said infront of me to my mum “ I never tried it on at all with your daughter” now if that’s not a red flag I don’t know what is and my mums reply was don’t be stupid I know u wouldn’t x

@mumtobhoyandghirl your latest updates are heart breaking, it feels like you were robbed of a childhood and your mums alcoholism is no excuse - she was abusive and still is, just like your husband. She put you into dangerous positions and did not act like a mother at all. Thank god for your grandparents. It’s good you cut her off. Next one is your husband ( no pressure) but I do hope that for you. It explains his behaviour , he has no fear that you have family back up and a strong support nextwork.
It seems that @Hummingbird233 has hit the nail on the head. Sometimes these threads are a form of therapy in itself with mindful insights from others. It helps when you write things down as it clarifies things for you. I think reflecting on myself, now that I am out of my marriage, which was abusive, I have really firm boundaries in my current relationship. I have told my partner that if he ever crosses the line in certain areas it will be an instant end to the relationship. He knows I’m 100% serious. You don’t realise until you start talking to others and get out, how bad the situation is. So sadly there is no family to visit you, I am very sorry :( I am glad you have kept posting as I think it’s helping you, giving you a voice and also allowing you to explore your situation.

I do hope you are feeling a bit better? Is he leaving you alone at least? I still feel really disturbed he was asking for sex a few hours before your op. Also your dd is 18, how is he expecting you to dress up sexy and do all sorts when you have 2 dc at home?

You poor thing. I wonder if the neglect and abuse you suffered with your mum has become your benchmark, so anything that isn’t as bad as that seems ok and manageable in your mind.

You deserve so much better.

David isn’t caring for you. He isn’t concerned with the impact of his behaviour and words, which shows that he isn’t capable of a loving relationship. You don’t need to put up with it.

You don’t need to look after everyone else all the time, making it smooth and feel ok. You don’t have to tread on eggshells to satisfy David or hide his abuse to make your kids and those around you feel safe. It isn’t always your job.

David is a negative stain in your family and it would be far easier to tell him to do one, than to keep this charade up forever. On the one hand, trying to teach your child boundaries, when on the other hand, you’re allowing your own to be so exploited. David is bad news and you’d find life so much easier without managing and putting up with him.
