Is a 10-night lads holiday too soon with a 3-month-old?

Hi just looking for peoples opinions on this. Interested in hearing both a female and males opinion as my partner doesn’t seem to think he’s doing anything wrong. We’ve just welcomed our second baby. Our eldest is 3 and youngest is now 3 weeks. My partner has just booked a lads holiday to the Caribbean in December for 10 nights. Baby will have only just turned 3 months old then. I can’t help but think it’s too soon for him to be going for such a length of time but he seems to think it’s fine. Wondering what other people’s opinions are? Am I overreacting?

10 days!!! No way , that’s so selfish of him

ClairDeLaLune · 30/09/2026 09:28

Too soon. Too long. Too expensive. Too far away. He’s a total twat OP.

ClairDeLaLune · 30/09/2026 09:28

I forgot - too selfish.

LowlandLucky · 30/09/2026 09:32

You have a husband that still thinks he is single. You are nothing more than a housekeeper and nanny. Any decent family man wouldn't even consider a 10 night holiday away never mind when his darling wife has just given birth to their second child. He didn't even have the decency to discuss it, he just booked it! Can't you see he has no respect for you at all ?

FucksGivenZero · 30/09/2026 09:53

I hesitate to write this as I really don't want you to feel any worse than you already do but my advice would be to start getting your ducks in a row OP. Your situation is almost certainly not going to improve. In fact, I'd wager it's going to get a whole lot worse. Seek legal advice re separation ASAP. I think you need to start planning for a life without him and jump ship as soon as you can.

StripedTee · 30/09/2026 09:56

That's really awful of him.

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 30/09/2026 09:56

WHAT?! That's insane and off-the-scale selfish. When you choose to become a parent, your life changes. He needs to grow up and accept that.

Underconstruction · 30/09/2026 09:57

I'd say he's lucky you've put up with him long enough to have a 3-year old and if his friends think it's ok for him to be going along with them then it's really no surprise they're single.

I don't know if I'd go quite this far, but I did have the same sort of inkling... If you are making any decisions about going back to work etc, I'd definitely go back and keep building your own source of income - this is an amber flag that he might not be fully in this for the long haul.

Kalanthe · 30/09/2026 09:59

He's absolutely lost his mind. 10 days with lads while you're home alone all this time with a 3 year old and a tiny baby?? Nobody normal would suggest this, he's either a narcissist or a manchild

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 30/09/2026 10:01

Is there any info missing here? Eg - are you super rich with a live in nanny? Or do you have grandparents who do a parent-sized share of the childcare? None of that would actually make 10 days acceptable in my opinion, but I'm just trying to understand why he or his family could possibly think this is an option...

What a shame he has used up to 10 days of an annual leave budget for selfish reasons. Hope he has enough AL left to cover all days children are ill and can’t go to childcare!

Cherrycoko · 30/09/2026 10:14

I'm all for parents having a life outside parenthood, but ten nights!? That is a little steep, both financially and in terms of leaving you to get on with it.

To add some context - he’s going with 2 friends who both have no partners or children, he is still trying to act like one of the lads when he’s not anymore, he has a family to support. Also this holiday has been booked since the birth of our second child (couple weeks ago), not something that has been planned far in advance. He’s asked for my permission before booking - I said I was not happy about it but what can I do. I have learnt with him that even if I was to say I don’t want him to go it would not change his opinion. He’s been away several times before before the birth of our second child, however the trips were a lot shorter (4 days max) and even then I wasn’t impressed. His family however seem to think it’s a great idea! Mine not so much!

If his family think it's such a great idea, will they then be stepping in to help you out while he's away?

MajorProcrastination · 30/09/2026 10:31

Oof.

You've mentioned that he's asked permission which puts the pressure on you to be the bad guy if you say no. You are not his keeper and he should have the maturity and common sense to work out the answer all by himself.

My DH went away for a fortnight with a couple of friends without me and the kids BUT it was to visit a friend in another country who was going through a very low period and he wasn't the only one who had children and our children were much older at the time. People were still shocked that I "allowed" him to go. I didn't allow him, he's an adult human who made the choice himself.

What I'd ask you is: when is your 10 day Caribbean holiday with friends? When is your family holiday of the same price and distance?

I've never had to ask for permission for my own trips with friends but I've only ever been away for long weekends or a Mon-Friday. Also - those longer trips definitely didn't happen when there was a baby at home.

What's your support system like while he's away?

Is it a big financial issue? It would be for us.

When my Dad's been away on long trips with friends it's been for sports things like a world cup or Lion's tour but for each of these he's done he's taken my mum away on a really special holiday. She's away now with her sisters without him it's not one sided.

For you, the age of your children is a huge deal. That he booked this trip when your baby was newborn or about to be born (I forget) is BATSHIT CRAAAAAZY. How was his instinct not to cocoon his little family, to nurture his wife who's been through this huge physical and emotional rollercoaster that is pregnancy and birth and baby rearing, breastfeeding and broken sleep and all that? It's a major ick to skip away to the other side of the world (I assume you're in the UK usually?!) for no particular reason without you for a jolly.

It was hard enough physically (breastfeeding) and logistically to go on weekend hen dos away from my babies when they were 6 months old and it's really pissing me off that this guy hasn't even thought twice about it. And his friends not even thinking of you and the children. Fuck those guys. Jeez. They're so ignorant.

Look, you can have a lovely 10 day stretch at home without him. When my DH's away we don't eat half an much meat, I use more of the foods he's not a fan of, I get to watch what I want on TV, don't get woken up by his much earlier alarm. It's not all bad. Less of the compromising that's needed in a partnership I guess. But that's not with a 3 month old in the mix and that's where your guy's been a complete dicksplash.

Why couldn't it just be a weekend away?! Mental.

Teacaketravesty · 27/09/2026 15:32

Ten nights? He isn’t much of a family man, is he?

This!!

VickyEadie · 30/09/2026 12:15

Are you absolutely sure these evenings are spent with this male friend? Are you absolutely sure this 10 night holiday is also with male friends?

Is he a high earner? Does he get a lot of annual leave?

This doesn't add up to a man committed to you or his children, I'm afraid.

KalamityKat · 30/09/2026 12:17

I think there needs to be time limit and a cost limit on going away solo.
Anymore than a weekend for a special occasion 40th/50th/Stag/Hen Do is a bit much, especially if you have young kids.
10 days in the caribbean, for no apparent reason, seems way over the top

PinkEasterbunny · 30/09/2026 12:14

This!!

He's a 'lad' don't you know...

user1476613140 · 30/09/2026 13:19

Top tip - use contraception.

purplecorkheart · 30/09/2026 13:23

Utterly selfish, it would be a deal breaker for me. You may as well be a single parent.

Can I suggest that you do not have anymore children with this manchild.

user1492809438 · 30/09/2026 17:58

Clearly not aiming for father of the year. What an immature childish manchild, he is not an adult, and you now have two children. He clearly is not grown up enough to be a father, partner and parent if he thinks a "lads" holiday is ok.

user1492809438 · 30/09/2026 18:03

He's asked your permission. Tell him it is his decision and responsibility to decide if it's ok to go, you won't say one way or the other. Do not let him off the hook by saying he shouldn't go and making you feel the bad guy... he is the bad guy for thinking of it and he must make the choice.

Freeme31 · 30/09/2026 18:50

that not a father that’s the actions of a single man. Why are you allowing this it’s pure madness

MeridianB · Yesterday 18:19

It’s also weird that there is just three of them and the other two are single…
