Does anyone have NO friends or family at all? I realise this is probably extremely unusual but wondered if I was the only one?

Didn't want to ignore-I'm not in this istuation, but anyone of us could be, and I think it'll get more common in the future, as in people once would invite family to be kind, or make a point of seeing friends, but as phrases like protect my peace/no contact seem to get more common, and people don't socialise with workmates as much. I'd make a point of inviting people/talking to people and including people in parties etc, but a lot of people only thikn about themselves now.

No family but I do have friends.

However, I am still ultimately on my own because nice though they are they all have their own families so entirely understandably I am nobody's priority, nobody owes me any sort of care, there is nobody I can totally rely on.

Have dealt with cancer and disability alone.
Covid lockdowns completely alone.
Christmases alone.

I have made peace with it but get sick to death of the assumption everyone has family though.

Humans are over rated anyway.

Animals are much nicer and I have a wonderful cat.

Yes I understand having friends, I just wondered if anyone had no one at all, like not a single person

I am only in regular contact with my brother. My other siblings and parents I am either estranged from or just don’t have anything in common with. I do have friends - not a huge number, but it could be more if I wanted. I find ‘people-ing’ hard sometimes, I can leave interactions feeling drained. Sometimes I think l would like a hermit-type of life.
would you like to have family and/or friends in your life OP?

RaspberryBlues · 25/09/2026 17:32

Sorry, I hope this doesn’t come across as rude because I genuinely don’t mean it that way, but is there anyone who doesn’t have anyone at all? I know some people may have friends but no family, or family but no friends, but I was wondering if there’s anyone who has neither no family and no friends?

I don't. (Neither family nor friends)

Thank you, im glad it’s not me, it’s a very unusual situation and I often have to make things up as I don’t know how to explain it to people

I have no friends OP. I do have a son. He lives in a different city so I don't see him regularly. I understand that is different from having absolutely no family or friends but goodness knows I find my own situation hard enough a lot of the time so I totally sympathise with people who have no one.

Who are you having to explain this to if you don't have any family or friends?

RaspberryBlues · 26/09/2026 13:20

Im online dating and it often comes up in conversation and when people find out it puts them off (understandably)

My friend was totally estranged from family and I was her only friend. She had a traumatic upbringing and this is what led to family estrangement and her treatment of friends. It was awful for her as she got older. She didn’t have children either.

I do have friends, but not a single family member I’m in contact with (I went into care at 9, and they’re all a dysfunctional mess). They are alive, but they aren’t ever going to be normal, healthy people so I protect my peace and stay away.

It wouldn't put me off a potential partner if they didn't have any family, as it's not something most people have any control over. Not having any friends would though as I'm a social person.

But do you want friends OP? Rather than online dating you could focus on building your social life first (and who knows who you might meet that way).

Do you not want friends / is this choice? Or another reason eg new country etc

When I was dating it did put me off if he had no friends as I didn’t want to become someone’s centre of their universe.

RaspberryBlues · 26/09/2026 13:29

Sorry i am just wondering if anyone is in the same situation, rather than asking for advice just wondered if there was anyone else like me.

Dh and I only have each other. Neither of us have any friends, we don’t want any. Neither of us have any family - my mum died in 2019 and she was my only relative, no contact with my dad. Dh is completely no contact with his whole family including his 3 adult siblings. (Long story, they downplayed abuse he’d suffered and made light of a sexual abuse court case / incident he was a victim in).

OsfameronTanamoril · 26/09/2026 14:09

You are in the right place.
MN motto is ' my husband is my best and only friend. I never, ever want any others because of the drama.'

Imtornanddontknowwhattodo · 26/09/2026 14:19

Me.

itsnotalwaysthateasy · 26/09/2026 23:38

I have a 16 year who sits upstairs in her bedroom. She is with her Dad 50% of the time. Apart from that I'm alone.
I don't have any other family or friends. Just work.

And I’m not asking you to. I’m simply saying that if you have the time/inclination/skills to date, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to make new friends, now.

I have tried. I have given up. I have never had friends and doubt i ever will.
