AIBU for calling off marriage for good without proposal after 4 years?

Its my four year anniversary with my partner this weekend.
Im 33, my boyfriend 31.

This is the happiest I've ever been; I have never loved anyone more than this calm, cool, easygoing yet passionate, patient, loyal, funny, handsome, interesting and genuine person. I am so in love. We only moved in this year after the 3 yr mark and its been working out well. We haven't ever had a true 'fight' and generally sort micro issues out there and then. If I'm honest theres only one true fight we have which I've given up on now ; engagement. Nobody else has ever come into our relationship.

I was really surprised to learn that 2 yrs ago when my boyfriend was at a stag do and his friends drunk called me to say hi, his best friend said "hey, you better tell your man IM gonna be HIS best man at YOUR wedding!!!!!!". I felt so excited by this idea as I always thought a 2 yr mark would be ideal if you know youre with "the one". But to my horror I brought it up with him the next day and he said "yeah..im DEFINITELY not ready for THAT"... my boyfriends friends (who ive now inherited as my own) told me he is very "to the book". He was always a Mummy's boy too, following whatever his parents did (they were engaged after five yrs of dating but met at 20!).

The argument was brought up every few months as I saw our friends get engaged within 1-3 years and our last anniversary was awful! I was PMSing and a couple next to us in the posh restaurant looked like they were about to get engaged and I cracked. I told him 3 years was a LONG time not to be engaged and that knowing him with his very long timeline, we wouldn't even be married until I hit 40.

I cant lie, seeing him finally move out of his family house and move in with me has made me realise he DOES want a future. He asked that we open up a bank account together and he has been looking for houses. Quite frankly i feel like he is the one putting in the effort now. We continuously talk about our kids names and it seems he wants kids before marriage merely because the people in our city REALLY milk the wedding. Im talking big, glamour, whitest weddings. I understand that this would be the penultimate stressor.

I dont believe I'd be excited when he proposes now. Its like the novelty has worn off and I have told him that if we're not engaged by next year, I will never marry him. He seemed terribly devastated by this and I felt guilty but reminded him that this relationship isnt on his timeline only.
Honestly, his blasé attitude has put me off having children with him as he doesnt seem to understand im already in peri and most likely wont want a baby after 35.

Im anxious.
I love this man so much but worry how pathetic I'll feel announcing our 4 yr anniversary knowing we're not one step closer to being married. I feel embarrassed also being the older one in the relationship.
I do not want to end this and wonder if it is a step too extreme to completely write off marriage with him as at this point I will clearly be in my mid to late thirties when we actually do it.

There is a small glimmer of hope in me that it may happen this weekend but it feels wishful- my boyfriend was asking me about whether we could see my parents before we go away. He also asked abouy my dad's new job and his scheduled breaks in particular which he never does. He also asked if we could go "very fancy" to the restaurant and suggested I get my hair and nails done the day before which he hasn't done previously but im not holding my breath.

Advice? Thoughts?

At the bottom of OP’s original post she talks about how her boyfriend has been asking about her dad’s work schedules, when he’ll be off, can they go and visit her parents before the anniversary weekend etc.

Obviously implying he intends to ask her dad for permission to propose.

I know! He'll live with her out of wedlock, but seek the father's permission to marry 😵‍💫

Well no-one wants a roast without all the trimmings!

You could get another half dozen SM posts out of the pre-proposal!

I'm being a bit snide: I actually think it's rather nice, though I'd probably ask for their blessing rather than permission. It takes a lot to be a parent and I think it's nice to show you hope they are happy and on board.

Not before the woman herself knows, surely! ☺️

You need to talk to.him and say when are we getting a mortgage,.when are we having children and when are we getting married, he may not want.to get married , say you need dates set in.stone and if he cant you will leave, tell.him your body clock ie when you have children is not down to him its down to mother nature, also how many children does he want, dont be fobbed off...he may well love you but does he want the rest..you cant force him but you can leave him if hes messing you around,

Appreciate the replies - will read through shortly.

Just as I posted this, one of my girlfriends (who my boyfriend has known for 12yrs) asked if I want to get my nails done conveniently the morning of the anniversary. Im getting nervous

Are you poly?

If you want something, you need to ask for it. Propose to him if a wedding is that important to you.

Yes, I think that's fair enough, know where you stand.

Why don't you propose to him?
As in a big fancy "event" proposal if that's what you want.
Or just say "when are we getting married then? Shall we go to the registrar office and get the licences?

Edited

My Mum did this, said to my Dad "are we getting married then or what?" They were married for 60 years ❤️

Based on OPs posts, I think she lives in Liverpool.

Believe it or not you can get married in Liverpool without having the civilian version of a royal wedding, assuming there's no cultural pressure that might prevent one from nipping off to St George's Hall and just getting it done.

By the time I was 21, I’d had 2 surgeries on my ovaries and only one functioning ovary left. Alongside adenomyosis and pcos.

I made the desicion I wanted children young and wasn’t going to piss around and waste my fertile and attractive years on timewasters. I married young and had my dc in my early/mid twenties. I also divorced young. I’m glad I had them young as I now have complications with my cervix and pelvic adhesions/more cysts (29 now).

After divorce, I have no intentions of marrying again. If that’s a dealbreaker for you, I don’t blame you for not wanting to wait around.

My XH proposed after 10 months but I wouldn’t have been waiting years. Especially as I lived in an Islamic country and wanted dc. I made it quite clear that I wasn’t going to piss around waiting or have my time wasted.

I have friends my age and older who have wasted years of their life with time waster men and now back in the dating pool, childless and starting over again.

I am a firm believer in if they wanted to they would.

Bitsostuff · 22/09/2026 18:41

Give your head a wobble.

Do you want to marry this man, build a future with him, have his children - or not?

If you do then you don't have to fanny around for years hoping for a proposal. You can ask him. And then you'll know.

Dad's permission 😱? What?
Is it 1850?.

If I found out someone had felt the need to ask my dad's permission before proposing they'd get a no on the spot, but that's just me.

Yes, I suspect you're not alone! My DD would be quite horrified.
(As would I have been, 40 years ago...)

Honestly op once you’ve been in the marriage a few years you’ll realise what a load of bollocks all this proposal and engagement nonsense is.
The marriage is the key bit not the fluff

Well this just made the thread more exciting 🤣

ThisCraftyAquaHedgehog · 22/09/2026 18:56

Sheesh!
We've been together for 21 years and not got married!

What about if you found out after you’d already said yes? Would you then take back your “yes” if you wouldn’t marry someone who wanted to seek out parent’s permission/blessing first?

She said "permission", not "blessing".

SnoopyPajamas · 22/09/2026 19:03

It sounds like he's comfortable with you but leaving the door open for something better.

You say he's "putting in the effort" . . . by moving in to your place and opening a joint back account. You wouldn't happen to earn more than him, would you, OP? If so, this is setting off some cocklodger alarm bells

ScaredButUnavoidable · 22/09/2026 19:08

LochKatrine · 22/09/2026 19:00

And my question still stands.

Whatwerewetalkingabout · 22/09/2026 19:09

I proposed to my husband. Tbf we were 20 when we started dating but had been together for 9 years at that point, I did it on a weekend break in Rome. 13 years married. Xx

yumscrummy · 22/09/2026 19:10

Why would you announce a four year anniversary?? No one is interested about anniversaries apart from the two people involved.

it’s just a getting together date.

5128gap · 22/09/2026 19:10

Just sit him down and tell him straight that you would like to get married by whenever, how does he feel about that?
Because if you can't ask a simple question in a calm reasonable way, without all this guessing and angsting over it, then you really shouldn't be considering him as a husband in the first place. Marriage for the long game isn't about guessing and wishing, surprises, proposals, what his mate said, its about clear reciprocal communication and honesty about what you both want.

seahorsessky · 22/09/2026 19:12

Do you love him, though? The way you talk about his mum, and him, doesn't sound like a person ready to marry. Maybe it's the way you've typed it, but you sound angry, not happy, and it's not fair on either of you if you're going into it negatively.
On the other hand, if you're thinking no that's not what I meant at all, I love him and want our families to be joined, then ask him. Proposals can be made by women.

Honestly, I probably would, because it's a small thing that is very indicative of us having different attitudes.
