AIBU for calling off marriage for good without proposal after 4 years?

Its my four year anniversary with my partner this weekend.
Im 33, my boyfriend 31.

This is the happiest I've ever been; I have never loved anyone more than this calm, cool, easygoing yet passionate, patient, loyal, funny, handsome, interesting and genuine person. I am so in love. We only moved in this year after the 3 yr mark and its been working out well. We haven't ever had a true 'fight' and generally sort micro issues out there and then. If I'm honest theres only one true fight we have which I've given up on now ; engagement. Nobody else has ever come into our relationship.

I was really surprised to learn that 2 yrs ago when my boyfriend was at a stag do and his friends drunk called me to say hi, his best friend said "hey, you better tell your man IM gonna be HIS best man at YOUR wedding!!!!!!". I felt so excited by this idea as I always thought a 2 yr mark would be ideal if you know youre with "the one". But to my horror I brought it up with him the next day and he said "yeah..im DEFINITELY not ready for THAT"... my boyfriends friends (who ive now inherited as my own) told me he is very "to the book". He was always a Mummy's boy too, following whatever his parents did (they were engaged after five yrs of dating but met at 20!).

The argument was brought up every few months as I saw our friends get engaged within 1-3 years and our last anniversary was awful! I was PMSing and a couple next to us in the posh restaurant looked like they were about to get engaged and I cracked. I told him 3 years was a LONG time not to be engaged and that knowing him with his very long timeline, we wouldn't even be married until I hit 40.

I cant lie, seeing him finally move out of his family house and move in with me has made me realise he DOES want a future. He asked that we open up a bank account together and he has been looking for houses. Quite frankly i feel like he is the one putting in the effort now. We continuously talk about our kids names and it seems he wants kids before marriage merely because the people in our city REALLY milk the wedding. Im talking big, glamour, whitest weddings. I understand that this would be the penultimate stressor.

I dont believe I'd be excited when he proposes now. Its like the novelty has worn off and I have told him that if we're not engaged by next year, I will never marry him. He seemed terribly devastated by this and I felt guilty but reminded him that this relationship isnt on his timeline only.
Honestly, his blasé attitude has put me off having children with him as he doesnt seem to understand im already in peri and most likely wont want a baby after 35.

Im anxious.
I love this man so much but worry how pathetic I'll feel announcing our 4 yr anniversary knowing we're not one step closer to being married. I feel embarrassed also being the older one in the relationship.
I do not want to end this and wonder if it is a step too extreme to completely write off marriage with him as at this point I will clearly be in my mid to late thirties when we actually do it.

There is a small glimmer of hope in me that it may happen this weekend but it feels wishful- my boyfriend was asking me about whether we could see my parents before we go away. He also asked abouy my dad's new job and his scheduled breaks in particular which he never does. He also asked if we could go "very fancy" to the restaurant and suggested I get my hair and nails done the day before which he hasn't done previously but im not holding my breath.

Advice? Thoughts?

We were together 12 years before we got married, btw, as both of us liked the idea of being married but couldn't be fucked with planning a wedding, then realised we could elope abroad and have a holiday and wedding in one go. DH proposed the day before, on the deck of a boat with nobody else out, because he thought it would be funny.

I think there is something red flagish about a man who thinks everything is on his timeline.
Ok, but it would put me off.

No way would i be having children with a man not prepared to enthusiastically marry me pre children, when i have made it clear marriage is a precursor to children.

I think only women with self esteem issues compromise on this in the hope he will come around to the idea.
Its a MN thing I read of, but have not come across it in real life.

It's ok if a man doesn't wish to marry, but absolutely no way is it a good idea to compromise on this and then have children.
Madness in my view.

Start thinking honestly about what you want and your boundaries are on this.

I agree with @Cutletcake.
i only know one couple IRL that even got pregnant before marriage and they were engaged already. The pregnancy just happened a few months before the wedding.

Plenty of people still want to do things in a traditional order.

StarPyjamas · 22/09/2026 19:30

He was 31 and living with his parents. Moving out was par for the course.

I’m not saying he doesn’t want a future with you, just that this isn’t necessarily proof of it.

Either way, stop giving him all the power over your life, and definitely don’t have kids before marriage.

I proposed to my boyfriend "do you want to get married"? His romantic response was "Aye...can do" Grin. Very low key wedding 5 months later and got pregnant on my honeymoon aged almost 38. Just celebrated our silver wedding...get cracking and asking him!

And what is 'my city'. What does that even mean. Is this in the UK?

LochKatrine · 22/09/2026 18:36

Not before the woman herself knows, surely! ☺️

I think these days we are so much more open that most of us kind of know before we know, as it were? Not the actual day of a proposal, but that the concept is in the offing.

I'd be a bit surprised if I'd genuinely not realised it was on the cards and my parents knew first, you are right!

Yes. She is putting a lot of carts before quite a few horses.

But at least if he asks, her nails will be looking great!

Christ it's only been 4 years
Maybe if people were together longer before getting married the divorce rate in this country would be lower.
I really don't see the issue

The marriage issue flows from the kids issue. Since marriage has so many legal benefits, it's strongly advisable for women to be married before they have kids, for two simple reasons: 1) It's usually women's career earnings and pension that take a hit, and 2) you can't make someone marry you after you've had kids, so you're left vulnerable. At least beforehand, you have some leverage. OP is 33. Some men are just clueless about fertility. She'd probably be fine if she got married 12-18 months from now and then ttc, but it could potentially get trickier to have the second baby, assuming OP wants time to have more than one. Especially if Baby No.1 doesn't arrive in a timely manner!

You say that it's only been 4 years and you think they should be together longer, but women face real issues around managing the confluence of childbearing and making sure they get legal protections in place in time for them to have a family. Yes, you could go ahead and have them without being married, of course, but that's really not advisable from a legal and financial point of view.

If OP knew for sure that she could have children throughout her thirties, she might not be so concerned. But she doesn't know that. And some people would much rather have children earlier than later in their thirties.

I see OP's issue clearly. I really hope he proposes this weekend.

CrazyMidget · 22/09/2026 19:51

OP, I have no idea why you've been given such a hard time on here. You sound really genuine in your love for your boyfriend and not just focused on a wedding, at all. Plus, MN is very anti-wedding. It's perfectly possible to have your priorities in order - i.e. to know that the marriage is the most important thing - but still to want a traditional white wedding!

Your concerns about being 33 and not yet engaged, if you want to be married before getting pregnant, are also well-founded. It's not so much the first baby as the next one(s), assuming you want more than one.

And wanting to be married before having children is also extremely wise. And I think four years is more than enough time. I do hope your bf realises that women do not have limitless time to get pregnant and that being 33 and not even engaged yet is a definite concern,

I'm feeling pretty excited about the forthcoming weekend...it does sound hopeful! Rooting for you!

They do, and not surprisingly, because doing things in the traditional order is far, far safer for women, if they're going to have children.

I know! He'll live with her out of wedlock, but seek the father's permission to marry 😵‍💫

These days, no one is actually seeking permission to marry. It's just a nice tradition that some people like to observe. And I bet the bride's parents appreciate it.

It still seems strange and somewhat regressive. Maybe she could ask his parents for permission! 😜

It really doesn't. It reads like a 33-year-old woman who knows she doesn't have oodles of time to have more than one child given that she's not even engaged yet. And like someone who is not at an ideal age reproduction-wise to have to start looking for someone all over again if this man doesn't want to marry her. Women's biology is a real constraint, and OP is sensible to be aware of this.

That would be hilarious, wouldn't it!

I guess it depends how seriously people take the tradition. You could see it as regressive, or you could see it as a part of the whole traditional ritual. Either way, it's a great way to score some brownie points with the in-laws!

ETA: I love what Prince William said. He did ask for Kate's dad's permission, but only after he'd proposed to Kate and she'd said yes! Because, as William put it, "It occurred to me that he might say no!" 😆🤣

Well it wouldn't score brownie points with me or my DH, and our DD certainly would not appreciate it!
I'd be interested to see if our DS partner went for it though, and asked me!

@gingerandpeppermint I told him 3 years was a LONG time not to be engaged

It absolutely isn't. That's a short timeline for engagement, not a long timeline. All people I know who are married were in a relationship for many years before getting married.

I would have thought that 6 - 8 years or more would be a far more sensible timeline for a proposal to happen.

In all honesty, it depends if you want to have children and if your clock is ticking. It sounds very much as if the OP wants children soon.

Well I do.

She's choosing the baby name before sorting out what his plans and wishes really are (I mean she seems to be inferring his willingness from the fact he discusses baby names), she's worrying about looking silly to not get engaged after 4 years, she's swapping the order of things because a big white wedding will be a major stress, and she's worrying about it being somehow embarrassing that she is older.

In all of this, the notion of starting a family with someone who is ready and actually is driven to as well seems to have become lost in a swirl of superficial embarrassments.

It took 10 years for my husband to convince me to get married. I was dead dead against it for years and years. I’d grown up in a family where no one is married and he came from living familes

but it did happen as such. In the end I realised it would be easier paperwork wise. Very tiny wedding with like 10 people. Perfect.

mathanxiety · 22/09/2026 20:33

He DOES want a future...

No, he wants a convenient place to have sex in and someone to cook and do laundry for him.

You'll do all the work of turning him into a marriage prospect and he will dump you for a younger model. He will have three kids with the names the younger woman chooses by the time you're 37.

The baby name talk is 'future faking'. So is the looking at houses.

Whose namenis currently on the lease or mortgage of the place you're living in?

Hellohowareyou112 · 22/09/2026 20:35

I don’t think four years is very long. However, you are 33, you don’t know how long it will take to conceive, and if you know you hundred percent want kids, it would be better to start thinking about it sooner rather than later. Having kids before marriage puts you in a vulnerable position from a legal/asset point of view; if you take the time out of your career, become less employable and the relationship were to the breakdown it is important that you are protected.

So if I was in your position, I wouldn’t necessarily be bothered about the wedding, but I would want something legal and I would want to start cracking on with having children. We started trying at 33 and it took several years. Only just on number two now at 39.
