Should I cancel the wedding over my partner’s drinking and behaviour?

Hi guys
first time user.
im really really struggling right now in my relationship. We’ve been together 11 years and have a child together. Throughout the entire relationship there has been issues around alcohol use on my partners side. He doesn’t drink everyday but when he does drink he drinks excessively. Often times his mood will go from happy to depressed and then he becomes verbally abusive towards me (usually started by me commenting that his mood is up and down and I think I do this partly because I’m on edge waiting for it to happen) I absolutely hate being around him when he’s drunk. He’s either really really irritating, overly loud or generally harasses me despite me asking him to leave me alone. Then the awful part where he becomes verbally abusive or argumentative. I’ve told him so many times over the years my feelings around this. He either doesn’t respond and acts like nothing has happened. Denies that he was abusive or very very rarely apologises, says he’s ashamed and then it will ok for a month until the next time. I’ve been called vile names, been criticised and once been shoved.
we recently went on a family holiday with friends. Day one of the holiday he became drunk and accused me of upsetting our child (our child was tired from travelling) I told him twice I hadn’t upset our child, he kept on and spoke to me with such venom and told me he was sticking up “for his child” this was done in a crowded dinner hall. I walked away to diffuse the situation but ended up in tears. The next day I tried to talk about it and he brushed over it and still stuck to the fact he was sticking up for his child and refused to apologise. He still hasn’t apologised. During the same holiday he became so drunk and loud at the pool during the day that I started to feel embarrassed and anxious. He was knocking drinks back one after the other and eventually urinated on himself twice and laughed about it. I’m so disgusted and I genuinely dont think I can get past this. I’m so emotionally drained and I’m so sick of living my life this way every time he’s had a drink. We have zero communication, I feel he is emotionally immature. I’m very rarely interested in intimacy.
He also gropes me a lot despite me telling him to stop and he laughs it off and says he will never stop. I’m not even sure what answer I’m looking for, Im just so lost right now and I feel totally trapped. We are due to get married next year and I really don’t think I can go through with it. But I’m so afraid to sit down with him and tell him this

OP do you own or rent your home and is it in joint names or just one of you?

Crossroads26 · 21/09/2026 15:17

When is the wedding? Have you told guests? What’s his mother said who paid for the venue?

Edited

Really not focussing on telling guests right now.
weeding wasn’t until next year. Also not sure where u got the idea that the kind and helpful comments wouldn’t be followed either. I posted on here for advice because I need to hear from others that I’m not crazy and overreacting. This is what years of gaslighting and stone walling does to a person. Please do your research on domestic abuse before replying with ignorant judgment.

Because it is very clear that the kind and supportive messages unfortunately won’t be followed. It’s a tragedy but the Op has sucked this up for 11!years so…

Completely incorrect.

You’re just going to have to bite the bullet and tell him you don’t want to marry him - ever! Better to do it now than go through with it and then have the stress of divorce. I promise you this won’t get better. I’m going through divorce at the moment. My STBXH is a functioning alcoholic, but is in total denial about it. He will defend his drinking to the hilt. Amongst other things, it is a huge reason I’m divorcing him. He used to sit at the dinner table on a Sunday afternoon eating his Sunday with TWO, yes TWO drinks. A can of lager and a large glass of red wine. Drinking them both together. And he’d be pissed as a fart. My daughter was only 15 at the time and thought he was hilarious, but she doesn’t anymore. So yeah, you seriously need to have the chat with him but make sure he is completely sober. And DO NOT listen to him when he says he will change. They won’t, they can’t. My husband once tried to do dry January, he lasted 6 days. His words were, “it’s no good I’ve gotta have a drink!” Have you got a supportive family around you OP?

Literally mirror image. Goes from beer to a bottle of red wine. Which I hadn’t seen because it was in a kids cup.
most of the times disguised as we will be at a social event so he is “having a good time. Everyone else is drinking” except no one else is buying another drink before the last one is even finished.

i tried talking to him last night. Was met with anger and complete denial and was told id come into the room “just to have a go” at him. I reiterated I was telling him how I was feeling and then I said “and this is the exact reason I cannot and will not marry you” he said “we won’t then” and walked out of the room.
complete disregard of my feelings and once again not heard.
when I mentioned the holiday and uribatong on himself twice- he said “what’s wrong with that. I’m on holiday enjoying myself”
when I mentioned the drinking in the daytime on a Sunday for zero reason he said “I’ll drink in my own home when I want and who are you to tell me I can’t. It’s not hurting anyone is it?” I said “it is. It’s hurting me, our child and our relationship” I said I am never able to sit and tell him how I feel and what needs fixing etc and he again said “no. You’re just having a go at me” I then said “I don’t want this life anymore. I cannot continue with the abuse and the emotional immaturity”
I was in the middle of another sentence but he walked from the room.
so basically he just validated everything I’ve been feeling for 11 years lol
move cancelled wedding. Now getting my ducks in a row with house and getting him to leave. Thank you for your kind words

@Crossroads26 whatever you decide to do is totally your decision. But hopefully now you know, it isn't you, you're not overreacting. Or crazy! Took me a long time to recognise gaslighting and to get past the damage it's done and I know that striking out for what you need, can be the hardest of things to do. Move forward with confidence and do what's best for you, you don't owe anyone on t'internet anything.

Because that’s a MAJOR plus!! You don’t need to send a round robin to say it’s off. No wedding gift list to cancel etc

I have close friends that I’ve spoken to this last week. Also my younger sister. None of them said a whole lot but they obv said I need to make the decision for myself.

and you told them what you have posted here? And this was their pathetic response? Are you being serious @Crossroads26 ?

No they don’t know the half of it.
my sister is disgusted. I haven’t felt able to fully open up about the rest yet

Yes on less thing to worry about I guess. To be honest I’m not in the headspace to worry about anyone else right now or what they think. This is my life and taking it back. My biggest hurdle to start with was to get clarification that I’m not crazy or overreacting. Judging by this post and my own sub conscience (lol) it is very evident I have infact made the right decision. Everyone else can just go eff themselves

Well done OP on telling him you’re not going to marry him. His arrogant and childish reaction is just giving you even more of a reason to finish with him. You sound so much like me in your posts. You doubt yourself and think, “are things really that bad?” You look at how he is when he’s sober and think it’s not so bad….until the next time he’s pissed. Even now I sometimes feel bad for my STBXH but then I have to remind myself of the times he’s been pissed. The urinating on himself twice is not enjoying himself. He’s deluded if he thinks that. Why do people get in that state? My husband coming home with a grazed bloody nose from falling over when being totally pissed was the final nail in the coffin for our divorce. Well done OP. Stay strong! Onwards and upwards now!xx
