Should I cancel the wedding over my partner’s drinking and behaviour?

Hi guys
first time user.
im really really struggling right now in my relationship. We’ve been together 11 years and have a child together. Throughout the entire relationship there has been issues around alcohol use on my partners side. He doesn’t drink everyday but when he does drink he drinks excessively. Often times his mood will go from happy to depressed and then he becomes verbally abusive towards me (usually started by me commenting that his mood is up and down and I think I do this partly because I’m on edge waiting for it to happen) I absolutely hate being around him when he’s drunk. He’s either really really irritating, overly loud or generally harasses me despite me asking him to leave me alone. Then the awful part where he becomes verbally abusive or argumentative. I’ve told him so many times over the years my feelings around this. He either doesn’t respond and acts like nothing has happened. Denies that he was abusive or very very rarely apologises, says he’s ashamed and then it will ok for a month until the next time. I’ve been called vile names, been criticised and once been shoved.
we recently went on a family holiday with friends. Day one of the holiday he became drunk and accused me of upsetting our child (our child was tired from travelling) I told him twice I hadn’t upset our child, he kept on and spoke to me with such venom and told me he was sticking up “for his child” this was done in a crowded dinner hall. I walked away to diffuse the situation but ended up in tears. The next day I tried to talk about it and he brushed over it and still stuck to the fact he was sticking up for his child and refused to apologise. He still hasn’t apologised. During the same holiday he became so drunk and loud at the pool during the day that I started to feel embarrassed and anxious. He was knocking drinks back one after the other and eventually urinated on himself twice and laughed about it. I’m so disgusted and I genuinely dont think I can get past this. I’m so emotionally drained and I’m so sick of living my life this way every time he’s had a drink. We have zero communication, I feel he is emotionally immature. I’m very rarely interested in intimacy.
He also gropes me a lot despite me telling him to stop and he laughs it off and says he will never stop. I’m not even sure what answer I’m looking for, Im just so lost right now and I feel totally trapped. We are due to get married next year and I really don’t think I can go through with it. But I’m so afraid to sit down with him and tell him this

Ignore this irresponsible advice. It would be a bad idea to leave a housing association property unless you have no other option (ie at risk from him and not able to get an occupation order which would force him to move out).

Housing association property is significantly more affordable than private rental and is hard to get in most of the country.

I absolutely will not be leaving. He can leave. I have 4 dependent children and he is paid significantly higher than me. He earns more in a week than I do in a month. Plus- it’s his fault not mine ☺️

Is his family who all know now bombarding you with the messages for info?

Not heard a thing, not sure if he’s sent his mum the money tbh. So they may not be aware yet

Alcoholics Anonymous and yes we do.

I wouldn’t bother with any of that though, I’d boot his arse into kingdom come and never look back.

Not Alcoholics Anonymous. Al Anon. It’s a different organisation that supports the families of alcoholics.

@Crossroads26 there are about 12 reasons why tut shouldn’t marry this man in your op. The verbal and physical abuse being perhaps the biggest. Any single one of them would have me running for the hills. You know that’s what you should do.

ETA I’m so sorry I only saw one page of replies and hadn’t rtft.

Have you been in touch with the council? The atmosphere must be dreadful?

Not yet. It’s very awkward. We haven’t spoken at all

He is one of these people who absolutely needs to give up drinking completely but simply won't. He is choosing to get drunk and then abusing you. I don't think you should marry him.

Thank you, I cancelled the wedding. He is point blank disagreeing that he has a problem. Will likely not drink now to prove a point. Originally I was waiting until he next became verbally abusive but then thought actually- I’ve had enough NOW. Why wait

AttilaTheMeerkat · 23/09/2026 17:21

Why wait indeed?.

Alcoholics often deny they have a drink problem.

What will you do in the likely event he refuses to leave the property?.

Cotopaxi · 23/09/2026 17:22

You don't need to wait until 'the next time'. All the other times are reason enough.

Well done. Stay strong and be safe.

He won’t leave. No. Chance. Absolutely no chance.

Is he the father of all 4? How old are the other three?

How are the kids coping? I thought there was only one involved but there’s actually 4 and this must be so difficult for them too.

This man isn’t going to leave OP

Crossroads26 · 18/09/2026 18:36

You’re so right. This explains it perfectly. Things get brushed away because he will go to work absolutely fine during the week and behave totally normally and then an event will come up and he behaves that way again

It’s quite similar too to men who have a really bad temper intermittently, it happens , isawful and then it goes away and they can act totally normal as if it never happened and you start to doubt your judgement , think ‘maybe I’m overacting’ maybe I’m too sensitive etc etc - after a while many get immune to it and just learn to go along with it because they don’t want to disrupt lives and plans- ‘oh I will do something about it when we come back off holiday/moved/when I’ve got more hours etc ‘. I think this wedding is bringing it right into focus OP and you realise you don’t want this - I totally get that , he’s not a good person to have in your lives if he can’t get a grip on this.

Thanks for your reply.
I think Ive been really struggling with the idea he is an alcoholic. I need to research more/speak to al anon as someone else suggested. To me an alcoholic was someone who woke up everyday needing a drink.
i originally thought he was a ‘binge drinker’
mom grateful for all the advice on here because it gives me clarification that I haven’t that imagined this or that I’m overreacting. They’ve been eye opening

Op its called ' functioning alcoholic' so he will never except that he has a problem, because he functions mostly,

For you ' the penny has dropped ' eyes wide open ' you know and are experiencing his abusive ways when drunk, its emotional exhausting isn't it, never knowing but always on edge because you know what's coming,

This alone is enough op for you to leave, he will never take accountability or responsibility for his actions when drunk, so you have to decide ' when enough is enough,

It's ewful way to live op, please never excuse a man who doesn't take responsibility for his abusive behaviour,

Am guessing when he isnt drinking everybody love him, great guy, fun bloke and all that, yep but behind closed doors he is abusive towards you with drink,

Please take care op, you know what you need to do,

It’s not just when he’s drunk though

he sexually abuses the Op when stone cold sober

Pinkissmart · 23/09/2026 21:00

God, don’t tie yourself further to this man.

And genuinely doesn’t realise it’s sexual abuse. He tried to say he’s a ‘touchy feely person’ 🤯

OP… he is categorically not going to move out. Surely you can see that?

Makingsenseofitall · 23/09/2026 22:06

Congratulations op. That’s a great decision. i hope you are ok.

Sodthesystem · 24/09/2026 01:48

I mean, alcoholism or no alcoholism, he treats you like crap when he is sober anyway and he’s not sorry so what’s the difference really.

Hope you get him out of your house toot sweet. Maybe the relationship breakdown will ultimately be a catalyst for him getting treatment but, either way, he can do that far far away from you. Becuase frankly he’s a dickhead drunk or sober and that isn’t going to change.

Well done for doing what needed done. There’s no excuse for abuse.
