Husband blames me for a health concern and I feel conflicted

My DH is very doctor-phobic and I suspect he has a big fear of becoming ill. He had not been to a doctor for over 10 years until recently, when he had some urinary symptoms and went to the GP and was treated for a UTI. The doctor also took some blood tests including a PSA (prostate specific antigen).

He went back for the test results today and was obviously shocked to hear that the PSA was raised. The doctor did another blood test, as the PSA can be raised by a UTI, among other things, and told him to come back in 2 weeks.

DH is obviously very worried that this could be prostate cancer, and I get it, I have a lot of health anxiety myself, and anyone would be scared by an abnormal PSA, although it could mean a number of things. However, when he got home and told me what had transpired at the doctor's his second remark, after telling me about the PSA result, was that if he has prostate cancer it is my fault because I don't have sex with him often enough. All the sympathy I felt for him in that moment just evaporated and I am struggling not to feel really angry. Obviously I want to be supportive, and normally would be very, but I am really taken aback and don't really know how to feel. I told him that his comment was not on and he said "whatever" and left the room. He hasn't talked to me since. I feel in some turmoil. Worried, concerned but also angry right now. It is more likely that not that he does not have cancer, but if he does is this going to be the narrative, that it is my fault? How does one cope with that?

No, he isn't super-rich at all! In fact I am the sole breadwinner, although he has been a carer for our son for many years. However, he does have many good qualities. No, I am not going to leave him. (If I was it would have been a while ago when he started this sulking about sex, which was when I became menopausal. I generally just rise above it and ignore his crap, although it does upset me underneath).

If he does have cancer he will no doubt expect to be at least partly guided by what I say in terms of "picking" treatment as I am a doctor and he knows nothing about medicine. So if something goes wrong I suppose it could well be my fault again...

There are some studies that suggest frequency of ejaculation (all ejaculation, not just sex) MAY have a bearing on risk of prostate cancer but it is by no means definite, and other studies fail to demonstrate this. I am sure he has been wildly Googling to find the ones that fit his narrative that I am to blame.

Putting his health issues to one side, he sounds like an arsehole anyway! Of course you're not responsible for his raised PSA 🙄

AmythestBangle · 02/09/2026 16:04

No he is not lying and the doctor (also my GP) is not incompetent. He did exactly what he was supposed to do, which is to recheck the levels before making a uro referral.

The sex is extremely enjoyable, I cannot fault him there, but I just don't feel like it as often as he does, that's all.

How often do you have sex?

DandelionsMakeMeSmile · 02/09/2026 16:08

Stressed or not, that is a horrible comment for him to make. Very spiteful and immature.

These men putting pressure on women to have sex like this, do they not realise that this way of behaving is a massive turn off, which makes sex even less likely?

Big hugs to you, @AmythestBangle. Very unpleasant for you. I hope he gets over himself and that he gets a good result on the test, so he can spend his time thinking of how best to apologise to you.

TFImBackIn · 02/09/2026 16:11

What a really horrible thing for him to say. It sounds like an automatic reflex, to blame you immediately.

Regarding him not working, would he work if your son didn't need care?

AmythestBangle · 02/09/2026 16:12

We have sex about once a week, sometimes less if I am away for work.

He had to give up a professional career years ago because of our son, and he could not go back to that. It suited us for him to always be potentially available if needed, including because I cannot always be available at short notice. I have never had a problem with that, it was a joint decision, I just mentioned it because someone asked if he was "super rich"! Over the last six years he has been building our house.

He sounds like a class "A" Arsehole! It would be very unfortunate if he does have cancer as I can imagine he would lead you a dogs life with his attitude! I would leave him to it, go away for a bit!

smoothorangejuice · 02/09/2026 16:21

What a horrible man.

Happyjoe · 02/09/2026 16:28

Oh god, your husband is cruel. Sorry.

AmythestBangle · 02/09/2026 16:32

He isn't usually horrible, not most of the time, but he does has a (years-long) bee in his bonnet about his need to have sex whenever he wants to, without any apparent thought as to whether I do, and seems to have a blind spot about upsetting me in relation to this. I am just totally gobsmacked that he would use a health scare to bang on this drum, it is so inappropriate.

Does he not understand consent and that he's not owed sex?

Revolting!

DemonsandMosquitoes · 02/09/2026 16:43

Fancy another thirty years of this. Urgh.

Don't accept this behaviour. It's vile.

So why is he googling this if you're a doctor?
Doesn't he respect your professional judgement?

KarminaBurana · 02/09/2026 16:51

AmythestBangle · 02/09/2026 15:33

He has long had periods of telling me how "useless" I am because I don't want to have sex as often as he does (I am in my 60s, he is in his 50s). So that is not new. What really floored me was just pulling this tired old complaint/jibe into a potentially serious health situation. It is likely he is fine, but if he isn't I am going to remember what he said, sure. (To clarify, I don't feel anything would be my fault in any way, but I think what he said was so designed to make me feel guilty, including if it is something serious, and that is hard to take). I need some time to calm down and think about it.

In answer to a question, yes, he does do the silent treatment every now and then, particularly if he has not "got" sex for a few days, as he puts it.

So he's offensive, controlling and manipulative?
You don't need to put up with this.

Offherrockingchair · 02/09/2026 16:57

Most people die with prostate cancer, not of it.

Electricsausages · 02/09/2026 17:02

Wow
i can’t imagine why you would want sex with a bloke with that attitude

Sunbringer · 02/09/2026 17:05

Monstrous comment

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 02/09/2026 17:08

Firstly - no, he hasn't got elevated PSA levels because of your sex life. That's not a thing. There's no real evidence that decreased frequency of ejaculation causes prostate cancer, and even if it did, he could very easily solve that problem by having a wank. Also, it's clear from your follow-up posts that you do have sex - just not as frequently as he'd like. He isn't celibate. Nobody gets prostate cancer because they only fuck their wife once a week instead of every night. He's an idiot.

Secondly - elevated PSA levels can be caused by a multitude of non-serious things, not just prostate cancer.

Thirdly - if he does have prostate cancer, there's a good chance that it will be at such a low level that he doesn't even require any treatment yet (or even at all). When it's a certain type of cancer and appears to be very slow-growing and minimal, they monitor it but don't treat it because the treatment at that level is more harmful than the cancer itself. They will hold off on treating it until it gets to a certain level (which might actually never happen).

Fourthly - he's scared of doctors, is living off your salary, guilt-trips you, calls you horrible things and gives you the silent treatment if you're not prepared to have sex with him on demand. What on earth are you doing with this total cunt? He's awful.

Pallisers · 02/09/2026 17:11

Tells you that you are useless
Gives you the silent treatment
Whines about lack of sex
Blames you for his possible cancer.

Is this really someone you want to grow old with?

Pallisers · 02/09/2026 17:11

Excellent points - just to add, he doesn't trust doctors, but she is a doctor.

Sezza57325 · 02/09/2026 17:15

Is he not capable of having a wank? Well now you’ve seen his true colours, if you hadn’t before

Wishimaywishimight · 02/09/2026 17:15

I would be very concerned that I had married someone so incredibly stupid!
