Boyfriend ended relationship after gym misunderstanding with friendly personal trainer

Hi everyone, I really need some outside perspective because I am in shock and questioning myself.
My boyfriend and I have had trust issues and were trying to rebuild. We started going to my gym together. I am 35, and there is a young PT there (around 20) who is just a naturally friendly person. He gives out fist bumps and hugs to regular members. I’ve only ever spoken to him about gym classes, a lost ring, and a minor incident at the gym. It is purely polite, casual small talk.
Today, as we walked into the gym, the PT smiled and walked over to give me a hug. Knowing my boyfriend's jealousy, I immediately backed off, refused the hug, and gave him a fist bump instead, whispering "no". The PT got the message and walked away.
My boyfriend immediately snapped. He told me I could finish my workout but that he was leaving. I followed him out to his car to try and talk to him, but he was having none of it. He ended our relationship right there in the car. He called me a "liar" and a "slag", saying no woman of his should be close enough for a man to feel comfortable hugging her, and insisted something is going on between us.
He then drove me home, made me go inside to get all of his belongings from my house, and drove off. He has now blocked and deleted me on absolutely everything and refuses to speak to me.
I feel completely blindsided, humiliated, and sick to my stomach. I actively tried to stop the hug to respect his boundaries, and now I'm being punished and dumped over it. Am I crazy? Is this reaction normal, or is this extreme control and an excuse to leave? Has anyone experienced a partner completely cutting them off like this?

Nope.

BarbaraVineFan · 27/08/2026 23:18

I think you dodged a massive bullet there

GracefulPelican · 27/08/2026 23:19

The trash has taken itself out.

Goodbye and good riddance.

AIBUfamilydrama · 27/08/2026 23:20

You don’t want anything to do with a man like that

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 27/08/2026 23:20

Why would you tolerate this sort of insane behaviour? How did you not tell him to fuck off?

ScholesPanda · 27/08/2026 23:22

More red flags than a Soviet parade. In a few months you'll be thankful he removed himself from your life

Alwayschillyatnight · 27/08/2026 23:22

Lucky escape. Honestly.

Loloblue · 27/08/2026 23:23

wow. Lucky escape! This is not going to end well if it continues

butidid · 27/08/2026 23:23

Wow. Thanks goodness he's broken it off. Stay strong when he comes wheedling back.
Do not question yourself, his behaviour is absolutely horrendous, there's no coming back from it.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 27/08/2026 23:24

The guys a cunt. He’s done you a favour by dumping you.

HellsBells13 · 27/08/2026 23:24

Jeez you have been given a gift. Fate showed kindness. This person has shown you controlling behaviour. Kiss the ground and move on.

SerendipityCat · 27/08/2026 23:25

Apart from the name-calling, which is horrible in itself, the "no woman of his" comment would have been enough for me to fuck him right off there and then. Who the fuck does he think he is?
You won't regret being rid of this one, op.

Wittypeach · 27/08/2026 23:26

I just feel really hurt and abandoned!

‘No woman of his’ 🤮. The others have said it. I get you’re blindsided but you dodged a bullet there.

CaptianMunchen · 27/08/2026 23:29

Someone from above has dealt you a massive get out of jail free card.

He’s probably looking at himself in the mirror and having a little cry wank. Fell pity for his low self esteem and move on .

TofuTuesday · 27/08/2026 23:31

This is an opportunity not to be an abused partner and trapped years down the line. It’s a time you would look back on and wish you’d stayed away. Stay broken up and thank your lucky stars.

Spartak · 27/08/2026 23:32

He sounds like a complete prick. When he unblocks you, immediately block him and be grateful never to have to speak to him again.

spaghettiandicecream · 27/08/2026 23:32

If you stay with this man it will get even worse. Be kind to yourself now, block him back. Enjoy your life, this is red flag territory. He potentially will shower you with gifts to win you back. No man that truly loves you would ever treat you like this 🥰 be strong and protect yourself.

Kokonimater · 27/08/2026 23:34

This is GOOD. HE will never change and you cannot sustain a relationship with a man like this. He will control the life out of you.
It hurts but it’s the right thing.
Get support.
Don’t let him back.

Purplerubberducky · 27/08/2026 23:34

This is not normal or ok. Please get rid and seek therapy.

SoVeryVeryBored · 27/08/2026 23:35

Trash took itself out @Wittypeach , saves you a job.

I imagine it was jarring but imagine how much fun you now get to tell people about your crazy ex, and you’ll actually be right!

Justchillinhere · 27/08/2026 23:37

He wants to control you, let him go cry in his coffee. He 's testing you to see if you'll put up, shut up and do as your told. Stay away, block on everything and move on. You dodged a massive bullet

HellsBells13 · 27/08/2026 23:38

You will feel hurt. Do you know why? You are a normal person, that is why.

StorageUnit · 27/08/2026 23:41

Is this really the first flag of this or if you think back to the dating history maybe you will find he has always been like this?

It’s a shame he thinks his behaviour is normal and you are the one in the wrong. Don’t believe for one moment - don’t doubt yourself on this.

The end of a relationship can be hard but as this guy is flipping out on such a mundane, non-event in a gym and ended it while you were in public, this is the best move for your own safety.

When you need to adjust normal interactions for a jealous partner and they make it out like you are the slut or have low morals, then something is really wrong with them.
