Fiancé says he wishes I was dead

Hi everyone my fiance and I were arguing and he just came out with I hate you so much I wish you’d die. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to make of it. He said sorry and that he didn’t know what he was saying it was out of anger. He says horrible things when he gets angry then takes it back and says he loves me. Has anyone been through anything similar thanks in advance

Trust me when I say that he’s just getting started.
Luckily for you, he’s done you a massive favour by letting his mask slip before you got married. It might not feel like it, but he’s helped you dodge a bullet.
Screw the wedding, it doesn’t matter, cancel everything, sell the house… these are not insurmountable problems, just temporary inconveniences.
Just get away from this man while you’re still free to simply walk away.

ZedNotZee54321 · 24/07/2026 10:53

Also, once you are safety out, block him on everything. Cut off all contact. If he somehow manages to get in contact, do not engage, no matter how much he begs, pleads, and says how sorry he is. Block again.
And last but not least, report him for coercive domestic abuse. It doesn't matter if he hasn't physically hit you, domestic abuse comes in many different forms. By logging a report, that means if any woman he gets in a relationship with in the future does a Claire's Law, your report will get flagged up. You could end up saving another woman's life as well as your own.

Wishing you all the best. You deserve better.

Please don't marry him. He's showing you who he really is.

This. When people are drunk or angry their true self comes out.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 24/07/2026 10:55

Get out, get out now! Run as fast as you can.

BinNightTonight · 24/07/2026 11:08

Definitely leave him. He has his feet under the table now (engaged and wedding booked) so he thinks he can control/abuse you. Well, he cannot!

Bluetulips25 · 24/07/2026 11:18

This is unforgivable. I’d rather not marry someone who hated me and who’d wish me dead, whether it was said in the heat of the moment or not. What a bastard.

gardenflowergirl · 24/07/2026 11:19

I couldn't be with someone like that, at all. Do you want a lifetime of hat attitude?

Thanks for the replies. I realise that I do have to call off the wedding I just don’t know how to break it to our families as it’s next month. We have also just bought and furnished a house and it’s just so heartbreaking and confusing. This has all started recently within the last month he was never like this. He has become insanely jealous when I go out with friends (girls) or what I wear and has these sudden outbursts as he said he’s insecure as he knows I get male attention. I’ve never done anything to make him lose trust I’ve even had to cut off male friends due to his insecurities.

Well, he has red flags on his red flags. Run. Run far. Run fast.

12234m · 24/07/2026 11:28

Calling off the wedding is cheaper emotionally and financially than a divorce,

Your friends and family are looking forward to a lovely wedding day but they wouldn't want you to go through with it for them. They'd be horrified and feel guilty if you did it for them.

It's started now because he thinks he has you where he wants you.

Pack a bag, go to your parents, a friends, sister, anyone. Get a big burly man to go tho the house and collect your stuff and tell him it is over. Get legalities with the house sorted first so he can't mess that up.

Bikergran · 24/07/2026 11:36

Get out now. Block on every level. This will escalate. Tell your friends and family exactly why and what he said.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 24/07/2026 11:37

He is not your fiancé. He is a weak man who can’t control his anger.

Sgreenpy · 24/07/2026 11:41

If I were you he'd be an ex fiancé.
Good luck OP xx

allthingsinmoderation · 24/07/2026 11:42

Run ,run for the hills screaming.

AImportantMermaid · 24/07/2026 11:44

You are so, so, lucky you found this out now, and not 5 years down the line when you were married with kids. It will be really hard, but you are 100% doing the right thing. Seek advice on how to leave safely, because it sounds like you are a hairs breath from being on the receiving end of a coercive and controlling marriage.

TreeDudette · 24/07/2026 11:46

He's angry and controlling. It might feel like a nightmare to break it off a month before the wedding but honestly it is so much easier, cheaper and less painful for everyone to do it now than to wait until you are legally tied together and he has isolated you from friends and family (or killed you). Bite the bullet and tell your parents that he has become very angry and controlling and you don't want to marry and if they are half decent parents they'll step up and support you through the call off.

unconditionalmotherslove · 24/07/2026 11:55

Every mother with an adult daughter in similar home/wedding circumstances reading this is now desperate for their baby to tell them so they can help x please x

SchrodingersParrot · 24/07/2026 12:08

OP, I'm so sorry you're going through this.

This has all started recently within the last month he was never like this.

I haven't RTFT so apologies if this has already been mentioned, but could this sudden change in his attitude suggest that he's found someone else?

dh280125 · 24/07/2026 12:27

Life is too short to be with anyone who treats you like that. You’re not married yet, cut him off.

She will be trauma bonded. He’ll have convinced her she can’t do any better, and that this is all her fault for being so annoying and she’s lucky he’s putting up with her. She will be scared of being alone. She will be addicted to the high highs as he will be love bombing her on other days of the week. He will be charming and will have convinced her friends and family he is a good catch so they will all try and encourage her to work things out wit him.

This is SO true!

Thank goodness he started this before the wedding. I think he is feeling comfortable that he can get away with it since you’ve bought the house and the wedding is imminent. Get out before you have children, then you’ll really be stuck for twenty years.

Don’t psychoanalyse him or think you can fix it.

BeddysMum · 24/07/2026 17:54

You probably shouldn't marry him...

Please do it and know that you are absolutely doing the right thing and those who love you may be shocked but will support you.
You will move on and if you wish to find someone else you will.
My ex husband was nowhere near this controlling or vile this early, but deep down I knew the way it was heading. I didnt call it off, there was so much to cancel and so many people invested in the wedding. It was easier to go along with it and hope.
Don't be me.
I nearly ended up dead along with my kids.
Please be strong and also remember that the most dangerous time for a woman is when a relationship is ending, so plan well and keep yourself safe.
Very good luck x
