I am so angry with and feel so hurt by my partner.

I'm just so angry about this that I can't work out how to address it.

I have had the worst 18 months of my professional life and it culminated with me leaving my much loved employment two days ago. I'm not going to go into detail about that because I'm not looking for opinions or advice on that.

And it would be instantly recognisable to other colleagues and stakeholders if i did. Suffice to say that I'm devastated about what and in the way things have been done. And I'm not alone in that. It is not something I deserved or have caused in any way.

This isn't just 'a job'. It is something I've done for 20+ years, it's not just what I do, it's a core part of who I am. Even if I never stepped foot in that environment again, it's still how I would describe myself or at least would until I choose I no longer want to describe myself in that way.

My partner knows this. He has listened, he has supported not just me but my colleagues too (I'm not the only person who has been targeted), I couldn't have got through the last 18 months without him. Frankly, it's been traumatic.

On Friday (my last day at work), he and I went out with a couple of colleagues (who have become very valued friends). I saw my partner talking to someone we both vaguely know. I mean so vaguely that we recognise him to say hello and briefly pass the time of day with but neither of us could remember his name and I don't imagine he remembers ours either - just a face we recognise in the crowd.

I overheard him mention the name of my previous employer.

When he came back to sit with us, I asked what had been said and he glibly replied, "Oh I just told him you used to be a _ but they let you go,"

Used to be a _? Let me go? I was lied about, disregarded, undervalued, overlooked and sidelined for 18 months because my face no longer fit. I was sent to A&E with a suspected heart attack earlier this year through stress. I've cried and felt a sense of loss akin to when my marriage ended.

And he's minimised it to I used to be be a _. I didn't used to be anything. I still am.

I am so angry that he not only reduced the last 18 months to such a simple sentence but that he reduced one of the most devastating and painful periods of my life to chit chat outside a pub to someone whose name he doesn't even remember. I was so angry, I said this in front of my friends. He did apologise and then said, "It's OK, he wasn't even really listening."

That does NOT make it OK.

I am still so angry. I'm angry that he said it, I'm angry that he minimised it in that way. I'm angry that he shared my personal information with a stranger. Angry that he gave this incredibly painful and personal part of me and my life to someone else who didn't even care that he was hearing it and on my last day when he knew how upset I was. And it's also made me feel that I don't want to share personal things with him. How can I give him anything of myself when he treats it with such little care?

He doesn't treat me with little care and it doesn't reflect what he thinks or feels about me but to be so careless with his words...

I need to speak with him but I need to get it clear in my head what I'm going to say and to process the anger here so that I can communicate it effectively.

I am also aware that some of my anger is related to.the situation but I just feel so betrayed by him. I've been made to feel that I don't matter at work for the last 18 months and this has just compounded it.

If it’s someone ypu hardly know he wouldn’t want to be explaining all your complex traumtic problems. He just oversimplified.

squirrelchops2 · 19/07/2026 10:59

You're totally burnt out and everything is heightened at the moment.

Larrythecatforpm · 19/07/2026 11:00

Would you rather he went into lots of detail about your trauma? He just simplified it. Kindly your being unreasonable.

Sidebeforeself · 19/07/2026 11:01

You are targetting your anger at the wrong person here.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/07/2026 11:02

He was making small talk, probably inadvisable to discuss the work situation but maybe the other man brought it up.

Your pain about the whole thing is very clear and I’m very sorry for what you’ve been through but you know the rage and betrayal is about the work not your partner. He’s been consistently supportive and caring, don’t try and pick a fight because you want someone to lash out at. You’re sensitive and floundering, take a breath and don’t try and see attacks where there haven’t been any.

SoAngryAboutThis · 19/07/2026 11:02

No, pf course, I wouldn't rather he shared the trauma. I'd rather he hadn't said anything at all!

This man has no reason or need to be told any of it and no interest.

It's the fact that he said anything at all.

It would be really crazy of him to explain all your personal business to a stranger so he just said something glib to end the conversation, by your own account.

I can hear how badly you are hurting and it's making you wild, like a wounded animal, lashing out. It's completely, utterly understandable, but it isn't something you can put on your partner. Don't hurt yourself even more like this. Don't tear up your own life, which you still have, like this.

baileys6904 · 19/07/2026 11:03

So hes been absolutely amazing and supportive to you AND your coll, but youre super missed cos he didnt detail an experience that you dont even want to detail here?

I think you have misdirected anger.

Therapy is probably a good option

fornobody · 19/07/2026 11:04

He doesn’t know this persons name, do you really want him to have to explain to everyone he ever speaks too in such dramatic detail? This person didn’t care
You are being unfair to him, as you say he’s been incredibly supportive and must be exhausted with the situation too

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 19/07/2026 11:04

You are massively over reacting and being quite unfair to someone you admit has given you a great deal of support during what im sure has been a terrible time. Why on earth would he give anymore detail than that to someone you don’t even remember their name.

Sorry but you owe your partner an apology. He’s not the enemy here. You sound like you would also benefit from some counselling. It’s clear from how you write just how much this has impacted you.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 19/07/2026 11:04

Respectfully, he’s not done anything wrong.

I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through OP.

SoAngryAboutThis · 19/07/2026 11:04

He didn't need to say anything about me. I wasn't part of the conversation. He could have talked about himself. He didn't meed to say anything about me. Nothing at all.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 19/07/2026 11:04

You’re angry and focused on the wrong person. You’re overreacting and your partner sounds like they have been extremely supportive.

SoAngryAboutThis · 19/07/2026 11:05

I'm not angry he didn't give the full details. I'm cross he said anything at all.

ItsPickleRick · 19/07/2026 11:05

YABU, but I understand why.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/07/2026 11:06

The acquaintance prob sly asked how you were and why you were up to. This would be the minimum of information he could give without saying too much. You are obviously upset right now. He did nothing wrong.

fornobody · 19/07/2026 11:07

It’s just small talk. The man might have asked about you or made a similar comment about his wife’s job so your husband made a simple comment in return.
And it will happen again, the options aren’t explain everything that’s ever happened to you in is excruciating detail or refuse point plank to mention you.

Coralsunset · 19/07/2026 11:08

I think you are overreacting tbh.

3luckystars · 19/07/2026 11:09

How did it even come up in the conversation?

I remember someone made a very similar thoughtless assessment of a situation about 20 years ago and I still can’t believe they were so crass and insensitive to say it to me at that time. I was so upset it was like another cut on top of the huge wound. Sorry this happened. You sound devastated.

Can you work for yourself or still do the job?

devildeepbluesea · 19/07/2026 11:11

Come on now. The other bloke might have said, “What are you guys celebrating?” or similar so it’s obvious your partner would just give the potted story.

YABU but I’m very sorry for the way you were treated.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 19/07/2026 11:11

Sorry, but you are overreacting. He was probably asked something and shut it down with the bear minimum. He clearly has your back and has given you nothing but his whole support throughout this distressing period. If you make an issue of this now, I think you may seriously jeopardise your relationship, as I would not take kindly if the partner I had given everything to for all that time started lashing out at me for absolutely nothing.

I echo someone else's comment. Therapy would be beneficial (not just because of how you've reacted to this but how everything has impacted you).

SoAngryAboutThis · 19/07/2026 11:12

He can make small talk.about his own personal stuff then. In the unlikely event this man had asked about me, he could.have just said, "Oh, she's fine."

Or he can overshare his own personal life. But he doesn't. Because its private.

OP posts:
CrustyBread1977 · 19/07/2026 11:12

You’re overreacting. Evidently the conversation went in a direction where it was appropriate for your partner to say something about your work, and he found a neutral way to describe it. He obviously thought really carefully about what to say, how to word it to satisfy social norms without saying anything about the details or the trauma.

If he’s a good partner otherwise, forgive him and move on.

madroid · 19/07/2026 11:12

I agree you are being unreasonable, misdirecting your anger and sound understandably super sensitive.

But stop defining yourself as your job role. You are so much more than that and at the end of the day a job is really only a means to an end ie to make a living. Much more important is your family and loved ones so don’t mess that up because they are a lot less replaceable!

OneNewLeader · 19/07/2026 11:12

Don’t let whatever happened in your professional life, also destroy your personal one.

He isn’t minimising all that has happened to you, because he supported you through it, actions count, words, not so much.
