Single mum, fully divorced and single for most part of 2 years(few dates).4 children between 17 and 11.
I have been dating a guy for nearly 4 months. We met on an app.He is separated with 2 children (12 and 7)the 12 year old struggles with ADHD and behaviour.
On starting the relationship he disclosed he lived in a cabin he built at the end of the garden in marital home.He parents 50/50.The living arrangements weren't ideal to me but I saw past it.
Within about a month of us dating he told his wife about me and she had a big reaction.Took a knife to his clothes, burnt his documents and photo's etc and the police were called. He has since moved in with his mum and he told police he wanted to pursue it and she was arrested and now on bail and not allowed to communicate with him.She told the police he was controlling etc for years and he is the abusive one.He maintains it is all her and he went on a course for perpetrators of domestic abusive previously because she told him to.
I probably should of stepped away at this point.

Fast forward and we have had some amazing time spent together but red flags are now starting to appear.
He has always wanted the relationship to move quickly, wanted our kids to meet etc.Mine would not be interested in this and it is way too soon.My children know I have a boyfriend and seen him in passing but my older son does not like it.I have said that I want to take things slow and spend free time together keeping kids etc out of it.Potentially for a very long time, he would move alot quicker if he had his way.
He appears insecure and anxious and admits this, several times he questions my text communication.Would happily text all day every day and if I am busy with work etc or with kids I am questioned about being distant etc.If he doesn't hear from me for a few hours he has been anxious and he said his mind runs away....apparently his wife used to cheat.
I have a healthy coparenting relationship with ex husband and amicably friends.Bf has said before he thinks ex has alterior motives for being friendly to eachother.Once he was upset because he bought me some new dungarees and he was upset my ex saw me in them before him because I dropped off the kids.Recently he has been upset that my coparent gave me a free gym code to use once a week so I don't have to pay a monthly membership. I had some gravel delivered for the garden and I borrowed my exes wheelbarrow instead of using my boyfriends and the ex also looked at an outside tap for me that wouldn't work.He said I am hurtful to him by doing these things, I don't validate his feelings, he is shocked by me, I need to take full accountability and apologise and consider his feelings etc.
He also struggles with his son's behaviour and quite often makes it about his feelings and not his sons.He has described previously that he verbally 'laid into' his son etc and when I express concern about this he doesn't like it.
Very long winded I know but I am really thinking this is more hassle than it is worth.I have come out of the otherside of my divorce and perhaps I am silly to sign up for this hassle and potentially unhealthy relationship? Any kind feed back or thoughts.I am in peri at the mo and worrying I am not seeing this situation for what it is with the health/hormonal ups and downs too.

YABU for wearing dungarees.

Other than that this guy sounds like an immature, insecure, emotionally stunted dickhead. Dump!

I’m not asking this to be awful - but are you desperate for company ? Because this guy is a lunatic. The whole living in the garden is wild.

If you stick this one out - it’s going to be very painful for you in the long run and you will be absolutely miserable. He’s already trying to manipulate and control you and you seem oblivious to this

KnowledgeableAvocado · 18/07/2026 11:59

Run. And don't look back.

Yeah after 4 months, I think I know I am being an idiot deep down

There are nice guys out there. Hold out for something better - you deserve it! In the meantime can you work out why you have attracted someone to you who has a lot of insecurity and other difficult issues? To avoid similar again.🌺

He maintains it is all her and he went on a course for perpetrators of domestic abusive previously because she told him to

Sure, Sure. Why ever would he lie about a thing like that?

In other news, I have a lovely bridge going for an absolute song...

Come on now. Does he have a gold plated cock?

(Even if he does, sack him off immediately and find your self respect)

What the actual fuck. If you stay, you only have yourself to blame.

Moanyoldmoan · 18/07/2026 12:06

From someone who didn’t get out when I should have and endured 5 years of utter hell please leave. This will only go one way

Spud90 · 18/07/2026 12:06

Going against the grain here. I was ready to tell you to run a mile and I still might but after reading the whole thing something stood out to me.

It sounds like he has ADHD, especially given his son has it and it’s commonly hereditary. Fear of rejection, anxious attachment, overthinking and difficulty with emotions are all common in ADHD.

If you really like him, I would do some reading into it and decide if you could handle dealing with that. If you decide you can then speak to him about it and see how he responds.

If you don’t like him that much or he doesn’t respond well to it then run a mile.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/07/2026 12:06

What is it with the extra long OPs today?

GSDLOVER · 18/07/2026 12:07

Sounds like the wife could be right, I would honestly leave both these crack pots to each other and run fast very soon.

TheIdlerReturns · 18/07/2026 12:08

Run, not just from him but from the ex. Do you really want a knife-wielding angry person in your background?

godmum56 · 18/07/2026 12:10

you have been dating 4 months??? What took you so long to wonder about red flags?

Bestfootforward11 · 18/07/2026 12:10

Good lord. End this now.

I mean, she sounds like a nightmare too, but this doesn't ring true.

I agree with this and that she also sounds a problem if she thinks it ok to set people’s belongings on fire etc

dylexicdementor11 · 18/07/2026 12:10

Run for the hills.

Sodthesystem · 18/07/2026 12:11

Holy shit lady. See the hills, they’re fucken that way! Run!

Also NOT insecure - controlling.

Every single time a woman is on here saying oh maybe he’s insecure, it’s not insecurity, it’s controlling. Insecurity is not an excuse to push other peoples boundaries and it is not a symptom of being insecure. You can be insecure and make changes to yourself because of it but once you start letting your feelings dictate how others should behave in ways they aren’t comfortable with - that’s controlling. Not insecurity. Control.

His ex wife ain’t lying.

Latteapparel · 18/07/2026 12:11

I agree with the posters who say he is a red flag, I’d definitely check into Clare’s Law.

But I DO want to offer a different perspective: you sound too entrenched with your ex still. You need to learn to sort things out yourself, having him round to sort the tap, accepting gym codes, borrowing the wheelbarrow etc, etc. You share children together and it’s amazing that you have a good’s relationship but that’s where it should end. No need to partner is going to be comfortable with this level of dependency. I started dating someone 4 months ago and he has two teenage children. He has been divorced for four years, separated for 8. I recently asked if he owns a jet washer and he sheepishly said yes but that it’s an his ex wife’s house as it’s jointly owned so he borrows it from her. I have a perfectly good jet washer that he can borrow and I’d rather he borrow mine! Everytime he turns the TV on and selects the Prime app, I have to see numerous profiles of which one is his ex’s name, they have a shared bank account for the boys (I think that’s ok), they have keys to each others houses. It really does make me uncomfortable, it’s like a constant reminder of her and if I’m honest, it makes me feel he is still connected to her in more ways than co-parenting.

ruprect2003 · 18/07/2026 12:12

Run as fast as you can! It will be downhill from now on.

TheTikiTurnip · 18/07/2026 12:14

Get out now, because this only gets worse.

He wants to move in, and will then start controlling every aspect of your life.

They always blame it on the 'crazy ex'.
Get out and dont look back.

fuggetaboutit · 18/07/2026 12:14

All the red flags. Run!
