Is new bf a red flag?

Single mum, fully divorced and single for most part of 2 years(few dates).4 children between 17 and 11.
I have been dating a guy for nearly 4 months. We met on an app.He is separated with 2 children (12 and 7)the 12 year old struggles with ADHD and behaviour.
On starting the relationship he disclosed he lived in a cabin he built at the end of the garden in marital home.He parents 50/50.The living arrangements weren't ideal to me but I saw past it.
Within about a month of us dating he told his wife about me and she had a big reaction.Took a knife to his clothes, burnt his documents and photo's etc and the police were called. He has since moved in with his mum and he told police he wanted to pursue it and she was arrested and now on bail and not allowed to communicate with him.She told the police he was controlling etc for years and he is the abusive one.He maintains it is all her and he went on a course for perpetrators of domestic abusive previously because she told him to.
I probably should of stepped away at this point.

Fast forward and we have had some amazing time spent together but red flags are now starting to appear.
He has always wanted the relationship to move quickly, wanted our kids to meet etc.Mine would not be interested in this and it is way too soon.My children know I have a boyfriend and seen him in passing but my older son does not like it.I have said that I want to take things slow and spend free time together keeping kids etc out of it.Potentially for a very long time, he would move alot quicker if he had his way.
He appears insecure and anxious and admits this, several times he questions my text communication.Would happily text all day every day and if I am busy with work etc or with kids I am questioned about being distant etc.If he doesn't hear from me for a few hours he has been anxious and he said his mind runs away....apparently his wife used to cheat.
I have a healthy coparenting relationship with ex husband and amicably friends.Bf has said before he thinks ex has alterior motives for being friendly to eachother.Once he was upset because he bought me some new dungarees and he was upset my ex saw me in them before him because I dropped off the kids.Recently he has been upset that my coparent gave me a free gym code to use once a week so I don't have to pay a monthly membership. I had some gravel delivered for the garden and I borrowed my exes wheelbarrow instead of using my boyfriends and the ex also looked at an outside tap for me that wouldn't work.He said I am hurtful to him by doing these things, I don't validate his feelings, he is shocked by me, I need to take full accountability and apologise and consider his feelings etc.
He also struggles with his son's behaviour and quite often makes it about his feelings and not his sons.He has described previously that he verbally 'laid into' his son etc and when I express concern about this he doesn't like it.
Very long winded I know but I am really thinking this is more hassle than it is worth.I have come out of the otherside of my divorce and perhaps I am silly to sign up for this hassle and potentially unhealthy relationship? Any kind feed back or thoughts.I am in peri at the mo and worrying I am not seeing this situation for what it is with the health/hormonal ups and downs too.

For your safety and sanity you need to end this so-called relationship as a matter of urgency. Be prepared for him to turn very nasty, he won't go quietly.

Isthereanotherplanettoinhabit · 18/07/2026 12:42

I’d be really interested to hear about these amazing times OP because I’m reading about a domestic abusing man who lives in a cabin, who is possessive, gets upset about texts, wheelbarrows and god knows what else. Who has children who have problems, that he has probably hit, and a clothes destroying ex wife. Personally I would listen to the ex, she probably had a terrible time with him and the kids are damaged because of this. I would run a mile because before you know it, he is moving in, checking your phone, mileage, isolating you from everyone who can support you, abusing you, eroding your confidence and self worth and your life will be hell on earth. Incidentally has he wined and dined you, took you to Paris etc? Doubt it.

travailtotravel · 18/07/2026 12:42

I'm sorry lovely, but you're worth way more than this.

VoiceFromThePit · 18/07/2026 12:43

He’s an immature fruitcake

Oh dear. He doesn't want to live with his mother does he? Bad luck OP.

Bumdumdarumdum · 18/07/2026 12:46

How could you be bothered with the drama?

Etoile1 · 18/07/2026 12:46

I put in a Clares Law request on the 8th of July.I know you are all right and I have been very silly to try and justify in my mind the things he has said.I suppose I just wanted to have reassurance that my worries are valid.I am generally a people pleasing person and find confrontation hard.I know I need to end this and just be one my own for a bit.

Remember you divorced your ex because you wanted a better relationship, or a better life on your own. Don't sabotage whatever it took for you to make those moves and think of your past self and what she wanted for you today when she made those decisions- it wasn't this.

Tablesandchairs23 · 18/07/2026 12:49

Absolutely get rid of him.

Jackrussellmansion · 18/07/2026 12:49

Have you done a Claire's Law disclosure? If not, do it ASAP.

Then run. Fast.

Run a mile.

Agreed. OP he’s showing you who he is. It wouldn’t surprise me if he made up the shit about his ex, he’s the one that’s had to go on a DV course after all. Do not get any more entwined in his life. End it (and take steps to do it safely - not when you’re alone with him.

I once read on MN ‘no one falls in love like a man who needs a house’. That poster was a wise woman and that could maybe be the case here.

Along with all the other red flags everyone else has mentioned.

100 % true.

ThisSillyPoet · 18/07/2026 12:52

He’s angling to move things fast because he needs somewhere to live….
RUN!

Lotsofsnacks · 18/07/2026 12:53

OP, do you really need to ask, with all the flaming red flags your new bf is showing?!! Hes desperate for somewhere to move into, to
get out of his parents house. Love bombing and extreme jealously after just 4 months? Just no, you sound lovely, please run!

please finish this and learn to read warning signs from early on. I would stay single for a bit, dating is not worth the hassle.

TisEye · 18/07/2026 12:54

@Etoile1 - your worries are indeed valid.

Trust your gut - it's good that you recognised the problems so early, and theres nothing wrong with looking for some reassurance.

SylvanMoon · 18/07/2026 12:54

It's nothing to do with your hormones. Your instincts and behaviour so far are absolutely correct. Run far away from this man. Even if his ex really is a psycho, he's got nothing going for him that's good. You deserve so much better.

ClairDeLaLune · 18/07/2026 12:54

He is controlling. It’s only been 4 months. He’ll get worse. Dump him.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 18/07/2026 12:56

Leave now, run very fast in the opposite direction…. and don’t look back. He is a controlling, nasty man!! He didn’t go on the DV course because his wife told him too, he went on it because he had too!! Finish it today!!

PS5Gamer · 18/07/2026 12:57

He’s a walking, talking red flag.

Dump, delete and block. Change locks, and get a Ring doorbell

Wheresthebeach · 18/07/2026 12:57

Get the hell away from him

Absolutely this. Breaking up with abusers is the most dangerous time for a woman. Don’t be alone under any circumstances. Don’t fall for any crap off him and if you can go and stay with friends or relatives do it, to put some distance between you and him. You deserve so much better, what can he possibly offer you in the future?

Foodylicious · 18/07/2026 13:01

Anxious my arse, he's a controlling abuser.
Step away now.
If you are in anyway fearful about his reaction when you break it off, then this also answers your question.

dapsnotplimsolls · 18/07/2026 13:04

If you feel yourself wavering at any point - come straight back here!
