Single mum, fully divorced and single for most part of 2 years(few dates).4 children between 17 and 11.
I have been dating a guy for nearly 4 months. We met on an app.He is separated with 2 children (12 and 7)the 12 year old struggles with ADHD and behaviour.
On starting the relationship he disclosed he lived in a cabin he built at the end of the garden in marital home.He parents 50/50.The living arrangements weren't ideal to me but I saw past it.
Within about a month of us dating he told his wife about me and she had a big reaction.Took a knife to his clothes, burnt his documents and photo's etc and the police were called. He has since moved in with his mum and he told police he wanted to pursue it and she was arrested and now on bail and not allowed to communicate with him.She told the police he was controlling etc for years and he is the abusive one.He maintains it is all her and he went on a course for perpetrators of domestic abusive previously because she told him to.
I probably should of stepped away at this point.

Fast forward and we have had some amazing time spent together but red flags are now starting to appear.
He has always wanted the relationship to move quickly, wanted our kids to meet etc.Mine would not be interested in this and it is way too soon.My children know I have a boyfriend and seen him in passing but my older son does not like it.I have said that I want to take things slow and spend free time together keeping kids etc out of it.Potentially for a very long time, he would move alot quicker if he had his way.
He appears insecure and anxious and admits this, several times he questions my text communication.Would happily text all day every day and if I am busy with work etc or with kids I am questioned about being distant etc.If he doesn't hear from me for a few hours he has been anxious and he said his mind runs away....apparently his wife used to cheat.
I have a healthy coparenting relationship with ex husband and amicably friends.Bf has said before he thinks ex has alterior motives for being friendly to eachother.Once he was upset because he bought me some new dungarees and he was upset my ex saw me in them before him because I dropped off the kids.Recently he has been upset that my coparent gave me a free gym code to use once a week so I don't have to pay a monthly membership. I had some gravel delivered for the garden and I borrowed my exes wheelbarrow instead of using my boyfriends and the ex also looked at an outside tap for me that wouldn't work.He said I am hurtful to him by doing these things, I don't validate his feelings, he is shocked by me, I need to take full accountability and apologise and consider his feelings etc.
He also struggles with his son's behaviour and quite often makes it about his feelings and not his sons.He has described previously that he verbally 'laid into' his son etc and when I express concern about this he doesn't like it.
Very long winded I know but I am really thinking this is more hassle than it is worth.I have come out of the otherside of my divorce and perhaps I am silly to sign up for this hassle and potentially unhealthy relationship? Any kind feed back or thoughts.I am in peri at the mo and worrying I am not seeing this situation for what it is with the health/hormonal ups and downs too.

Well done OP.

Are yii aware that once you have told him not to contact you again and if he does it two more times it constitutes stalking - which the police take very seriously. If this happens please report him. Please let your neighbours, colleagues ex, kids know that they should not talk to him and to alert you if they see him lurking. Do you have a ringdoor bell, also security to the back and dash cam for your car? The most dangerous time for women is when they leave men. I would update the police that you have now left him. Expect the fake crisis (health, family) etc to break thru your boundaries. Do not engage. Please be extra cautious.

Lol the emotionally manipulation of “I thought our relationship was stronger than just giving up” trying to imply you are somehow “weak”. Relationships are not and should never be a a fight. Let alone at 4 months in. Abusers like to convince you it is some how you two against the world. It isn’t. It’s just dating. You aren’t Romeo and friggin Juliet just because HIS ex wife thinks he is a bastard.

Having boundaries isn’t weakness, it’s strength.
Good on you for getting rid.

Hopefully he will leave you alone now…but don’t answer calls from unknown numbers, or accept friend requests from unknown people. Don’t be surprised if you get a letter through your door or gifts delivered (return them to sender without opening when possible).

This!!!!!

I don't think you have heard the last from him, please be careful and aware of what's going on around you.

But also, well done for acknowledging the red flags and doing something about it.

So an update....I had told him I needed space to stop him pestering while I thought about how to end it.He has kept asking me to talk tho.

I text and said ' I have decided that I don't want to continue seeing you.I don't think I can give you what you need from a relationship and I think I want to be on my own for now and concentrate on my children'

The initial reaction was ' wow I thought our relationship was stronger than just giving up' then 'you have shocked and upset me by saying this'

I just responded saying I have been honest and wish you well in the future. He seems to of accepted this and is being nice saying thankyou to me and he won't forget me etc.

Seems like it has gone too smoothly

I won't be responding to him again

Hopefully, it will be the last you hear from him, but don't be at all surprised if it isn't. Controlling men like this, rarely accept the end, especially if it's been instigated by the woman. I would make sure you have a Ring doorbell or cameras. Don't answer calls from unknown numbers or accept unknown social media requests. Take screenshots of any messages he sends.

Sorry, I posted this before reading the latest posts 🙈. Glad for you that you've decided to end it. You don't need that kind of drama. Let's hope that's the last you'll hear from him🤞🏻

I mean, she sounds like a nightmare too, but this doesn't ring true.

You only have his version of events of his wife and it is completely normal for domestic abusers to claim their ex partners are crazy etc but in reality it’s THEM

@Etoile1

A very wise decision and a very good break up message! Congratulations!

Yes, any further message should be responded to with "We are over. Please do not contact me again".

I know.....he is deluded.
I haven't blocked as I don't want him turning up at my house and then I have evidence if needed if he won't let it go.
Like I said I'm not responding now but I have had a last message(hopefully).
It sayd 'just so you know I am devastated and I thought we were in it for the long haul'

I have so dodged a bullet here

Well done .
Do you have a ring doorbell because often men like him dont take no for an answer and things escalate when they dont make headway by messaging?
You are right you have dodged a bullet.

He sounds like a bullet I dodged, to be honest.
It was the same old crap about me still being in contact with my ex. He tried to make me put my foot down with my child as he just so happened to "bump" into us when we were out. My child took an instant dislike to him, which, looking back, was probably a pretty good judge of character.
My ex then found out some worrying stuff about him and put in a Claire's Law request. At first, I was a bit annoyed that he'd done it. But when the information came back, it genuinely shocked me. The bloke was awful/vile.
I'd already started backing away by then. I told him he was a bit too intense and that I wanted to focus on my kids. On the surface, he was surprisingly fine about it and his texts were all very neutral. But every now and then he'd slip up and show his true colours. It was obvious he'd been warned by the police before, but he just couldn't help himself.
Eventually, I told him about the Claire's Law request and the lies he came out with were unbelievable. Looking back now, the red flags were everywhere. He was living with his parents too and tried to convince me that his tenancy had just happened to end around the time we started seeing each other, so he had no choice but to move back in with them. At the time, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but in hindsight, I think there was a lot more to that story than he was letting on. He had no friends, no life of his own!! Run for the hills!

MargotGobby · 20/07/2026 17:42

Well done for getting this scary person out of you and your children’s lives. I hope you don’t hear from him again - maybe have your ex or big burly friend on call for the next couple of days. Congratulations again and enjoy your red flag nutter free summer!
