Is new bf a red flag?

Single mum, fully divorced and single for most part of 2 years(few dates).4 children between 17 and 11.
I have been dating a guy for nearly 4 months. We met on an app.He is separated with 2 children (12 and 7)the 12 year old struggles with ADHD and behaviour.
On starting the relationship he disclosed he lived in a cabin he built at the end of the garden in marital home.He parents 50/50.The living arrangements weren't ideal to me but I saw past it.
Within about a month of us dating he told his wife about me and she had a big reaction.Took a knife to his clothes, burnt his documents and photo's etc and the police were called. He has since moved in with his mum and he told police he wanted to pursue it and she was arrested and now on bail and not allowed to communicate with him.She told the police he was controlling etc for years and he is the abusive one.He maintains it is all her and he went on a course for perpetrators of domestic abusive previously because she told him to.
I probably should of stepped away at this point.

Fast forward and we have had some amazing time spent together but red flags are now starting to appear.
He has always wanted the relationship to move quickly, wanted our kids to meet etc.Mine would not be interested in this and it is way too soon.My children know I have a boyfriend and seen him in passing but my older son does not like it.I have said that I want to take things slow and spend free time together keeping kids etc out of it.Potentially for a very long time, he would move alot quicker if he had his way.
He appears insecure and anxious and admits this, several times he questions my text communication.Would happily text all day every day and if I am busy with work etc or with kids I am questioned about being distant etc.If he doesn't hear from me for a few hours he has been anxious and he said his mind runs away....apparently his wife used to cheat.
I have a healthy coparenting relationship with ex husband and amicably friends.Bf has said before he thinks ex has alterior motives for being friendly to eachother.Once he was upset because he bought me some new dungarees and he was upset my ex saw me in them before him because I dropped off the kids.Recently he has been upset that my coparent gave me a free gym code to use once a week so I don't have to pay a monthly membership. I had some gravel delivered for the garden and I borrowed my exes wheelbarrow instead of using my boyfriends and the ex also looked at an outside tap for me that wouldn't work.He said I am hurtful to him by doing these things, I don't validate his feelings, he is shocked by me, I need to take full accountability and apologise and consider his feelings etc.
He also struggles with his son's behaviour and quite often makes it about his feelings and not his sons.He has described previously that he verbally 'laid into' his son etc and when I express concern about this he doesn't like it.
Very long winded I know but I am really thinking this is more hassle than it is worth.I have come out of the otherside of my divorce and perhaps I am silly to sign up for this hassle and potentially unhealthy relationship? Any kind feed back or thoughts.I am in peri at the mo and worrying I am not seeing this situation for what it is with the health/hormonal ups and downs too.

SqueakyFromme · 18/07/2026 09:02

Chuffin Hell ! You do not need this shit in your life

Sally2791 · 18/07/2026 09:06

Run and fast!!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 18/07/2026 09:10

He needs a place to live and someone to help him with his son and that is why her is pushing so hard. Personally I couldn't live with all that drama, life's too short.

Sussyknowsthemeaningoflife · 18/07/2026 09:14

He's looking for a place to live. 🚩

Hamela · 18/07/2026 09:14

He lives at his mum's
He's abusive to his kids and ex
For some reason he wants access to your kids after only FOUR MONTHS

Leave him, immediately, and get therapy before even considerimg dating anyone else, it will be the greatest gift you ever give yourself ❤️

OpheliaNightingale · 18/07/2026 09:19

This is the honeymoon period! The best it will ever be!

Duvetdayneeded · 18/07/2026 09:19

I think you know deep down he is a massive walking red flag.

  • Trying to push the relationship quickly, forcing kids to meet after less than four months.
  • wanting to know your whereabouts
  • reacting if you don’t reply straight away
  • trying to cause division with your co parent etc.
He’s probably rushing the relationship because he wants to move into yours asap (which is a red flag on itself) and get his feet firmly under the table.
WorkHardPlay · 18/07/2026 09:21

Potentially unhealthy!?!? It’s ALREADY unhealthy … get him in the bin, and run.

whippersnapper55 · 18/07/2026 09:22

I'm honestly baffled at some of the things I read on here! Do you really have to ask??

rainbowstardrops · 18/07/2026 09:24

I don’t usually jump straight to LTB but I wouldn’t continue this relationship personally.
I’d hazard a guess that he wants to move quickly because he wants to come and live with you and dump all the behaviour from his child/children onto you. Don’t be a mug. It’s been four months ffs and he’s already berating you for your healthy relationship with your ex. I’d walk away. Really quickly!

Friendlygingercat · 18/07/2026 09:27

I only read as far as the problems with police and ex wife. I would have dumped at that stage. He has too much baggage to get involved with and you have two kids to think of. Potential cock lodger. You can do better

Gardenisablooming · 18/07/2026 09:30

This is him on his best behavior ..
No man as in love as one who needs a new address.

Oh and someone to raise his nightmare dc..
get rid today..

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/07/2026 09:30

Your boundaries in relationships already skewed by previous poor life experiences, are being further eroded by this cocklodger in waiting now. You were actively targeted by him because you are a single parent. In these men’s heads they think that such women are so desperate for make company that this put up with any old shit.

What do you want to teach your kids about relationships and what are they learning here?.

This man is a walking red flag and this so called relationship should end asap, preferably today citing you as the reason for it ending. I would second the suggestion for you having therapy to address why you chose him to date and why you did not leave him in the dust far sooner.

SecretSquid · 18/07/2026 09:35

So: wife was the abusive one, yet he chose to live at the BOTTOM OF HER GARDEN when they split.
And she went nuclear when she found out about you - makes me wonder how separated they were at that point. My guess is not as separated as SHE thought.
Yet HE did the DV course.
HE is pushing for kids to meet, HE can't handle his own children's needs.
Doesn't like you having an amicable relationship with your ex.
Starting to control what you wear, who you see....
If you can't see the red flags girl, you need to get to Specsavers.

user293948849167 · 18/07/2026 09:41

Oh fgs just end things, this has disaster written all over it.
Be careful when you do end it, this is the type of guy who won’t go quietly.

notapizzaeater · 18/07/2026 09:47

Run, after 4 months you should still be in the honeymoon phase not this crap !

cloudtreecarpet · 18/07/2026 09:48

Agree with everyone, he sounds awful, the situation sounds awful & potentially dangerous and you only have his word for everything that has gone on - bet his ex wife would say something very different!

Definitely one to walk, if not run, away from especially as you have children.
End it asap.

Gemilo · 18/07/2026 09:57

Lord, this sounds exhausting and it is only after 4 months. It will only get worse. He sounds incredibly needy and controlling. Please get rid of him before it becomes too hard. You are worth more.

JustAboutHangingInThere · 18/07/2026 09:59

Run

INeedAnotherName · 18/07/2026 10:03

Crazy ex wives usually end up not being that crazy OP, and if they do tend to have slightly weird behaviours it usually stems from how she is reacting to him.

It's only 4 months and he's already kicking off about your clothes and texting time. Soon it will be about your friends and time spent with your family.

Run. And block.

BauhausOfEliott · 18/07/2026 10:56

Fucking hell, this man is awful.

JoyousWriter · 18/07/2026 10:57

A domestic abuser who needs somewhere to live....
