Boyfriend strange with money

Midfortiescamb · 08/07/2026 23:00

My boyfriend is confusing me. Been together about 1.5 years, both 47, divorced. I have three kids, shared custody, he has two who are 15 and 12 and he sees every other weekend. He's lovely with my kids and easy to be around, bit over chatty but fine. He's generally kind and patient and has gotten over pushing us to live together which was driven by the fact that he hates paying rent but has now put an offer in on buying his own house. There's a money issue though and I've tried to be fair and patient...on our first date he didn't take his card out to pay, so I did and he later said he liked that I didn't expect him to pay (I didn't tbh but told myself why should the man pay). He paid for our second date in a simple Vietnamese place but I could feel his tension shuffling his cards choosing which one. But he was sweet so we carried on. Our first road trip he drove so I offered petrol money, he accepted and from then on it was clear I'd pay half for petrol. Meals were always split. I spoiled him as I like to on his bday in a lovely restaurant and gifts etc. On my bday he got me a pair of earrings on sale on Etsy which were pretty and took me to a restaurant but tensely said 'is this the kind of place you get starters' so I obviously said no need and only got a cheap main. He told me the other part of my gift was he'd take me for a hike and I wouldn't have to pay half for petrol. He cried a bit the next morning after I was honest after he asked me were the gifts not good and I gently said that petrol thing wasn't really normal. A few weeks later when he said he wanted to see me so would go to his fave Chinese on the way and bring it to mine without offering to get me some I calmly told him I'm struggling with this constant splitting of things, he should trust that I'm not after his money and I took him out to celebrate his new job etc. I am a generous person. To make up for the bday he bought me flowers but mentioned how they're good value in Morrissons, where they were from. Fast forward to this bday coming up in two weeks...I was honestly so nervous about him spoiling it so I booked myself a cottage in Wales for a couple of days and it hurt him but I told him to please not take it personally. My ex husband upset me on my bdays and I could do with a couple of days to myself but really, I know boyfriend isn't good at romance and I couldn't face another awkward meal. Anyway, twice over the last few weeks he has mentioned how he budgeted for my present (a hot water bottle) last month so this month he's budgeting for the meal. He earns £50k and only gives his ex wife the amount the child support calculator asks of him which is around £200 ish per month, he says because she gets children's allowance: not my business but I do think kids cost more and his daughter is autistic so needs therapy. Anyway, he then asked whether I want to go to the restaurants i took him to on my bday, I said, please - you choose. He said 'I'll just take you to the one you took me to'. I said to him, my love, please can we just not do bdays, anniversaries, Xmas (he got me a five pack of socks)...let's free ourselves, there's something awkward/tense with money and its making me uncomfortable, feeling like work/burden. He got very upset and said he couldn't feel more hurt or empty and is now not really talking to me! Its been 2 days. I told him he'd never expressed any kind of excitement about my bday and I just don't want this heaviness. There are just so many money orientated odd things...like he bought me pink salt and I said it was lovely and he said '£1'. I know his ex wife said he was controlling about money but he said she expected him to be the bread winner and was financially abusive: obviously I don't know the full story. It all just feels so awkward and I don't like how he's gone cold. Otherwise he's very affectionate and sweet....not selfish in bed but a bit predictable. Anyway....thoughts?

He's already doing token gifts. Where else is there to go? A packet of polos?

Yes, but...

Some people are good at gifts.

Some people enjoy the gifts giving without much regard for the wishes of the recipient, see how many people talk about themselves as giving "thoughtfull gifts" on MN and than mention something standard, basic or token.
Some people are lazy.
Some tie themselves into knots and produce inconsistent gifts, sometimes ending with something substandard/basic/token.

Agreeing to do chocs&flowers would help with the expectations and potential misspent efforts on both sides.

If he agreed to do chocolate and flowers, he would have to up his budget significantly. What about splitting the cost of petrol for every journey? He's a lost cause.

oh for goodness sake, tying yourself in knots for this man!

oh and flowers from a florist are waaaaaaay nicer than flowers from a supermarket

I’m not tying myself in knots, for anyone, thanks😂. I’m typing a message on a mobile phone. Minimal effort expended. Baffles me the amount of people who come on these things to take offence and issue with other people’s take on something instead of just sharing what they think and moving along😅.

Laurmolonlabe · 11/07/2026 15:29

He shouldn't be that mindful of money on £50k and only £200 maintenance- where does it all go? Sounds to me he is like my brother who always expected his girlfriends to pay for everything and is extremely mean with money- he spends it all on cars and computer games, sounds as if your man is much the same.

Pessismistic · 11/07/2026 16:18

Op he’s done you a favour showing you his true self call it a blip and move on your worth a lot more than that he’s tight and next time don’t introduce to the kids just fyi a lady on here done a Clare’s law on her newest partner turns out he was on the list for something maybe do this before you introduce another guy to your kids.

Plasticdreams · 11/07/2026 16:39

He could well be autistic but so is my partner and he won't let me pay for anything. Every date I would offer and he would refuse point blank, I would say ok then let me get the drinks and his card would already be at the machine before I could tap. I do buy him gifts and pay for smaller things when I can get in there quick enough.

I appreciate not everyone would agree with this, but generosity is very attractive to me - it's one of the reasons I took to him and wanted to spend more time with him. My ex was so controlling with money and would drain my finances at every opportunity. He is still stingy now and doesn't pay what he should towards our children. The lack of generosity, is often across the board in my experience - eg. time and affection..

I think you deserve better..

wellstopdoingitthen · 11/07/2026 18:13

A very unattractive trait. I dated someone like this, lost count of the number of times he ‘left his wallet at home’. He earned twice my salary, both single no dependants.
My dad commented once that “Fred has short arms and long pockets “ when he went to the loo every time it was his round.

I’d send him packing OP.

Werhere · 11/07/2026 18:16

@Midfortiescamb wants a boyfriend. As to the type of person that man is doesn’t seem all that important given this has been going on for 1.5 years. So it’ll just be swept under the carpet and limp on I bet.

But at least @Midfortiescamb will be able to say she’s in a relationship.

bluebirdsandblueskies · 08/07/2026 23:24

Why are women settling for this shit just not to be alone? I don’t get it!

Because we are conditioned to think we need a man, but men like this are far more trouble and angst than they are worth. As others have said, he won't change, but his stinginess will become more and more of a problem

jellyfish798 · 12/07/2026 07:17

Leave him and move on with your life, he sounds stingy, petty and a man child, I was with a similar man for years, it does not get better - free yourself of him x

I am 45 and absolutely have never felt conditioned to need a man. I have loved some wonderful men in my time.
I am now divorced and have been single for 5 years and 🤷‍♀️ if I ever “have a man” again.

SD1978 · 12/07/2026 07:32

It wasn’t her- it’s him. He is stingy and worse doesn’t pay for therapies his children need. He is financially sitting very nicely, and doesn’t care whether his family is or isn’t. He will always be about the pennies and I seriously doubt you’ll find any long term joy with this man.

Gagaandgag · 14/07/2026 23:55

bigboykitty · 09/07/2026 21:36

This is very insulting to people with autism who have social skills and would not dream of behaving in such a pathetic way.

I am not trying to be insulting at all! I am autistic and so is my child!

Gagaandgag · 14/07/2026 23:58

LizandDerekGoals · 10/07/2026 07:16

You cannot go around diagnosing right arseholes as autistic. That is so bloody rude and also inaccurate.

You don’t even know me or my background.

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 15/07/2026 05:35

Dump him. Crying bc you said about the present/petrol - pathetic and probably a manipulation tactic. He deserves to be alone with his purse of loose change and ‘terrifying’ assortment of credit cards.

SpryCat · 17/07/2026 15:04

He’s awkward about buying you gifts because he doesn’t want to waste his money and anything not spent on him is in his eyes a waste. He wants to move in and save his money whilst you pay for everything. I think you should dump him because he will drain you of your resources whilst his money is hidden in the bank gaining interest.

justhereforthecomments25 · 10/07/2026 14:39

To me, it’s reading neurodiverse. The words and actions would annoy me, too, but it seems like it’s coming less from a place of just being tight than genuinely doing something he thinks is positive. If he was just being tight, I don’t think he would tell you the savings he was making or that the flowers were from a supermarket, for example. It sounds like he values carefully planning when it comes to money and getting a bargain - he seems to view these as positive traits which is why he is keen to share details of them with you. The being keen to get you something he enjoys (dinner at a restaurant he likes) also hints at neurodiversity (also daughter’s diagnosis, can run in families). Could you maybe make birthdays more a sentimental gesture than a monetary value thing? He cooks a dish you love rather than going to a restaurant? He plans a hike somewhere new and takes a picnic of all your favourite bits instead of buying you a gift, type of thing? Try to see it as he views gifting in rational terms (i.e. why would you pay extra for flowers from a florist when you can get them cheaper in a supermarket?) rather than the emotional terms in which you (and also I, to be honest!) do. I suppose you just need to decide how big of a deal it is, for you.

Edited

He did offer her a hike with no going halves on the petrol... 🤢The whole sentiment of her post is that being tight with money seems to take priority over doing something nice for her.

Gagaandgag · 14/07/2026 23:58

You don’t even know me or my background.

I don’t think you have to know anything about you to make a simple statement re you cannot diagnose someone as autistic when the sum total of what you know about them is a few comments online from someone who is going through some issues with them? There are no possible secret truths about you that would enable you to make such a diagnosis except that you’re either a long term acquaintance of the man in real life and aware of his actual diagnosis or you’re his specialist doctor, in which case you’re in breach of confidentiality.

chaosmaker · 20/07/2026 09:01

@Midfortiescamb did you dump him yet?

Fionuala · 20/07/2026 13:12

Was thinking if he only boyfriend and not husband he is easy to dump now

Seajaye · 20/07/2026 16:22

You have had some good advice and I think you now know what you must do.
Some of the posts were a bit harsh impling neediness on your for a man on any terms because you have tolerated his shortcomings for 1.5 years. While that isn't necessarily true, the need for some adult companionship should not be undervalued in life, just make sure it's compatible with your values, and that you actually like him, warts and all. A salary of £50k doesn't go far after tax if he is renting and trying to get back on the property ladder, and getting a mortgage to buy a place but it seems his 'warts' are getting to you already which will get worse once it has additional cost of home ownership to contend with. Personality traits are set very early in life and can't been changed easily, if at all. Maybe widen your general friendship group to help.you though this patch. There is a useful publication on the internet called the 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman which I think you should read as I found it helpful myself when you live with someone who speaks a different love language.

Thank you all so much. I ended the relationship. He seemed devastated and ended up sending me a manipulative package with the hot water bottle, framed photo of us, two bars of the chocolate I like, and a cheap copy of a novel we once discussed. He included a bday card written as if he wrote it weeks before my bday (we broke up before my bday). And a note saying he wanted me to have those things and also that he had planned a day out and flowers. Absolute lies because in our hard breaking up conversation he owned that he'd become complacent. He also claimed to have done thinking and said I was right he had a problem from his marriage trauma and was already working on it and to give him another chance. I said no because I don't have capacity and also his behaviour really impacted the erotic side for me. Thank you all very much for setting me straight. I am still recovering my standards after the awful abuse of my marriage. Am enjoying the me time now.

Good for you OP. You were right to throw this one back in the sea. Severe tightness with money tends to demonstrate a bit of a cruel personality deep down I think.

Stationbike · 01/08/2026 14:43

Well done OP.
He's devastated alright.
Devastated that you woke up to what a mean fxxker he is and won't accept it.

Read Women who love too much? By Robin Norwood.

Also Why does he do that? By Lundy Bancroft.

These will help you develop better radar against the many many wankers that are out there.

One quick rule that serves women well, even the tiniest hint of meanness, dump.
It will save so much time and energy.
My grandmother told me that at 16, nearly 5 decades ago.
She wasn't wrong.
