Boyfriend strange with money

Midfortiescamb · 08/07/2026 23:00

My boyfriend is confusing me. Been together about 1.5 years, both 47, divorced. I have three kids, shared custody, he has two who are 15 and 12 and he sees every other weekend. He's lovely with my kids and easy to be around, bit over chatty but fine. He's generally kind and patient and has gotten over pushing us to live together which was driven by the fact that he hates paying rent but has now put an offer in on buying his own house. There's a money issue though and I've tried to be fair and patient...on our first date he didn't take his card out to pay, so I did and he later said he liked that I didn't expect him to pay (I didn't tbh but told myself why should the man pay). He paid for our second date in a simple Vietnamese place but I could feel his tension shuffling his cards choosing which one. But he was sweet so we carried on. Our first road trip he drove so I offered petrol money, he accepted and from then on it was clear I'd pay half for petrol. Meals were always split. I spoiled him as I like to on his bday in a lovely restaurant and gifts etc. On my bday he got me a pair of earrings on sale on Etsy which were pretty and took me to a restaurant but tensely said 'is this the kind of place you get starters' so I obviously said no need and only got a cheap main. He told me the other part of my gift was he'd take me for a hike and I wouldn't have to pay half for petrol. He cried a bit the next morning after I was honest after he asked me were the gifts not good and I gently said that petrol thing wasn't really normal. A few weeks later when he said he wanted to see me so would go to his fave Chinese on the way and bring it to mine without offering to get me some I calmly told him I'm struggling with this constant splitting of things, he should trust that I'm not after his money and I took him out to celebrate his new job etc. I am a generous person. To make up for the bday he bought me flowers but mentioned how they're good value in Morrissons, where they were from. Fast forward to this bday coming up in two weeks...I was honestly so nervous about him spoiling it so I booked myself a cottage in Wales for a couple of days and it hurt him but I told him to please not take it personally. My ex husband upset me on my bdays and I could do with a couple of days to myself but really, I know boyfriend isn't good at romance and I couldn't face another awkward meal. Anyway, twice over the last few weeks he has mentioned how he budgeted for my present (a hot water bottle) last month so this month he's budgeting for the meal. He earns £50k and only gives his ex wife the amount the child support calculator asks of him which is around £200 ish per month, he says because she gets children's allowance: not my business but I do think kids cost more and his daughter is autistic so needs therapy. Anyway, he then asked whether I want to go to the restaurants i took him to on my bday, I said, please - you choose. He said 'I'll just take you to the one you took me to'. I said to him, my love, please can we just not do bdays, anniversaries, Xmas (he got me a five pack of socks)...let's free ourselves, there's something awkward/tense with money and its making me uncomfortable, feeling like work/burden. He got very upset and said he couldn't feel more hurt or empty and is now not really talking to me! Its been 2 days. I told him he'd never expressed any kind of excitement about my bday and I just don't want this heaviness. There are just so many money orientated odd things...like he bought me pink salt and I said it was lovely and he said '£1'. I know his ex wife said he was controlling about money but he said she expected him to be the bread winner and was financially abusive: obviously I don't know the full story. It all just feels so awkward and I don't like how he's gone cold. Otherwise he's very affectionate and sweet....not selfish in bed but a bit predictable. Anyway....thoughts?

There's no need for you to be so rude. I've read it all. Yeah he seems to be tight but why should he and she not pay together? I pay my half with my husband always.

I really don’t think you have read the thread @Sophiecunninghamsfinger

You think it's normal to come over and say "I'll bring a Chinese takeaway - just for me though"?

It's normal to both contribute but most couples who don't live together just roughly take turns so it all works out. They don't mentally invoice for half the fuel for a drive into town.

Very simple answer to this - he is also autistic

This is very insulting to people with autism who have social skills and would not dream of behaving in such a pathetic way.

Did he grow up in a home where money was tight? That sits very deep within and it can be very difficult to get past the instinctive “never spending money on anything but essentials” that you grew up with. Particularly on £50K which doesn’t go at all far these days if he’s buying a house.,

For birthdays, rather than saying you don’t want to celebrate which seems very strong, why not tell him what you want to do and what you’d like as a present. I remember my husband being upset that I didn’t know what to get him - he came from a family that had five times the household income we had growing up, where extravagant gift giving was normal. I don’t come from that, but my home was very loving and thoughtful. I’d have been so upset if he’d just told me not to bother, I wasn’t intentionally getting it wrong. Now I earn a lot and just fling money at it, it seems to satisfy him but to me is desperately shallow.

It may just be that this is too big an issue for you and you need to be with someone who has more money.,

Edited

50k puts him in the top 12% of UK earners. He isn’t poor.
People on modest incomes who aren’t stingy can be very creative with gifts and hospitality. You can give lovely, thoughtful gifts without spending loads of money. This isn’t what he’s doing. He’s stingy and thoughtless.
i grew up in a house where money was very tight and my parents were constantly stressed about it. I haven’t grown up stingy and weird with money. I love giving thoughtful gifts whether expensive or not.
@Midfortiescamb this isn’t going to go well. He offered to not make you pay half the petrol money as part of your birthday present and cried when you said that isn’t normal?! He has a very abnormal view of money and spending that isn’t going to go away.
I was in a relationship with a stingy man who wasn’t nearly as bad as your boyfriend and it was awful. It’s already a significant issue for you, and the only options are to end it or endure it. The latter is likely to make you very unhappy.

Either @Sophiecunninghamsfinger does think this outrageously tight behaviour is normal or…. Didn’t bother to read the thread

He would have been out on the first date for me and I stopped reading after the petrol. Dusty, mean men are a complete turn off! You’ve wasted far too much time. Show him the door.

I didn't say you hadn't read it. I said if this is your takeaway from it, then you haven't understood it, and if this is still the case after 17 pages of people explaining it, it's obviously beyond you. Although, since you now admit that you can see he's tight, that suggests you do understand it but you want to put OP in the wrong somehow by very wrongly suggesting she doesn't want to pay for stuff, which is actually worse.

Go on over to the Binface threads. There's less scope for weaponised misunderstanding on those and at least it'll be funny.

50k salary+kids every other weekend+£200 child maintenance a month doesnt add up. Did he tell you those figures? Hes either lying about how much he earns or about how much CM he's paying.

I went out with someone similar. It started to feel strange so i kept a secret log of how much i was spending vs him...massive difference. He'd come over to mine most nights and just say 'whats for dinner'....like I was his mum! Turns out he had a huge amount of debt. Also he was a massive cheater!

Oh he’s clearly lh(no, child maintwqnce for 2 kids staying eow for someone on 50k is 636 pounds a month

I suspect that’s the issue, he’s a very low earner, even on 24k it would be over 300 a month,

so either he’s paying nothing, and lying, or he’s a very low earner and that’s why he’s tight with money, he has none,

So he's on around 4K give or take, a month. He's paying rent, saving for a house, pays child maintenance, bills, car, food, going out through the month etc. I am on just slightly more and I find it a hard struggle, a lot of the times. Wages stay the same while inflation continues to rise, especially for people paying dead money on rent and increasingly worse mortgage payments.

He sounds broke and anxious about money. At the same time, he is thoughtless and perhaps OCD about money. He needs therapy and to do better. His bragging over cheap items is icky, but it also sounds harmless because he loves a bargain! I love chatting about bargains, but not over gifts. Right convo, wrong situation! Never over gifts. I think you need a very long chat with him and to present him with some online services he can access.

My apologies if I have got his finances incorrect. I went by the 50K a year.

elliej83 · 10/07/2026 08:51

It sounds like most of the time you are splitting the bills? Have you talked to him. About his financial circumstances. £50k doesn't always go that far if you live by yourself - it's £3.3k a month and I imagine he will be paying in to a pension etc on top of that, then he has rent, maintainance, bills etc. Hes also trying to save for the house he's buying I imagine. You also said he was looking which card to choose when you went out, which may suggest he is also trying to pay off debt. He might not be able to afford some of the things you want to do at the moment but if he's a great person it's worth talking to him about his current money situation and how maybe if he does have debt you can spend time together without necessarily having to go to expensive places.

Thank you. He may be autistic, we can’t know, but most autistics I know (self, kids siblings all included) are generous to a fault because they are so desperate to get it right. They are more likely to be manipulated into over-spending or paying where they shouldn’t because they don’t want to make waves.

My DS spent all his bloody savings on a tiffany necklace for his GF’s 18th because I have one that his dad bought me and I never take it off. Was so dismayed by the amount he spent, but also touched by the thought process and how keen he was to treat his girl right. We are now fabricating ways to help him earn money as it came out of his uni savings fund!

Absolutely, this isn’t autism, this is the man’s skint and lying about his earnings. If you earn 50k your child maintwqnce for two kids eow is more than triple that.

Being sensible with money is a good thing. Having a ‘bit of a thing’ for bargains is fine too. Could even be a bit fun. But that’s not what’s happening here - be’s begrudging you for being a cost to him. You deserve better than that.

I don’t think thays it at all. I think he’s skint. And a low earner, so he simply can’t afford it as he’s no money, he’s lying about his earnings.

no one on 5ok pays 200 a month for 2 kids he sees eow. You need to be a very low earner for that. Thays why he’s behaving as he is, he’s no money.

Thank you very much. That means a lot. My children are my world and I have a wonderful career in medicine caring for patients. He just sent me a cold message saying we need to talk but not tonight, I said not for a while thanks! I'm going to focus on my babies and patients. Just sad I introduced them to him and they will need to see another break up.

You are absolutely doing the right thing. It even sounds like the whole "we need to talk" message is on his terms, which says a lot. I once dated someone who was like that, and it felt really controlling.
I'd honestly go as far as blocking him, removing him from social media and putting it down to experience. Better things are ahead for you. With or without a man, you come across as someone anyone would be lucky to have in their life.
Most importantly, enjoy your birthday! Go and treat yourself to something you've always wanted but have been hesitant to buy yourself. You deserve to celebrate you.
