Boyfriend strange with money

Midfortiescamb · 08/07/2026 23:00

My boyfriend is confusing me. Been together about 1.5 years, both 47, divorced. I have three kids, shared custody, he has two who are 15 and 12 and he sees every other weekend. He's lovely with my kids and easy to be around, bit over chatty but fine. He's generally kind and patient and has gotten over pushing us to live together which was driven by the fact that he hates paying rent but has now put an offer in on buying his own house. There's a money issue though and I've tried to be fair and patient...on our first date he didn't take his card out to pay, so I did and he later said he liked that I didn't expect him to pay (I didn't tbh but told myself why should the man pay). He paid for our second date in a simple Vietnamese place but I could feel his tension shuffling his cards choosing which one. But he was sweet so we carried on. Our first road trip he drove so I offered petrol money, he accepted and from then on it was clear I'd pay half for petrol. Meals were always split. I spoiled him as I like to on his bday in a lovely restaurant and gifts etc. On my bday he got me a pair of earrings on sale on Etsy which were pretty and took me to a restaurant but tensely said 'is this the kind of place you get starters' so I obviously said no need and only got a cheap main. He told me the other part of my gift was he'd take me for a hike and I wouldn't have to pay half for petrol. He cried a bit the next morning after I was honest after he asked me were the gifts not good and I gently said that petrol thing wasn't really normal. A few weeks later when he said he wanted to see me so would go to his fave Chinese on the way and bring it to mine without offering to get me some I calmly told him I'm struggling with this constant splitting of things, he should trust that I'm not after his money and I took him out to celebrate his new job etc. I am a generous person. To make up for the bday he bought me flowers but mentioned how they're good value in Morrissons, where they were from. Fast forward to this bday coming up in two weeks...I was honestly so nervous about him spoiling it so I booked myself a cottage in Wales for a couple of days and it hurt him but I told him to please not take it personally. My ex husband upset me on my bdays and I could do with a couple of days to myself but really, I know boyfriend isn't good at romance and I couldn't face another awkward meal. Anyway, twice over the last few weeks he has mentioned how he budgeted for my present (a hot water bottle) last month so this month he's budgeting for the meal. He earns £50k and only gives his ex wife the amount the child support calculator asks of him which is around £200 ish per month, he says because she gets children's allowance: not my business but I do think kids cost more and his daughter is autistic so needs therapy. Anyway, he then asked whether I want to go to the restaurants i took him to on my bday, I said, please - you choose. He said 'I'll just take you to the one you took me to'. I said to him, my love, please can we just not do bdays, anniversaries, Xmas (he got me a five pack of socks)...let's free ourselves, there's something awkward/tense with money and its making me uncomfortable, feeling like work/burden. He got very upset and said he couldn't feel more hurt or empty and is now not really talking to me! Its been 2 days. I told him he'd never expressed any kind of excitement about my bday and I just don't want this heaviness. There are just so many money orientated odd things...like he bought me pink salt and I said it was lovely and he said '£1'. I know his ex wife said he was controlling about money but he said she expected him to be the bread winner and was financially abusive: obviously I don't know the full story. It all just feels so awkward and I don't like how he's gone cold. Otherwise he's very affectionate and sweet....not selfish in bed but a bit predictable. Anyway....thoughts?

Think the only thing strange about this thread is the title of it! OP, your boyfriend is not strange with money, he is TIGHT with money! I don’t know how you can be with someone who mentions money allllllll the time like this!

To me, it’s reading neurodiverse. The words and actions would annoy me, too, but it seems like it’s coming less from a place of just being tight than genuinely doing something he thinks is positive. If he was just being tight, I don’t think he would tell you the savings he was making or that the flowers were from a supermarket, for example. It sounds like he values carefully planning when it comes to money and getting a bargain - he seems to view these as positive traits which is why he is keen to share details of them with you. The being keen to get you something he enjoys (dinner at a restaurant he likes) also hints at neurodiversity (also daughter’s diagnosis, can run in families). Could you maybe make birthdays more a sentimental gesture than a monetary value thing? He cooks a dish you love rather than going to a restaurant? He plans a hike somewhere new and takes a picnic of all your favourite bits instead of buying you a gift, type of thing? Try to see it as he views gifting in rational terms (i.e. why would you pay extra for flowers from a florist when you can get them cheaper in a supermarket?) rather than the emotional terms in which you (and also I, to be honest!) do. I suppose you just need to decide how big of a deal it is, for you.

Really? To me it reads as a man who is skint and lying about his income, as again,no one on 5ok pays 200 a month child maintenance for two kids when he sees them eow. The min is triple that.

based on that indisputable fact then the simplest answer is he’s a broke low earner and he behaves like this as he has no money.

If he was just being tight, I don’t think he would tell you the savings he was making or that the flowers were from a supermarket, for example.

Tight people often do this. Their greatest joy is not spending money and some of them delight in telling you how they managed it in the same way some people enjoy telling you how they found a good purchase.

As do skint people. What’s your point.

That the fact he said it doesn't mean he's not being tight. It wasn't hard to understand.

Owl55 · 10/07/2026 16:52

Dump him , mean people with money don’t change , mean with money , mean with their love!Itll get worse as he gets older!!

Happytorepeatmyself · 10/07/2026 17:59

I’d be embarrassed with myself if I’d sucked this up for 18 months. And would hate the thought that my kids were watching and thinking “really? This is the type of man that mum wants to be with?”

HereWeGo1234 · 10/07/2026 18:31

Your title is ‘boyfriend strange with money’. He’s not strange with money, he is MEAN with money. Everything is (and always will be) pre-thought and calculated and it will never change and the meanness seeps into every aspect of life.

I have known a couple of people down through the years who are also mean with money and please trust me - they don’t change.

Please do yourself a favour and get rid of him-you and your family deserve so much more.

Tuesdayschild50 · 10/07/2026 18:36

I think if you like spoil and are generous he obviously isn't you will always run into awkwardness.
Its unattractive.

Sheepsmellnice · 10/07/2026 18:36

He sounds proper tight I would just get rid of him as soon as you can. Imagine if you moved in together how many times would he expect you to reuse a tea bag ?
I would get rid and move on.

Happyjoe · 10/07/2026 18:50

Have you spoken to him yet?! @Midfortiescamb
Hope all goes well.

ThatLemonBee · 10/07/2026 18:59

You say his daughter is autistic , why chance he is too ?

Hollybollyhughes · 10/07/2026 19:15

Are there other issues, gambling? Tight arse isn't a good trait. If he cant afford then make an effort in other, thoughtful ways. Ask him and have an straight discussion as to why he behaves like this. My brother in law has money up to his eye balls. Never gets a round in, like f in Scrooge. Worries about being poor, like that's going to happen.

MaddestGranny · 10/07/2026 19:23

I haven't read the whole thread, but I've read quite a lot of it. Clearly, the BF needs to go. He's a sorry waste of space. What a jerk. He is just not good enough for you, OP.

You, however, @Midfortiescamb, sound absolutely lovely. You mention having previously extricated yourself from an abusive ex(notD)H & that you're currently in therapy. Bloody well done for getting this far.

You've given current BF so much leeway, benefit of the doubt, space to show to you that he's not a mingey creep. He's failed. He's had enough rope & he's hanged himself. Oh well. Oh dear. Never mind. Next.
Please, dear OP, do value yourself. You are clearly highly competent and able, and a compassionate, funny and lovely person. Carry on working with your therapist. Launch yourself into your own new life. Maybe with A.N.Other. Maybe not. But on your own terms. Authentically, clearly, happy on your own terms.
Good luck and love.

Each to their own, that’s why we’re both contributing in a forum where lots of people share their varying perspectives on a situation. You’re perfectly able to share yours without having a pop at anyone else’s🤗😅.

Your view completely ignores how he is with his finances and his children

Not enough energy to spend a Friday night arguing with strangers about their opinion on my opinion on an internet post from another stranger in which they ask for lots of different people’s opinions, enjoy yours, thanks!✌🏼😂

Not just a hike: I didn't have to pay half for petrol that time or petrol station lunch! I just don't get why he wept when I told him it was shit.

The tears are interesting. So its more than being a tightwad. Not your problem to unspool though , unless he is willing to look deeper in order to maintain your relationship.

So yeah
you completely ignore his approach to finances in relation to his own children
enjoy your evening

GaIadriel · 10/07/2026 21:09

I think he's probs just a miser as people say. However, nobody is ever complaining about women not paying the bill. Either we want equality or it's just picking and choosing when it suits. If men have to pay for everything then it feeds into the narrative they should earn more.

RaspberryRiddle · 10/07/2026 21:29

Midfortiescamb · 08/07/2026 23:16

It does feel very literal and autistic. He often puts his foot in it by being super blunt/honest eg 'your house smells' and can otherwise be so sweet. It's so confusing.

It's not an excuse for this behaviour but it does sound like he's on the spectrum (especially if his daughter is). He won't change so you have to work out if you can live with this. My advice would be to get out now before you get in too deep...💐

oh for goodness sake, tying yourself in knots for this man!

Wickedlittledancer · 10/07/2026 12:34

I don’t think thays it at all. I think he’s skint. And a low earner, so he simply can’t afford it as he’s no money, he’s lying about his earnings.

no one on 5ok pays 200 a month for 2 kids he sees eow. You need to be a very low earner for that. Thays why he’s behaving as he is, he’s no money.

Really valid take. But as someone who is quite skint themselves at the moment, a lot of the behaviour I just can’t relate to. Everyone is different of course. But, for example, I wouldn’t have mentioned not paying half in petrol money to the hike. Unless he is broke but is just dealing with it really badly, I guess a genuine possibility given some men’s weird behaviour!
