H ‘gone fishing’

Muggymcmug · 19/11/2025 18:32

H disappeared first thing this morning muttering something about going fishing. By the afternoon I tried to call then sent a message to remind him of something we had on in a couple of hours. Eventually responded to say that he was going to be night fishing & would be back in the morning. In this weather.

On a scale of 1-absolute bullshit, he’s a massive liar isn’t he?! There has been infidelity which he would swear is over.

What kind of angler is he op? If he's a carper then I quite believe it, they are due their big winter feed when the temp falls......I spent 9 hours fishing at the weekend (although I'm not a carper who night fishes) but if I didnt work then id be out all day in this wonderful cold snap!

My dad was a national champion angler, absolutely obsessed with it and fished in much of his spare time all my life. He never did 24 hour stints!

And doing all day and then the night in this weather is really not credible.

ApplebyArrows · 20/11/2025 08:59

I have seen several men fishing in our local river in the last week - more than are usually there actually! - though not sure if they are still there now the colder turn has arrived.

Thank you, @RedTagAlan . I knew nothing about fishing before. So interesting.
When you do sea fishing, do you go out on a boat or do it from a pier?

My DH has just left to go fishing, from a pebble beach. He often goes to this spot.

He has being talking about it for days, waiting for calm weather (the fish don't bite if the sea is too rough), and spent hours preparing.
He has multiple layers of specialist warm clothing, but even so I worry about him getting cold - he will essentially be sitting in a freezing wind for hours.

@Muggymcmug I'm so sorry. No-one goes fishing in trainers in this weather.

Butchyrestingface · 20/11/2025 09:06

Given that's he's making no real effort to hide his shady going-ons, I'd probably assume there's been some kind of emergency with his other family and he's needed on hand.

Get rid.

You must be, it's absolutely bitter out there.

Loveapineapplepizzame · 20/11/2025 09:11

Christ it got down to minus 4 here overnight. Sorry OP as others have said, there’s no way he’s out fishing overnight in trainers.

I took our dog out for her usual 4 mile run lastnight and I was back in after 2 miles - way too cold.

The “emergency” is biting her leg.

Tighteningmybelt · 20/11/2025 09:13

I hope you’re okay OP

Do you mean pulling her leg? I'm not familiar with the expression biting one's leg.

zingally · 20/11/2025 09:20

Any update OP? So sorry you're having to deal with this utter stupidity.

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 20/11/2025 09:22

I know lots of people that fish all year round but ime fishing is one of those hobbies that requires preparation and men who fish are usually spend a long time preparing for, and talking about, their outings!

Hope you’re okay, op. It doesn’t sound great.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 20/11/2025 09:29

OP - you absolutely can leave if you need to, and it sounds like you might. Now's the time if you are about to end the contract on your current rental - easier to do it now than having to get out of a marriage AND a lease shortly down the line. It'll be easier without him. Been there, done that.

cinquanta · 20/11/2025 09:33

Genuine fishing was enough for me to end a relationship. No cheating involved.

N0Tfunny · 20/11/2025 09:34

Muggymcmug · 19/11/2025 19:51

Would have to get out of the house we’re in within a couple of months. Ignoring the massive competition for rentals, I wouldn’t be able to afford it. Wouldn’t be eligible for council help.
Ignoring the homelessness - I would be absolutely fine looking after the kids by myself, I do anyway. The thought of him being left alone to look after them fills me with absolute dread though

These guys never want their kids. Especially pre schoolers who are a lot of work.

he will make a lot of noise about 50:50, then have then one Saturday afternoon at his mums , then stop seeing them. Unless you invite him over to your place to see them and cook his dinner.

Lola234456 · 20/11/2025 09:34

Sorry but absolutely cheating, are you sure she ain't giving birth way he ran off? I'm serious btw

Mine was "going for a walk", he then used to walk up the road where OW picked him up and they went and sat in McDonalds! i find it hilarious now

Stay classy!!!

He has been night fishing in the past, although only in the summer. He’s also prone to doing what he wants. I would feel concerned about him being out in this weather, if I actually thought he was.

He’s off work on leave this week

Is he back yet?
He must think you're stupid.

LeedsLoiner · 20/11/2025 09:43

"Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you'll never see him at weekends..."

I do not wish to explain the idiom on a family message board.

🤣 What I've taken from this thread is that anglers are mad!

Assume you cook and eat your catch?

You're not allowed. And pike is fucking disgusting!

smallsilvercloud · 20/11/2025 09:53

I think him coming back home will be telling, turning up like he’s actually spent all day and night in freezing weather camping, looking unkempt and a car full of camping and fishing stuff.
The fact that he just went off when you had other plans, says he is not a good partner to you anyway, don’t feel you need to find proof of another woman to end it.

StewkeyBlue · 20/11/2025 09:57

You must know if his fishing chair, massive amount of gear etc has been taken?

Really sorry OP, it’s a wretched feeling.

Go and see a solicitor and see what you would be entitled to in a split, ditto CAB or similar and see what support you could get as a single parent.

Knowledge is power.

Different types of angling though. National champ indicates a match angler. Matches are usually 4 hours.

The carp folk will go for a week at a time.

EuclidianGeometryFan · 20/11/2025 10:01

Just to clarify for the thread - you are allowed to keep what you eat from sea fishing. You can sea-fish all year round (though some seasons are better than others, depending what species you want). It is common to go sea fishing overnight.

Yes, but with fishing bed, little tent / bivy shelter, stove, ridge monkey, cooler, heated boots, etc etc plus actual fishing paraphernalia, crates of stuff on a trolley.
