Turning up 30 minutes late

OP posts:
TwistedWonder · 16/08/2025 20:41

He turned up 20 minutes late to a 3pm coffee date wearing a suit and tie complete with pocket handkerchief then scolded me for having a small spritzer and driving.

Or the one who turned up looking like he’d slept in a skip and his first comment was - wow you’re overdressed for a pub date! I was wearing a midi dress and trainers

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 16/08/2025 20:54

Date arranged through a dating site so hadn’t met. I thought we agreed to meet outside a restaurant, he thought inside.. I waited outside (at a bus stop) for about half an hour then braved going in to check. He was in the middle of a meal as thought I wasn’t coming and soon made his excuses and left! That was about 25 years ago and I still think of it when I go past there!

Mydahliasareshit · 16/08/2025 21:02

He had booked a restaurant in Knightsbridge where they tie a plastic bib around you on arrival because it's messy. I would have probably really enjoyed it for a third date once I'd got to know anything about him. He thought it was the best thing ever, and kept saying isn't it FUN! He was a nice chap and keen but I couldn't get over the crassness rather than a gentle introduction over a drink. Who knows, I might have married him if he hadn't done that. He was a plumber so probably had a very nice life and no shortage of dates!

Ceebeegee · 16/08/2025 21:07

I arrived at a date with a guy I met in a nightclub a few nights prior. Unfortunately I must have had severe beer goggles on when I agreed to the date- he was in his mid 30s (i was 19), not very attractive, bad teeth - i got the ick immediately, a very bad start. I made excuses to cut the date short.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 16/08/2025 21:08

He turned up late in a stained, ripped t-shirt.
It did not get better.

shellyleppard · 16/08/2025 21:10

@imnotwhoyouthinkiam ewww 🤢

Cinema date in 1978 to watch Saturday Night Fever. He turned up wearing the full John Travolta white suit black shirt and medal!!
Didn’t even realise til I saw the film (which he’d already seen 3 times) just thought he was over dressed. Mortifying.

Reminds me of the date I had where the guy was dressed like Luke Skywalker. We weren't seeing Star Wars (we were seeing the first Mission Impossible film), he just liked the outfit.

I told him I preferred Han Solo and left.

Chelsea26 · 16/08/2025 21:53

I went on a first date with a guy I’d fancied for YEARS. I spilled my first drink over the table, my second over him and then dropped my dinner in my lap!

We went out for quite some time and are still friends now but it was mortifying!

OverlyFragrant · 16/08/2025 21:56

He was 20 minutes late, so I treated myself to a pint and packet of peanuts. He scolded me for eating peanuts in case my date had a nut allergy. I asked if he had a nut allergy, the answer was no 🖕

Another one, and Italian guy, definitely not 6ft, more like 5ft3. I'm 5ft4 and was taller than him. He said I was not fat enough.

NewDogOwner · 16/08/2025 22:00

I met a hot guy at a Halloween night at a cool club. He was a student and a burgeoing DJ. He didn't have enough money to pay for two drinks at the pub we met in and the barmaid had to take pit on him and just give him the drinks.

Turning up 30 minutes late

He text me on the night to ask me to meet him outside a sex shop in soho. No other explanation. and then was annoyed when I said it wasn’t up for that.
surprise (not) - he was entirely selfish and had no empathy or insight.

This is undeniably a you problem. Your date sounds fun and lovely. You, quite uptight. He himself might have been unaware about the bib thing and took it in his stride but you were weird about it. You could have laughed about it and bonded over it but you blamed him instead. I dont think he was in the wrong here

That reminds me of a date many years ago (around 1989 I think) I met a guy in a local bar and he invited me to meet him a few days later to go to a karaoke night. Back then I had no idea what karaoke was and we didn’t have Google 😂
So I met him outside the station and he bowled up wearing a white blazer and flared trousers and no shirt! I also think he was out of his nut on some substance.

Against my better judgement I went to the karaoke night with him which went ok until he came back from the loo and had obviously had a line - he was absolutely wired! He then got on the karaoke machine and put on a performance of Addicted To Love like he was at Wembley. Swinging the mike between his legs, holding it out to the ‘crowd’ to join the chorus and finally dropping his trousers.

I went to the ladies and did a runner 😂😂

2 decades ago.

Met a guy for dinner who id been talking to for quote a while (on mingleville haha) and had seen once or twice on nights out.

He straight up offered me cocaine before the waitress has taken a drinks order. Safe to say, we were not compatible. To each their own, not for me thanks, bot before, or after drinks.

I sometimes wonder what hes up to now haha.

Mummyto3ginismyfriend · 16/08/2025 22:15

Met on a dating site.
He wanted a walk and a cup of tea somewhere. I thought that was sweet and casual.
He turned up with a tag on and it had to be an afternoon date as he had a curfew!

TomatoSandwiches · 16/08/2025 22:20

Turned up with lots of valentines style gifts in a Tesco bag and shoved a red teddy bear that smelt of wee into my hands before even saying hello.

brutali · 16/08/2025 22:22

Met a man in a nightclub and we swapped numbers but we were both pretty drunk. Arranged to meet up and as I approached his car he got out to greet me and he was very very short and wearing a belt with his name emblazoned on it in big letters. We had planned to go for a meal but I managed to convince him that that could be for the second date and we should just go for a short drive and then once back home I ran and never looked back!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 16/08/2025 22:24

Just two minutes in the guy said 'you're not feeling it are you?' Admittedly I wasn't, but it put me completely on the spot. I wasn't very confident but wanted to be honest so I said not really. Guy became agitated and I wanted to leave but was too anxious and polite. It was a horrible date. I told him I needed to get the bus home whereas in fact my house was in walking distance. He walked me to the bus stop, I got on the first bus that turned up and jumped off a few streets away. He texted the following day to thank me for staying for the lunch but luckily i heard no more from him after that. I was a very shy 20 something then and didn't feel able to be assertive.

OverlyFragrant · 16/08/2025 22:25

Oh and I forgot the guy that turned up with his dog to a cafe date, let the dog off lead (in the cafe!!) Where it caused absolute carnage begging for food from everyone, jumped into an empty pushchair which crashed into a table, and then wandered off into the kitchen before a very angry staff member came over and told us off!!
I was so incredibly embarrassed and it put me right off him. Didn't even say goodbye.

MyDeftHedgehog · 16/08/2025 22:31

Blind date. I was about 25, him about 10 years older. He looked like Michael Fish the weather man 😅 (no offence Michael)
I just wasn't into greying, moustached, balding men. He was a lovely guy although the "date" was very awkward.
That said, 40 years later we are still friends 😀

TwistedWonder · 16/08/2025 22:33

Not me but a friend - met a guy for a walk before going for food. After walking for 20 minutes or so, she said there’s a nice pub on the next corner we can get lunch. He replied ‘oh I wasn’t planning on spending that much, there’s a pie shop over there let’s get a pasty. He then bought a meat pie and sat on a bench eating it out of a paper bag!

Hiiufjn · 16/08/2025 22:42

This date is etched into my memory for being so bizarre.
Met in a bar for a drink. He hardly said a word but stared at me intensely whenever I looked away, but couldn't make eye contact when I looked at him. It started feeling really awkward and he kept staring at me each time I looked away. It was starting to irritate me. So when he did it the next time I swivelled my eyes back to him, he jumped and knocked his wine over the table, leaped up saying "Fuck!!" and walked out, that was the end of that! He was such an oddball.

HangingOver · 16/08/2025 22:43

I was an hour late due to tube chaos and he had done four lines by the time I got there 🤣

Angelchick1971 · 16/08/2025 23:05

First date(and last!) I stepped in to help a young girl whose very older bf was threatening her(i put her in a taxi home and called the police) My date said i was "too aggressive for a woman" and "shouldn't get involved" then flounced off leaving me on my own 20 miles from home at 11pm at night. What a man(not!) 🤣🤣
