Drinking in the morning - everyone does it, right?

Even when they have young kids?
Totally normal yes?

Well he's just told me to ask around. Don't fancy asking my friends so here we are
I'm being told this is totally normal and everyone does it, so why shouldn't he.

mummywantstobeslim · 07/03/2021 20:45

No that's not at all normal

MmeLaraque · 07/03/2021 20:50

No. It's not normal. Drinking water/fruit juie/tea/cofffee first thing? Normal.

Drinking alcohol when one wakes? No. Not remotely normal.

Even at lunch, alcohol is rare. Dinner (past 6pm, usually 8-9pm): a glass of wine with dinner. Mind you, in French culture, drinking alcohol without foood is considered a sign of mental illness. Which explains a lot about why Brits abroad getting drunk aren't appreciated. Then again, in France, the default is that presenting self in public in manifestly drunk state is not legal.

meetmeinarizona · 07/03/2021 20:50

I used to do this, but I'm an alcoholic. The exact reason I reached out for help is because I started drinking in the morning around my child. It's one thing drinking at night when she was sleeping and none the wiser but a totally different kettle of fish doing it in front of them. So no, not normal and I would suggest he gets some help.

monstermissy · 07/03/2021 20:51

Yeah my alcoholic ex did it all the time 🙄 it's grim! He used to take it to work in a Coke bottle... everything that came out of his mouth was a lie!

meetmeinarizona · 07/03/2021 20:51

Just to say I don't do this now, I got help and am 18 months sober

feistyoneyouare · 07/03/2021 20:55

Late morning on holiday every now and then/Christmas Day is fine imho.

But not as an everyday thing or around kids.

Sorry this is happening, OP.

Peace43 · 07/03/2021 21:12

Buck’s Fizz on Xmas morning or possibly an oddly timed drink due to jet lag when I’m travelling other than that never before lunchtime and then only very rarely and only one glass.

cato75 · 07/03/2021 21:25

'Your friends are alcoholics if they are drinking alcohol regularly (weekly is regularly) before lunchtime.*'
*
What a bizarre comment.

Totallyfedup1979 · 07/03/2021 21:33

Totally normal. What type of parent doesn’t start the day off with two fingers of whisky and a bottle of cider? What sort of parent stays sober enough to take care of their family? Hmm
Perhaps you could also ask SS?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 07/03/2021 21:40

Tea or orange juice yes normal , alcohol not normal in the morning unless xmas day or maybe in holiday might have an earlier drink than normal

harknesswitch · 07/03/2021 21:43

I like a drink and probably drink a bit too much in the weekend, but 9.30 or 11.30 is way too early for me.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 07/03/2021 21:46

@MNWorldisCrazy people having a glass of wine whilst cooking roast pre lunchtime doesn't make them an alcoholic for all you know that may be the once a week time they drink and maybe just the one glass

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 07/03/2021 21:48

I guess op he isn't just drinking on a sun morning and at other times as well ?

grapewine · 07/03/2021 21:49

Your friends are alcoholics if they are drinking alcohol regularly (weekly is regularly) before lunchtime

That's just silly. Lots of people have a drink while cooking. It doesn't make them addicts.

Frannibananni · 07/03/2021 21:50

It was normal For me when I was at the worst of my drinking problem. But then a lot of other shitty behaviour was normal for me too.

Saracen · 07/03/2021 21:57

I think about this occasionally. I only rarely have a drink, maybe one drink a fortnight. Sometimes I fancy one in the morning. But I never do. It is just taboo, and I think it is widely considered to be proof that someone has a serious drinking problem.

Just a few exceptions, such as hair of the dog in the late morning to try to cure a hangover, or champagne brunch. People have Bloody Marys for a New Years Day brunch don't they? Or May morning.

So I vote no, not normal, you'd need a really good reason to have alcohol before noon.

fedup078 · 07/03/2021 22:00

And yet it's me sleeping on the sofa tonight Hmm

Babygotblueyes · 07/03/2021 22:08

@fedup078

Mil is coming for the dc now I'll update later Needless to say it looks like it is over No it's not the first time He does have a problem It's obviously more important than his family and I can't be complicit in it anymore so he needs to go.
Look after yourself @fedup078 - hope it goes well for you and the dc.
pickingdaisies · 07/03/2021 22:08

What does mil make of it all, does she know what the "talk" was about?

Libraryghost · 07/03/2021 22:10

He is an alcohol dependent Trouble is they are always the last to admit it. They will gaslight you, tell you are being boring, everyone does it, they can take it or leave it.. blah blah. Sadly until they face up to it there is no hope of recovery. Ask any child what their life was growing up with an alcoholic and they will tell you - it’s hell. You cannot fix this - you cannot change him. Only he can do that. Think very carefully what you do next because this will impact your children’s life more than you know. I am so sorry this is happening to you, take care.

Libraryghost · 07/03/2021 22:11

@meetmeinarizona

Just to say I don't do this now, I got help and am 18 months sober
Well done - you should be very proud x
fedup078 · 07/03/2021 22:12

@Libraryghost actually I do know because I was that child which is probably why I've put up with more than most people would from him
That's why I'm ending it now while dc too young to remember anything

OP posts:
Mondaymanic · 07/03/2021 22:21

No. For context me and my friends are a group who love a drink (socially only).
The only time in my life I've drank in the morning was when it was shoved down my throat in ibiza aged 20 something Blush
100% not normal

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/03/2021 22:30

Maybe a glass of wine at a lunch out with friends, but even that would be 1ish. I have a glass of wine most evenings tbh, but the idea of it in the morning, nope.
