How long were you together before you got engaged?

Disclosure - I do not want my DP to propose or to be engaged yet but I'm just wondering what the average relationship length is before you get engaged? My parents were engaged 4 months after meeting each other ( which I know is unusual) and I've been with DP for 4 years and no ring is on either of our horizons right now.

Engaged after 7 years. Booked our wedding soon after, but far in advance. Managed to squeeze in a baby in between. We've been together 10 years now and get married 3 weeks tomorrow!

mylittlephoney · 09/03/2017 23:16

6 weeks and married after 5 years. Together 22.

Owlzes · 09/03/2017 23:31

13 years Smile

We didn't see marriage as a priority for a long time. It was only when we decided to have kids we figured it made sense for the legal protection and we fancied an excuse for a nice holiday.

But we knew we'd be together for the rest of our lives after a week. Apparently we're just lazy when it comes to arranging the paperwork. Blush

Engaged after 4 years, got married a year later. It was the right time for us, we weren't in a rush and we had various family/visa/study things to deal with earlier so trying to sort out a wedding would have been stressful on top. We didn't live together until we got married.

2 weeks, married 6 months later, 30th anniversary this year!

Nonagoninfinity · 10/03/2017 06:25

We were 13 years too! We met in 6th form and our only experience of weddings were ridiculously stressful events and we felt it was all an unnecessary drama. We got swept up in life, bought a flat etc before we realised that if we took control and ignored 'the wedding rules' then we could actually have a fun and relaxing day (which it was!). That was 10 years ago now!

Eight years! And he was so nervous I thought he was going to break up with me. Engaged for one, married for three now.

Phantommagic · 10/03/2017 06:38

Interesting how many quick engagements have led to long marriages. We did it and I remember even waiting 5 months seemed ages because we'd talked about it from week 3. Seems odd to make such a big decision so quickly when I look back.

DingyDillDong · 10/03/2017 06:49

DH proposed to me on our first date, and again on our four month anniversary (Blush we don't celebrate monthly anniversaries but he was my first real boyfriend who I actually loved so was excited about everything!) I laughed it off but he told me later that although it was a joke, something made him realise that he wanted to marry me on that first night.

It took another four years however before he did an actual proposal though but I had only just turned 20'when we first got together. It then took another three years for us to get married and we've been married for three years this summer.

CPtart · 10/03/2017 07:03

Nine years. We met aged 20 and didn't want to wed until late 20's so no point in getting engaged any earlier IMO. Engagement =setting a wedding date. Also, why risk us splitting up (was highly likely so young), and a failed engagement, that would make it farcical.

wejammin · 10/03/2017 07:08

First date aged 17, engaged 8 years later, married 2 years after that, now been married nearly 6 years and have 2 DC

hairypaws · 10/03/2017 07:14

We had been together 3 months when he proposed. Married 18 months later and have been together 19 years.

Mcnorton · 10/03/2017 07:16

Moved in together after 4 months, married after 11 years (decided after 10 i suppose though we didn't really get engaged). Together 20 years. We were put off by the wedding stuff, just wanted to sign a bit of paper and have it over and done with. Eventually we had a tiny ceremony that was agony but it's all over now!

2gorgeousboys · 10/03/2017 07:29

We got engaged after 17 months (although at that point we already had a baby and a house together!). We've now been together 18 years and married for 15 years.

Dinnerout1 · 10/03/2017 10:39

Was proposed 2 months into relationship, didn't have the money to buy a ring which was fine by me and I said yes. We were together for a year and a half and I got a ring and then 1 year after that we got married. Happily married for 17 years.

ShowMeWhatYouGot · 10/03/2017 11:56

5 years, but we met very young.
