How long were you together before you got engaged?

Disclosure - I do not want my DP to propose or to be engaged yet but I'm just wondering what the average relationship length is before you get engaged? My parents were engaged 4 months after meeting each other ( which I know is unusual) and I've been with DP for 4 years and no ring is on either of our horizons right now.
How long were you with your DP before you got engaged ?

We got engaged around 11 months after getting together, got married 25 months after getting together. Married 5 years this year. 1 DC. We've been together 7 years, known each other 10. According to our friends our getting together was inevitable from the day we met, we just didn't see it yet. We are the only people willing to put up with each others crap!

Got engaged after one year together and we get married in May! I cant wait! x

RebeccaCloud9 · 08/03/2017 16:33

Been together 12 years and still waiting.

Very much enjoying this thread and have name changed to join.
DP mentioned marriage after two months and actually asked me after 4months. Neither of us are Spring chickens he is a widower and I will shortly be divorced ( separated for 5 years). He asked me in January and for various reasons no one in RL knows yet.
We are both very certain that this is right for us, but are not certain friends and family will understand. Having loved and lost in our own ways we both quickly recognised that we fitted together.

Five years

BertNErnie · 08/03/2017 16:38

Engaged after 1 house bought and renovated and two small folk born. We had been together 11 years at that point.

It was our 16 year anniversary last month and we still haven't set a date for the wedding....eeeek!

ohmygodyouguys · 08/03/2017 16:39

Five and a half years. Took another three years to get married after that!

SuperFlyHigh · 08/03/2017 16:39

At 21 with him being in army and me at home (so we met up when he was on leave etc) after 9 months we got engaged.

Unsurprisingly after being together 2 years in total I broke off the engagement for a variety of reasons.

shockedballoon · 08/03/2017 16:42

Together 21 years, married for 10. He decided to propose for our 10th anniversary as I'd suggested throwing a party for it Grin

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/03/2017 16:42

Technically he asked me to marry him after a week, he gave me a ring 3 months later. We got married last January just over 6.5 years & 4 dc later.

RegTheMonkey1 · 08/03/2017 16:48

Met in March, engaged in August, married in October - all in the same year.

n0ne · 08/03/2017 16:49

6 blinking years. He 'didn't see the point' in marriage until DD came along.

MewlingQuim · 08/03/2017 16:51

9 years Grin

sofato5miles · 08/03/2017 16:55

Got engaged after 20 months, married 4 months later. 13 years ago.

2catsandadog · 08/03/2017 16:55

6.5 years. Married after 8. Still married 14 years later.

StickyMouse · 08/03/2017 16:55

3.5 years before engagement, 5 years married this year.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 08/03/2017 17:00

We had been together 5 years when we got engaged. I was 8 months pregnant with DD1! I wanted to get engaged after about 3 years and used to huff about it, but DH's parents split when he was a young adult and it kind of ruined his ideas about marriage for a bit. DD1 was planned though, as we both felt having children together was a bigger commitment than getting married. Then for some reason he got all sentimental when I was massively pregnant and asked me Smile we've been married for almost two years and now have another DD.

PollytheDolly · 08/03/2017 17:03

DH 18 months then married a year later.

ExH 3 months and married for 21.

So no theory there lol.

daydream86 · 08/03/2017 17:09

nearly 8 years!! had lots of fun travelling and bought a house in that time. I think our families had lost hope but weve just done things at our own pace! He proposed although it wasn't entirely unexpected as we'd pretty much decided we were going to get married, a proposal
and ring was just a nice formality! I fell pregnant 3 weeks later and we had to postpone a wedding til after so well finally be married next March when our baby is 18months old, 2 weeks after our 10th anniversary together Smile

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 08/03/2017 17:14

First DH, he proposed after 8 weeks and we got engaged officially after 5 months, married 4 years later and were happy until his death 8 years after that...
Second ( and final !!!!!) DH, engaged after 18 months ( but had been speaking of our future from about 2 months in) , married 18 months after that and have been together 10 years this year....

minipie · 08/03/2017 17:17

7.5 years before getting engaged (but we got together pretty young)

MorrisZapp · 08/03/2017 17:21

Been with DP 18 years. No engagement or marriage here.

treaclesoda · 08/03/2017 17:22

We got engaged after five years.

Catra · 08/03/2017 17:22

First time around 2 weeks!! Needless to say that didn't work out.

Was with DH for just under 3 years when he proposed. Got married just over a year after that.

Alpanini · 08/03/2017 17:22

Engaged after 4 years. Wanted to get house sorted first as saw a mortgage as a bigger commitment. Felt like we knew each other well enough after having gone through the stress of two properties falling through and living with family. I proposed and wouldn't change a thing.
