How long were you together before you got engaged?

Disclosure - I do not want my DP to propose or to be engaged yet but I'm just wondering what the average relationship length is before you get engaged? My parents were engaged 4 months after meeting each other ( which I know is unusual) and I've been with DP for 4 years and no ring is on either of our horizons right now.
How long were you with your DP before you got engaged ?

4 years, then a 2 year engagement due to job issues/family crises.

I'm impressed by those who just knew and went for it so quickly!

OmaDesala · 08/03/2017 15:07

Together just under 2 years when got married, didnt have an engagement as such. I was 19. Been married for 28 years, together for nearly 30 years

NorfolkEnchance · 08/03/2017 15:09

9 months. Then 13 months until we got married, been married for 4 years.

Emboo19 · 08/03/2017 15:11

Well not me as I'm not engaged or wanting to be.
But my dad first proposed when my mum found out she was pregnant with me, they'd been seeing each other about 6 months, my mum said no. He asked again when I was around 6, she said no. He asked again on my 18th birthday and she says yes!! So they'd been together more than 19 years when they got engaged.
They married 7 months later.

My dad jokes she only said yes, when he was able to afford a decent ring!

About 4 months although we know each other for a while before getting together. Got married two years later and will have been married 30 years this year (yikes).

5 years, married one week after our 6 year anniversary

WHG1956 · 08/03/2017 15:40

Engaged after almost exactly 2 years. Married 18 months later. Now been married 38 years.

ShelaghTurner · 08/03/2017 15:47

Three months although DH said he had waited a while before asking as he thought I might think a proposal after a month was a bit weird. Married nearly 17 years.

Bonez · 08/03/2017 15:48

5 years for us!

Ecureuil · 08/03/2017 15:50

Just over 2 years. Been married 5 years now.
My previous partner I was with for 8 years and we never even discussed getting married.

RayofFuckingSunshine · 08/03/2017 15:52

2 years together, 1 year engaged then married. We had known each other a long time before actually becoming a couple.

harrietm87 · 08/03/2017 15:57

6 years. We were 22 when we got together. Bought our flat first. Engaged for 6 months and got married 6 months ago. Feel slow compared to you lot!

Scribblegirl · 08/03/2017 15:58

We got engaged just before our 4 year dating anniversary and will be married just before our 6 year dating anniversary.

A girl I used to work with met her now husband the same week I met DP, they were engaged within a month, married a year to the day they met, baby 9 months after the wedding - so 21 months from strangers to married with a kid. It's totally horses for courses but she used to treat me with so much pity before we got engaged, which used to make me laugh - just because she wanted to do it at that speed didn't mean I did!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/03/2017 15:59

3 months. Got engaged then found out I was pg a couple of days later.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/03/2017 16:01

Although was actually my 3rd engagement. First one - engaged after 3 weeks (I was 16 and stupid). Split up a month later because he was a criminal and I suspect he only wanted a wife who wouldn't testify in court.

Second engagement was after 6 months, he was abusive and violent after we got engaged. That lasted 2 years.

SandyY2K · 08/03/2017 16:04

Just under 18 months, but knew him about another 6 months on top of that.

I was thinking this actually, because I deliver a marriage preparation course and a I ask all the couples how long they've been together as part of the ice breaker.

A lot of them were together for 6 years and another lot for 3 years.

SandyY2K · 08/03/2017 16:05

Forgot to say, we've been married for 18 years now.

RasperryInAMelon · 08/03/2017 16:10

Got together in October 2013, engaged in October 2015, married in August 2016 expecting our first DC in May 2017

ChopsticksandChilliCrab · 08/03/2017 16:10

Engaged after 3 years. Married 2 years later. Still married 27 years on.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 08/03/2017 16:14

Move2yorkshire · 08/03/2017 16:17
