Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think people frequently miss their own weddings because of a morning quickie while in a plaster cast, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for title suggestions. I basically took @OverArmour's excellent suggestion and managed to shoehorn in snivelling simpleton, gloriously coined by @Eastie77Returns to refer to Lee in the first instance.

@WitcheryDivine suggested Recharging, Red Kites and The Man They Call Ron, is Ambridge becoming an earthly paradise or a hell on earth? which seems as good a place as any to kick off our discussions! Ron = Rob, a fortuitous typo on a previous thread. It does feel a bit as if we're marking time before he turns up again. Odd to do what could be a high profile storyline over the summer holidays when a lot of people will be away, but depending on your point of view, maybe that's a blessing!

Whither George? Is he shaping up to be Andrew Tate mark 2?

Everybody looking forward to Ferret Fun at the Fête? Me neither.

Over to you!

I've never had shiitake mushrooms, they're the long toe-like ones aren't they? Why wouldn't they be all right in a cooked breakfast?

JanglyBeads · 16/07/2023 12:37

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/07/2023 12:53

Shiitake are a different texture from the mushrooms we mostly have in the UK - white or chestnut. On the halcyon days when I have a full English/Scottish breakfast, I don't want posh or novel ingredients, I want what I'm used to.

Always brings back the happy memory of spotting Robbie Coltrane on the Arran ferry tucking into a huge breakfast. Something along these lines, I would think. I usually have something similar to fortify myself for the long journey home.

Shiitake are a much firmer texture, almost chewy, and a much stronger, meatier taste. They need a starring part, not to be one of the walk on characters. They’d clash with the sausage, bacon, black pudding rather than complement them.

JanglyBeads · 16/07/2023 20:12

Helen much more credible tonight

WombatCowgirl · 16/07/2023 20:53

Thank you for the mushroom enlightenment😀

Thanks for new thread.
With the disappearance first of Mustardland (that ages me) and then the official Archers FB page I've been a bit adrift.

What's this I've been going to for years?

Mustardland - Mustardland

In the olden days a lot of BBC programmes has their own little message boards , where listeners could comment about the programmes. The Archers was one, it had several distinct boards which were quite lively, and because it had a yellow background it was nicknamed Mustardland. Then the BBC closed the boards down, and some talented Mustardland board members set up their own version. Sometimes called Peet’s Place after one of its founders.

TheCatsMama · 16/07/2023 22:08

Are Stella and Pip going to get it on?

Eastie77Returns · 16/07/2023 22:23

I’ve used Shiitake in a mushroom risotto.

I cannot fathom how and why anyone would serve them up in a cooked breakfast. Very odd.

OverArmour · 16/07/2023 23:12

We’re only 160 posts in and so it’s sadly too early to incorporate ‘Tom’s talking shiitake again’ into a title 😂

WitcheryDivine · 16/07/2023 23:22

Haha @OverArmour

Obviously when Kirsty gets back from her Pragueshagathon Helen will have disintegrated and agreed to nurse Rob until death, or something.

I wish Kirsty had as good a friend as Kirsty is to other people.

Eastie77Returns · 17/07/2023 00:32

I hope the romantic break lives up to Kirsty’s expectations. I wonder if she’ll deliver a little surprise in 9 months time.

I've said before how much I admire Kirsty. She's been dealt such a crap hand and losing Wren was such a pointlessly cruel storyline.

However, she has a rich hinterland, loves nature and wants to serve her community. I'd love her to adopt a young child and for the SW not to make a mess of the SL.

JanglyBeads · 17/07/2023 07:41

Yes we need interim thread titles @OverArmour.
Very good

Yes in a way it’s a shame Roy already had kids as I can imagine those two having a platonic coparenting situation going on.

I think if she was more financially stable (eg owned her own home) she might adopt. Perhaps the scriptwriters can conjure up a long lost Uncle Cedric to leave her a deposit.

faffadoodledo · 17/07/2023 08:00

@TheCatsMama I think the older iteration of ML was one that folded when the BBC decided to stop moderating it (was it Keri who had that unenviable job?). That's what I was talking about. I wasn't aware of a newer version.

FallonsNewCoat · 17/07/2023 08:30

Yes, she is a very generous friend. However, her green credentials are a bit patchy. For someone who runs the rewilding project, she didn’t seem to have a hint of green guilt about flying off on a minibreak.

I thought eco-warriors have all but stopped unnecessary air travel nowadays. Her sole regret was that she was missing out on a good English summer but that’s not quite the same thing. I certainly don’t blame her - although I doubt whether I would want to spend more than an hour or so in Eric’s company. Horses for courses…

She does own her own home! She's renting it to Helen and Lee, and choosing to live as Roy's lodger.

Oh of course! That was such a weird time and I couldn’t remember what the conclusion was about the house.

There’s been no mention of Kirsty going on hols as long as I can remember so she is probably thinking of it as a very rare treat and planting a lot of trees to compensate!

CurlewKate · 17/07/2023 08:47

A propos shiitake mushrooms-they make a spectacular mushroom sauce for pasta. Garlic, white wine, splash of cream. Maybe a bit of truffle. End of PSA.

Poppins2016 · 17/07/2023 10:02

Now that she's back in his web and he's short on life, perhaps it's now a matter of who will kill whom.

Just read this comment on the previous thread... interesting food for thought. I could see Rob going for Helen and the boys "I cant have them so nobody can", but perhaps that's a tad too dramatic for the Archers?

Poppins2016 · 17/07/2023 10:03

... I also think we might well see Rob unleashed at his most monstrous. If he doesn't have to suffer consequences (prison, because he'll be dead), he might well choose to do whatever he likes...
