Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think people frequently miss their own weddings because of a morning quickie while in a plaster cast, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for title suggestions. I basically took @OverArmour's excellent suggestion and managed to shoehorn in snivelling simpleton, gloriously coined by @Eastie77Returns to refer to Lee in the first instance.

@WitcheryDivine suggested Recharging, Red Kites and The Man They Call Ron, is Ambridge becoming an earthly paradise or a hell on earth? which seems as good a place as any to kick off our discussions! Ron = Rob, a fortuitous typo on a previous thread. It does feel a bit as if we're marking time before he turns up again. Odd to do what could be a high profile storyline over the summer holidays when a lot of people will be away, but depending on your point of view, maybe that's a blessing!

Whither George? Is he shaping up to be Andrew Tate mark 2?

Everybody looking forward to Ferret Fun at the Fête? Me neither.

Over to you!

Thanks for the new thread and corking title!

The doctor said ‘one of his seizures’ didn’t she, so seems to have been going on a while. If he had one during the altercation with Lee, and another one with Helen they were close together - not a good sign I’m thinking.

I wonder what Emma would say if she heard what George said to Will about her and the love triangle stuff. He’s a nasty little misogynist isn’t he? I’d be interested to hear what Brad meant about his comments about Hannah.

FiveShelties · 14/07/2023 02:23

@FallonsNewCoat it is an awful job, I lost my Mum in May and cleared a little of her home, but a great deal left to do. I live in NZ and am definitely not looking forward to returning to finish the clearance and selling her home in the UK.

💐for you.

FiveShelties · 14/07/2023 02:24

Thank you for the new thread and a wonderful title.

Bubbylana · 14/07/2023 06:44

George and crunching his crisps uck. I dont like it when he and Brad are together I always think George is going to get Brad in trouble again.
Didnt know George had a little sister.
Just because Stella likes women it dosnt mean she would fancy Pip they could just be friends.
I also thought the consultant being so pushy with Helen was far fetched if she even was a doctor that was my first thought that it might be a ploy by Rob.

CurlewKate · 14/07/2023 07:15

It's being suggested on other forums that George's behaviour is due to either Emma's parenting or neurodivergency or both. Because a man can't just be a misogynist arsehole....

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/07/2023 07:32

Oh no. All those sheep sent me to sleep last night.

Off to re listen.

Voltefarce · 14/07/2023 07:43

Emma really makes my blood boil.

LittleOwl22 · 14/07/2023 08:16

What about Stella and Helen?

the doctor line was absolutely implausible- surely that amount of pressure on an ex?

Eastie77Returns · 14/07/2023 08:38

George has two younger sisters doesn’t be? Keira and Poppy. Keira is also his cousin…

I would expect this from a social worker or the hospital discharge team when they try to push family members to the brink of a burn out care for relatives. bastards

but not from a consultant.

Eastie77Returns · 14/07/2023 08:38

Was about to say the same! They’re both George’s half sisters.

@Bubbylana Keira is significant because she’s the only child Ed and Emma share as biological parents. Ed is George’s stepfather. Poppy is the only biologically shared child of poor deceased Nic and Will. Will is obvs George’s bio father.

I do have to BOOP the SWs for attempting to create a character who is apparently completely fucked up by virtue of their complicated background. I mean, we always knew Ruairi would struggle with his origins, but until that conversation George had with … was it Ed, or Will?, recently, I hadn’t appreciated that they intend to base his adult character on his trauma-ridden beginnings.

Also, given that George and Mia are family, even though not blood relations, and grew up together, it’s disconcerting to hear how hostile and unpleasant he is to and about her. There’s a lot to unpack in that fractured family relationship - but it’s such a contrast to the loving relationship between Brad and Chelsea.

I completely agree, the hospital discharge team were the worst people I have ever had to deal with. The phone call was typical of their behaviour.

BettyCake · 14/07/2023 09:34

Well done Helen for standing up to the consultant. Although I cannot imagine a consultant being so pushy, even when Helen repeatedly said that she was divorced, not local and could not help. It was completely implausible!

George has taken over from Kate for my most awful character. In fact, I don't actually mind Kate these days (not that we hear that much from her.)

Twyford · 14/07/2023 09:58

bonus for: why was Pip so horribly rude to Brian about fruit farming yesterday? No one asked you you little PITA.

Pip has spent several years being treated by her parents as an all-knowing wonder-child and the infallible guru of British farming. She's just being kind in bestowing the benefits of her great wisdom on her cousins.

Brefugee · 14/07/2023 10:21

but she's not really wrong about the soft fruit? And she's Stella's friend and may have been having a sly dig at Adam after he threw (unsucessfully) Stella under the bus?

George is a little git. Horrible. But. I did like his talk with Brad and how Brad seemed a) so sensible and b) aware of how George manipulated and tried to manipulate him again. Hopefully the party won't get off the ground (unless George steals Brad's keys...)

Martin Gibson's sausage roll wrapper? not sure. Nice idea but why would he be in the break room?

Also agree with @BeatriceBatchelor that Susan is a wet, limp lettuce. Her voice drives me mad. But she is always all starry eyed about George and her family members. Usually not against Neil, but there we have it.

TheSilveryPussycat · 14/07/2023 10:21

Did anyone notice Brian decrying outdoor lido swimming?

Strange, as he and Jenny installed an outdoor pool at Home Farm.

Scarydinosaurs · 14/07/2023 10:21

George is clearly damaged from the teasing he’s endured from his parents’ bizarre relationships. Losing Nic must have also been incredibly difficult - and despite his insistence he didn’t care for her - I imagine his way of coping is to reject people.

He is so awful and selfish that it’s painful to listen to him.

I agree with PP that listening to him and Brad speak you spend the whole time worrying he’s about to get him into trouble. I wasn’t sure if an epiphany was brewing last night…and then we seemed to turn back to ‘Hannah is to blame’.

I now am completely convinced it was his sausage roll.

FallonsNewCoat · 14/07/2023 10:39

Helen should have just told the consultant that the marriage had ended with an attempted murder charge. That would have put an end to the conversation. There’s a lot to be said for shock tactics some days.

Brefugee · 14/07/2023 10:40

surely Helen should have said something like "nope, there is a non mol against him. Find someone else."? And then rang the hospital and told them to take her name off his file as the contact

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2023 10:41

FiveShelties · 14/07/2023 09:29

I suppose those who haven’t had to deal with a vulnerable relative being ejected from hospital won’t even have heard of a discharge team. SWs probably were trying to simplify

Scarydinosaurs · 14/07/2023 11:25

I thought the consultant sounded completely implausible and wondered if it was a set up.

I agree - Helen should have said ‘I have a non-mol’ though appreciate it would be tricky to explain why she had been at the hospital with him so recently.

stilldumdedumming · 14/07/2023 11:40

@Scarydinosaurs but where's your evidence?!!

Scarydinosaurs · 14/07/2023 11:45

His demand for evidence is my evidence 😆

@stilldumdedumming I wasn’t 100% until that Brad conversation but now I’m convinced.

I’d love to hear a conversation between Emma, Ed and Will about it all.

Do we anticipate George trying to ‘get revenge’ on Hannah? And what might that look like?
